But the situation for “Luch” became more favourable as the day unwound. The victory of Konstantin Shabanov in the 100 metres hurdles was a pleasant and unexpected surprise for the Muscovites. The Portuguese responded with their heavy guns. Francis Obikwelu won the 200 metres with Roman Smirnov in second. “Luch” replied with a second place to Aleksandr Ivanov in the Javelin. Although this was the first time Aleksandr had performed after serious injury, he finished 2 places ahead of the Portuguese thrower putting the Russians again in front. Meanwhile at the same time, triple jumper, Yevgeniy Plotnir won his competition and “Luch” increased their lead over Sporting. Before the two last events “Luch” were 5 points ahead, but the Portuguese did not surrender. Rui Silva defended his country’s honour winning the 3,000 metres while Vyacheslav Shabunin representing “Luch” for the twelfth time in this cup faced a difficult job as all the other runners were considerably younger, with the youngest Tanzanian Marco Joseph being twenty years his junior. The race started tactically and all was to be resolved in the last 600 metres. As a result Rui Silva won, Kenyan Bernard Kiptum from the Slovenian club was second and Vyacheslav Shabunin came third and putting “Luch” 3 points ahead before the last event, the 4x400 metres relay. Again it was down to the relay to decide everything. The Russian runners were Ivan Kozhukhar, two masters of the 400 metres hurdles, Vladimir Antmanis and Aleksandr Derevyagin, and, on the final lap, Maksim Babarykin. The Portuguese were full of confidence and, after the first leg, Konstantin Shabanov were in the lead, with Russian Ivan Kozhukhar being the fifth to cross the line. In a swift relay, it is difficult to evaluate the situation and count places and points but it was clear that the efforts of the Russians Vladimir Antmanis and Aleksandr Derevyagin were paying off and the Russians were gaining on the leaders. At the finishing line the British won, the Portuguese were second with the Slovaks third with the Russians fourth. With this result “Luch” remained 1 point ahead of “Sporting” and won the title. For the women, the second day was a lot quieter. All the sportswomen from “Luch” came in the top three except for young Marina Andryukhina who came fourth in the 100 metre hurdles and, in the 1500 metres, the experienced Olesya Mikheyeva (Chumakova) also came fourth. The excellent jump of the Portuguese Naide Gomes in the long jump (6.82 metres) did not put off the Russian jumper, Yelena So- european event kolova, who confidently took second place with a season’s best jump (6.65 metres). Despite the Spaniard Ruth Beitia winning the high jump with Russian, Svetlana Shkolina coming second, the Spanish women failed to get close to the Russian team and so the Russians finished the second day in the lead.
