used with the float or bubble gage. Digital recorders are gradually<br />

replacing strip-chart (graphic) recorders at gaging stations in the<br />

United States. The two recorders are about equal in accuracy, reliability,<br />

and cost, but the digital recorder is compatible with the use of<br />

electronic computers in computing discharge records. This automated<br />

system offers greater economy and flexibility in the computationpublication<br />

process than do manual methods associated with graphic<br />

recording. However, the use ofgraphic recorders should be continued<br />

at those sites where a graphic record is necessary to detect ice effects,<br />

backwater, or frequent malfunctions of the recording system.<br />

The digital recorder used by the U.S. Geological Survey (Isherwood,<br />

1963) is a battery-operated slow-speed paper-tape punch which re-<br />
