Champion. I also like to run in
Monte Carlo where the track is
perfect. Brussels is made for
the 800 metres whereas, in
the World Championships in
Berlin, I think, one has to be
ready to run 1.42 because the
track is fast and there will be a
lot of good competitors. There
are a lot of youngsters putting
performances close to these
times now-a-days and all of
them are very fast but I think
there is enough time to prepare
for the Championships.
The main thing is to be sure
that my health doesn’t let me
down as happened before my
recent trip to the USA when
I got the flu and didn’t run
well. Because of the illness, I
haven’t trained for a long time.
At the preparatory training in
Cheboksary, I hope to be able
to run into form in time for the
World Championships.
Pole Vaulters performed well
at the “Moscow Open” for the
beginning of July. The winner
was the Ukrainian Maksym
Mazuryk who cleared 5.70
metres. The vaulters who took
the next four places all jumped
5.60 metres. Viktor Chistyakov,
who would later win the
national championships, was,
on this occasion, sixth with
5.50 metres.
The high jump dual between
Yaroslav Rybakov and season
leader Ivan Ukhov was most
compelling. Both jumped
2.34 metres and then attempted
2.36 metres. Later,
it was to be the same at the
Russian National Championships,
when they would both
clear 2.35 metres. In Moscow,
Yaroslav lost on the number
of jumps used for taking 2.34
metres whereas Ukhov jumped
this height at his first attempt.
Pole Sylwester Bednarek was
obviously not ready to compete
against these giants of
the sport and took the third
place with 2.25 metres.
In the women’s programme,
virtually every event was contested
with the leaders not prepared
to lose their psychologi-
