Resources for the Reader Thomas—One of Jesus’ twelve closest disciples (called “apostles”). He was also known as “the Twin.” See “apostle.” threshing—The process of separating grain from husks. Grain was spread out at a “threshing place,” a flat area of stone or packed earth. People or animals walked on the grain or dragged heavy boards across it to remove the husks. Then the grain and husks were tossed into the air with a special shovel called a “threshing fork.” The wind would blow the light husks away, but the heavy grain would fall back to the surface of the threshing place. tribe—A large group of people descended from a common ancestor. See also “clan” and “twelve tribes of Israel.” twelve tribes of Israel—The Bible speaks of all the Israelites in a tribe as having descended from one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh were a little different, because the people in those tribes descended from the two sons of Joseph, who was one of Jacob’s sons. That would make a total of thirteen tribes, but the Bible always counts only twelve. In some passages Ephraim and Manasseh are counted as one tribe, and in other passages the Levi tribe is left out, probably because they were designated for priestly service to all the tribes, and as such, were scattered throughout the land belonging to the other tribes. People from other nations were sometimes allowed to become Israelites (see Exodus 12.38; Deuteronomy 23.7,8; Ruth 1–4), and these people would then belong to one of the twelve Israelite tribes. Tyre—See “Phoenicia.” unclean—See “Clean and Unclean.” wine-pit—A hollow place cut into the rock where the juice was squeezed from grapes and collected to make wine. wisdom—Often refers to the common sense and practical skill needed to solve everyday problems, but in some places in the Bible it also refers to the ability to find answers to the hard questions about the meaning of life. See 1 Kings 3.1-15; 10.1-10; Proverbs 3.13-18; 8.1-36; 1 Corinthians 1.18— 2.16. 142 Year of Celebration—According to the Law of Moses, land that had been sold was to be returned to its original owner and all slaves were to be freed and returned to their families during this special year celebrated once every fifty years. Also known as the “Jubilee Year.” See Leviticus 25.8-34. Jesus makes reference to this time of freedom as “the year the Lord has chosen” (see Luke 4.19). yoke—A strong, heavy, wooden collar that fit around the neck of an ox, so that the ox could pull a plow or a cart. Zion—Another name for Jerusalem. Zion sometimes refers specifically to the hill in Jerusalem where the temple was built (see 2 Samuel 5.6-10; Psalm 78.68,69). 143 Word List
