Application for New License Middle Fork American River Project (FERC Project No. 2079) Table NF-1. North Fork Long Canyon Diversion Dam Modification – Construction, Operation, and Maintenance. Activity Description Modifications to Existing Project Facilities FERC Project Boundary Revision Construction Access Roads Construction Work and Staging Areas Modifications to Existing Facilities Modify the existing North Fork Long Canyon Diversion Dam and intake structure into a self-cleaning, stream-bottom intake. Construct a wedge-wire screen and collection channel immediately upstream of the existing diversion dam ogee spillway. Raise the existing dam abutments by 3.5 feet. Construct a concrete collection chamber on the upstream side of the east dam abutment connecting to the existing discharge pipeline. Construct a temporary access road on the west bank of the existing North Fork Long Canyon Diversion Pool. Refer to Figures NF-1 through NF-4. None. All facilities will be constructed within the existing FERC Project boundary. Construction equipment and materials will arrive at the site via Eleven Pines Road (FR 2) and North Fork Long Canyon Diversion North Road and North Fork Long Canyon Diversion South Road. A temporary access road will be constructed on the west bank of the existing North Fork Long Canyon Diversion Pool. The construction work area will include the existing dam, tunnel intake, and surrounding unvegetated areas. Construction staging will occur on the north side of Long Canyon Creek adjacent to the dam. Disposal Areas Any excess excavated material will be disposed of at an agency-approved disposal area. Construction Activities and Associated Equipment Construct a new temporary access road on the west bank of the North Fork Long Canyon Diversion Pool. Construct small cofferdam upstream of the construction site and temporarily divert flows from North Fork Long Canyon Creek into a culvert connected to the existing 36-inch diameter low-level outlet. Excavate the streambed upstream of the North Fork Long Canyon Diversion Dam for installation of the new screen, collection channel, and collection chamber. Excavated material and rock will be spread over the staging area and compacted. Prepare existing diversion dam for new construction including concrete drilling, concrete cutting, and installing steel dowels. Install reinforcing steel and forms for construction of new screen, collection system, and parapets on dam abutments. Raise the abutments of the diversion by 2.7 feet. Construct a 90-feet-long, 3.7-feet-wide concrete collection channel on the upstream side of the existing concrete diversion dam ogee spillway. February 2011 C-18
