<strong>John</strong>' {Abel,' <strong>John</strong>,^ Mat<strong>the</strong>iv," <strong>John</strong>'}, b. March 20, 1787 ;<br />

m. Aug. 26, 1812, Prudence Woodruff, born Aug. 3, 1793,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Joshua and Prudence (Curtiss) Woodruff. He<br />

lived in <strong>the</strong> old house <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r and grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, in Stan-<br />

ley Quarter, New Britain, was a farmer and butcher, and es-<br />

tablished <strong>the</strong> first meat-market in New Britain. It stood at<br />

or near <strong>the</strong> intersection <strong>of</strong> Main street with <strong>the</strong> New York &<br />

New England railroad, to <strong>the</strong> north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> railroad and to<br />

<strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> Main street. He served in <strong>the</strong> war <strong>of</strong> 1812 as<br />

Corporal <strong>of</strong> Capt. Dan. Deming's company in Col. Brainard's<br />

regiment, from Aug. 18 to Oct. 25, 1814, and was stationed<br />

at New London, as appears by<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>record</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pension<br />

Office at Washington. He died Jan. 27, 1835, and was<br />

buried in <strong>the</strong> old cemetery <strong>of</strong> New Britain. Their children<br />

were :<br />

i. Jane, b. Nov. 14, 1818 ; d. Feb. 17, 1818.<br />

43. ii. Matilda, b. Oct. 24, 1815.<br />

iii. George, b. June 20, 1817 ; m. Jan. 16, 1845, Sarah<br />

E. Castlen <strong>of</strong> Culloden, Georgia, born in Hanover<br />

Co., Virginia, Feb. 25, 1825, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong> and<br />

Eliza (Grantland) Castlen. He died July 15, 1845,<br />

at Macon, Georgia. He left no children, and his<br />

widow married Thomas Cauthron <strong>of</strong> Griffin, Georgia.<br />

44. iv. Abel Newell, b. June 12, 1819.<br />

45. v. <strong>John</strong> Woodruff, b. July 3, 1822.<br />

vi. Jane Louisa, b. Oct. 2, 1827 ; m. March 2, 1845,<br />

Deming W. Sexton, born Dec. 12, 1819, son <strong>of</strong> Walter<br />

and Nancy (Barton) Sexton. They had a child born<br />

March 24, 1846, and died tlie next day. She died May<br />

25, 1846.<br />

vii. Mary Prudence, b. Nov. 7, 1830; d. May 17, 1834.<br />
