What strikes you about each man and his meeting with Jesus? 82 83 Jesus’ Final Week in Jerusalem Jesus’ Final Week in Jerusalem After a long journey, Jesus is finally ready to enter Jerusalem. He knows that he must face his enemies in order to fulfill God’s plan. Before he is arrested and put on trial, he has a few days to teach in the temple and to prepare his disciples for what will happen after he dies. JESUS TEACHES IN JERUSALEM Jesus Enters Jerusalem 28 When Jesus had finished saying all this, he went on toward Jerusalem. 29 As he was getting near Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples on ahead. 30 He told them, “Go into the next village, where you will find a young donkey that has never been ridden. Untie the donkey and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks why you are doing that, just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” 32 They went off and found everything just as Jesus had said. 33 While they were untying the donkey, its owners asked, “Why are you doing that?” 34 They answered, “The Lord needs it.” 35 Then they led the donkey to Jesus. They put some of their clothes on its back and helped Jesus get on. 36 And as he rode along, the people spread clothes on the road in front of him. 37 When Jesus was starting down the Mount of Olives, his large crowd of disciples were happy and praised God because of all the miracles they had seen. 38 They shouted, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory to God.” 39 Some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, make your disciples stop shouting!” 40 But Jesus answered, “If they keep quiet, these stones will start shouting.”
Luke 19, 20 42 and said: 41 When Jesus came closer and could see Jerusalem, he cried It is too bad that today your people don’t know what will bring them peace! Now it is hidden from them. 43 Jerusalem, the time will come when your enemies will build walls around you to attack you. Armies will surround you and close in on you from every side. 44 They will level you to the ground and kill your people. Not one stone in your buildings will be left on top of another. This will happen because you did not see that God had come to save you. Jesus in the Temple 45 When Jesus entered the temple, he started chasing out the people who were selling things. 46 He told them, “The Scriptures MONEYCHANGING IN THE TEMPLE People came to Jerusalem at the time of the yearly celebration of Passover and for other religious holidays. Part of the celebration and worship involved sacrificing animals and making offerings of grain to God. Different sacrifices required different types of animals (for example, see Lev 3.1-13; 14.10,21; Num 28.16-25), so many sellers set up animal pens and cages in the outer court of the temple, which was called the court of the Gentiles. This court was the only part of the temple that Gentiles (non-Jewish people) were allowed to enter, so moneychangers often set up money tables where out-of-town Jewish visitors could change their money into the special kind of money used at the temple. The people used this money to pay the annual temple tax. Sometimes, the sellers overcharged people, and the moneychangers did not give a fair amount of money back to people in return for the foreign money they had exchanged. Jesus accused these sellers and moneychangers of being robbers. He was also making the same point that the prophet Amos had made eight centuries earlier: Offering sacrifices was not as important as worshiping God and being fair to people (Amos 5.21-24). The chief priests and other temple officials, as well as their families, made money from the activity of selling and buying at the temple, so they didn’t like it when Jesus attacked this system. 84 85 Jesus’ Final Week in Jerusalem say, ‘My house should be a place of worship.’ But you have made it a place where robbers hide!” 47 Each day, Jesus kept on teaching in the temple. So the chief priests, the teachers of the Law of Moses, and some other important people tried to have him killed. 48 But they could not find a way to do it, because everyone else was eager to listen to him. A Question about Jesus’ Authority 20 One day, Jesus was teaching in the temple and telling the good news. So the chief priests, the teachers, and the nation’s leaders 2 asked him, “What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?” 3 Jesus replied, “I want to ask you a question. 4 Who gave John the right to baptize? Was it God in heaven or merely some human being?” 5 They talked this over and said to each other, “We can’t say that God gave John this right. Jesus will ask us why we didn’t believe John. 6 And we can’t say that it was merely some human who gave John the right to baptize. The crowd will stone us to death, because they think John was a prophet.” 7 So they told Jesus, “We don’t know who gave John the right to baptize.” 8 Jesus replied, “Then I won’t tell you who gave me the right to do what I do.” Renters of a Vineyard 9 Jesus told the people this story: A man once planted a vineyard and rented it out. Then he left the country for a long time. 10 When it was time to harvest the crop, he sent a servant to ask the renters for his share of the grapes. But they beat up the servant and sent him away without anything. 11 So the owner sent another servant. The renters also beat him up. They insulted him terribly and sent him away without a thing. 12 The owner sent a third servant. He was also beaten terribly and thrown out of the vineyard. 13 The owner then said to himself, “What am I going to do? I know what. I’ll send my son, the one I love so much. They will surely respect him!”
