04 iPhone DIY<br />
application, Castorama<br />

In February 2010<br />
Castorama France<br />
launched a free iPhone<br />
application to help users<br />
carry out successful<br />
DIY projects at home.<br />
Features include a<br />
surface area calculator<br />
to determine how much<br />
paint, wallpaper, fl ooring<br />
or tiles is required for<br />
particular jobs, a memo<br />
area which stores facts<br />
<strong>and</strong> fi gures, <strong>and</strong> a simple<br />
<strong>and</strong> practical spirit level.<br />
05 DIY classes, B&Q UK<br />
In 2009 B&Q UK trialled<br />
two DIY classes for the<br />
general public. Facilitated<br />
by trained individuals,<br />
the classes were free<br />
<strong>and</strong> included instruction<br />
on laying fl ooring, fi xing<br />
leaking taps, putting up<br />
shelves <strong>and</strong> decorating<br />
behind radiators.<br />
06 Eco shops, B&Q UK<br />
In March, B&Q launched<br />
its fi rst eco shops at its<br />
stores in New Malden<br />
<strong>and</strong> Sutton in Surrey.<br />
The eco shops enable<br />
homeowners to get<br />
everything they need all in<br />
one place to live a more<br />
sustainable home life <strong>and</strong><br />
save money whilst doing<br />
it. There will be products<br />
<strong>and</strong> advice on energy <strong>and</strong><br />
water, as well as services<br />
including boiler, solid wall<br />
<strong>and</strong> solar thermal water<br />
heating installations.<br />

From May, B&Q will be<br />
offering ‘home eco audits’<br />
to help homeowners<br />
underst<strong>and</strong> the measures<br />
they can implement to cut<br />
their home’s environmental<br />
impact <strong>and</strong> running costs.<br />
B&Q is also introducing<br />
Eco Advisers with<br />
special NVQ qualifi cations.<br />
Starting fi rst at the Sutton<br />
<strong>and</strong> New Malden stores<br />
this role will then be rolled<br />
out across the country.<br />

07 Installations,<br />
B&Q China<br />
At B&Q China a new<br />
single room make-over<br />
<strong>and</strong> single product<br />
installation service was<br />
launched. This enables<br />
customers to have single<br />
items installed, such as<br />
a bath, toilet or lighting,<br />
or a single room decorated,<br />
in addition to the <strong>full</strong><br />
apartment fi t-out service<br />
which the business has<br />
provided for many years.<br />

Self-service check-outs<br />
were rolled out across<br />
B&Q UK, enabling<br />
customers to speed<br />
up their shopping trip.<br />
They now typically<br />
account for around<br />
40% of transactions.
