Dear Readers …
Since the middle of 2009 things have been
moving upwards again in precision tools.
With a production plus of 14 percent to
eight and a half billion euros, the precision
tool industry has already been able to recover
from the crisis during the course of last
year. This trend has also continued during
the first six months of this year. With around
35 percent, the manufacturers of cutting
tools, in particular, achieved a considerable
upturn, which has persisted during the
first half of 2011. The German mechanical
and plant engineering sector, too, has been
able to record a rise in orders of 23 percent
during the first half of 2011 according to the
VDMA. The figures for machine tools recently
provided by the German Machine Tool
Builders‘ Association VDW are even higher:
orders received have more than doubled
during the first six months over the same
period last year.
However, instead of being able to enjoy the
upturn, we find ourselves again in the midst
of a cost spiral as regards the raw materials.
Whether it‘s electricity or steels, there‘s
only one direction the costs are moving in
– upwards, with a steeper and steeper gradient.
The interplay between strongly rising
demand and artificial scarcity is resulting in
disproportionately high price increases. Especially
in the case of tools, the key issue is
no longer technology, but maximum customer
benefit in the form of minimum costs
per part. This can only be achieved by taking
into account all production aspects.
This includes advice about the choice of the
„right“ tool just as much as services in the
logistics field or the development of individually
customized complete machining solutions.
Increasing efficiency is now the
industry‘s motto.
An essential basis for that is provided by
new materials that serve as the foundation
for electromobility, for instance, and that
combine high strength and stability with
low weight. Similar demands are also made
by the aerospace industry. The materials
are frequently built up from various diffe-
