Mitral valve prolapse
Idiopathic MVP is the most common valvular
disorder, occurring in approximately 5% of the
population.
Although sudden death from MVP has been
reported, it is extremely rare and most athletes
with MVP are totally asymptomatic.
Physical examination of patients with MVP may
reveal a midsystolic click and a late systolic
murmur.
If an athlete with known MVP develops syncope,
exertional chest pain, or moderate-to-severe
mitral regurgitation, or has a family history of
MVP and sudden death, exclusion from athletic
participation is recommended.
