wing velocity did not exceed 2-
3 metres per second. The public
filled the small and cosy
municipal stadium, the “Gaeta
Huguet”, to enthusiastically
support the athletes. Naturally,
they favoured the men’s
team from their own city and
the women’s team from the
neighbouring city of Valencia.
The main battles of the competition
were the fight for the
men’s club title between the
Russian club “Luch” and the
Portuguese club “Sporting”
and the race for the women’s
title between the Russian club
“Luch” and the Spanish club
“Valencia Terra i Mar”. As always,
the first athletes to do
battle were the men’s hammer
throwers. A group of strong
athletes gathered in the ham-
mer circle and in four throws
they showed some creditable
results for the beginning of the
season. The Italian, Nicola Vizzoni,
won with 78.67 metres,
second was the Slovak Libor
Charfreitag with 77.56 metres
and the Russian Aleksey Zagornyi
came 3rd with 75.73
metres leaving behind the
Portuguese thrower who could
only manage seventh. Immediately
after that the “Luch”
representative, Aleksandr
Derevyagin in the 400 metre
hurdles increased “Luch’s”
breakaway margin when he
beat Edivaldo Monteiro from
“Sporting” into second place.
During the race, Aleksandr
stepped on the lane border
line but he can be forgiven
as he was drawn in the inside
european event
