This result was the best of the
competition and brought Ivan

much needed eight points to
“Luch”. But after “Luch” won
the high jump luck began to
let them down. Ivan Yushkov,
far from his best, could only
manage fifth in the shot put. In
the 1500 metres, despite performing
well in a very strong
field and beating a former
European champion Cosimo
Caliandro, Vyacheslav Sokolov
finished second to the incomparable
2009 Indoor European
Champion, Rui Silva from
“Sporting”. The 400 metres
did not change the situation.
The winner was the Sudanese,
Rabah Yusif from the English
Club, whilst Russian Maksim
Babarykin came third and
the Portuguese João Ferreira
was fifth. At this point, “Luch”
waited for the chance to improve
the team competition
and bring about a change in
the fortunes of the match but
Pavel Naumov’s had his spikes
‘clipped’ in the 5,000 metres,
and, whilst he was put them
back on, the group of athletes
