Endomyocardial biopsy and histological
examination of immunochemically stained
myocardium may clarify the diagnosis,
although patchy involvement may yield low
sensitivity.
Sudden cardiac death may occur in the
presence of either active or healed
myocarditis. Thus, a convalescent period of
at least 6 months is recommended before a
return to sports. After this period, if clinical
features, ECG - Echocardiogram (at rest and
during exercise) and Holter monitoring are all
normal, the athlete may return to
competition.
