Standing Rules for the Use <strong>of</strong> Force for US Forces<br />

(2) Lethal force is authorized when lethal force reasonably appears to be necessary to prevent<br />

the escape <strong>of</strong> a prisoner, provided there is probable cause to believe that such person(s) have committed<br />

or attempted to commit a serious <strong>of</strong>fense, that is, one that involves imminent threat <strong>of</strong> death or serious<br />

bodily harm, and would pose an imminent threat <strong>of</strong> death or serious bodily harm to DOD forces or<br />

others in the vicinity.<br />

(3) Lethal force is authorized when lethal force reasonably appears necessary to arrest<br />

or apprehend a person who, there is probable cause to believe, has committed a serious <strong>of</strong>fense<br />

(as defined in the preceding subparagraph).<br />

c. When operating under these RUF, warning shots are not authorized within US territory<br />

(including US territorial waters), except when in the appropriate exercise <strong>of</strong> force protection <strong>of</strong><br />

US Navy and Naval Service vessels during maritime operations as permitted by CJCSI 3121.01B,<br />

Standing Rules <strong>of</strong> Engagement/Standing Rules for the Use <strong>of</strong> Force for US Forces.<br />

d. Units with assigned weapons may deploy with weapons stored; however, weapons will<br />

not be carried during CS operations unless authorized by the SecDef.<br />
