Mary Caroline Hubbs, born April 1, 1819, in Portland, Maine,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Alexander and Mary (Lowell) Hubbs.<br />
The following statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal facts <strong>of</strong> his life<br />
was contributed by a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family :<br />
" Mr. <strong>Clark</strong> was born in <strong>Farmington</strong>, May 27, 1819.<br />
Leaving that town with his fa<strong>the</strong>r's family, when about eleven<br />
years old, he spent twenty-two years in <strong>the</strong> West, finally locat-<br />
ing in Portland, Maine, where he is now living. Going West<br />
in 1831, he had no opportunity for more than a common<br />
school education. His business education commenced as a<br />
clerk in <strong>the</strong> book-store <strong>of</strong> Mr. Jeremy L. Cross, in New<br />
Haven, Ct. After removing West he was clerk for merchants<br />
in Naples and Jacksonville, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri.<br />
Leaving St. Louis in 1845, he made his first venture in busi-<br />
ness at Rockingham, Iowa, but afterwards went to Platteville,<br />
Wisconsin, where he engaged in mining and mercantile pursuits<br />
until 1852. While living in Platteville he united, March<br />
10, 1844, with <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian church, and August 22,1850,<br />
was married in Portland, Maine, to Miss Hubbs, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Capt. Alexander Hubbs. In 1852 a partnership was formed<br />
with his bro<strong>the</strong>r, Dr. J. W. <strong>Clark</strong>, and bro<strong>the</strong>r-in-law, Mr.<br />
Elias Gill, under <strong>the</strong> firm name <strong>of</strong> Gill, <strong>Clark</strong> & Co., for trad-<br />
ing in California. Here his next two years were spent in<br />
San Francisco and Sacramento. Returning in 1854, he located<br />
in Portland, and has for twenty-eight years been engaged in<br />
<strong>the</strong> ice business in that city, for nineteen years carrying on
