"February Anno Dom. 1639.<br />

Several parcels <strong>of</strong> land in Hartford upon <strong>the</strong> River <strong>of</strong> Con-<br />

necticut belonging to Jolin <strong>Clark</strong> & to his heirs forever.<br />

One parcel on which his dwelling house now standeth with<br />

yards or gardens <strong>the</strong>rein being, that where<strong>of</strong> lyeth in <strong>the</strong><br />

West Field, containing by estimation four acres more or less,<br />

abutting upon <strong>the</strong> highway leading<br />

from Seth Grant's to <strong>the</strong><br />

Sentinel Hill on <strong>the</strong> east, and Mr. Allen's land on <strong>the</strong> west,<br />

and on "William Ruscoe's land and on WilUam Parker's land<br />

on <strong>the</strong> south and on Thomas Burcharde's land on <strong>the</strong> north."<br />

A description <strong>of</strong> eleven o<strong>the</strong>r pieces follows. The house<br />

and lot above described were sold by <strong>John</strong> <strong>Clark</strong> to Zacha-<br />

riah Field, as appears in <strong>the</strong> description <strong>of</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lat-<br />

ter <strong>record</strong>ed January 1650. The house stood on what was<br />

known as <strong>the</strong> 38th lot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 8th tier on <strong>the</strong> west side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

highway now known as Trumbull Street and very near <strong>the</strong><br />

east line <strong>of</strong> Allyn Street. Its position is laid down on <strong>the</strong><br />

map in I. W. Stuart's " Hartford in <strong>the</strong> Olden Time," and a<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r description may be found in Porter's " Historical No-<br />

tices <strong>of</strong> Hartford," p.<br />

appear on <strong>the</strong> town <strong>record</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Hartford,<br />

23. O<strong>the</strong>r references to <strong>John</strong> <strong>Clark</strong><br />

as follows :<br />

September 1639—" It is ordered that Goodman Scott, Goodman<br />

<strong>Clark</strong> and Goodman Ely shall reserve <strong>the</strong> common "...<br />

" and if Thomas Scott, <strong>John</strong> <strong>Clark</strong> and Goodman Ely fail <strong>of</strong><br />

measuring within <strong>the</strong> time set, <strong>the</strong>y shall forfeit five shil-<br />

lings."<br />

General Meeting, Feb. 18, 1640—<strong>John</strong> <strong>Clark</strong> with eleven<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs on a committee to divide " <strong>the</strong> land on <strong>the</strong> east side <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Great River."<br />

January 12, 1642—" There was chosen<br />

year, <strong>John</strong> <strong>Clark</strong> and <strong>John</strong> Wilcox."<br />
