Roark recalls Bowling
For Dollars on TV
By Jim Woodruff
J.B. Roark has fond memories of the old TV bowling shows in
Dallas.
They included Bowling for Dollars and Bonus Bowling.
“They were very popular,” said Roark.
Bowling for Dollars was hosted by Verne Lundquist, then the
Channel 8 sports guy but now with CBS.
It was in the 1970s and Bonus Bowling was in the 1960s.
J.B. did not send in an entry, but his wife did without him
Th e Bowling News
By JIM WOODRUFF
I will be leaving the Bowling
News staff in a couple of more
weeks. No, I have not been
fired.
It is not an easy step to take.
It is just that my son Ken
has given me an offer I can’t
turn down. I will be moving to
Costa Rica to live with him.
I hope I’m making the right
choice. I know nothing about
the country other than it is located
just this side of Panama,
and the people who have been
there love it.
Ken has been trying to
get me to make the move for
several years. He has a plastic
business there.
I’ve decided that if he wants
me to come down so much that
I should give it a try.
Quite a few of my friends
say I am crazy and should not
go. On the other hand, many
tell me it’s beautiful and great
and I will love it.
They say I would be an idiot
not to go.
Living promises to be easy
with a full-time maid.
I will have to admit that I
am scared to death,
I cherish having so many
great friends here and I will
miss them a bunch I know.
Ken guarantees me a great
time, and I am looking forward
to spending more time with
him.
I really have never enjoyed
many days without some sort
of newspaper pressure.
I was with the old Dallas
Times Herald 35 years before
retiring. A year after retiring, I
started working for the Bowling
News and enjoyed it very much.
The Hazletts – Carol and
Bill – and the Franklins
– Genie and Tony – have been
nice to work with.
They love the game and
have done a terrific job with
the Bowling News. It would
be awfully hard to beat as the
country’s best.
I hope to do some writing
for them from down there,
Hope to see you later.
Here is wishing all good
luck and good health.
Ryan Gauthier
This week’s high man is
Ryan Gauthier with a 298-
268-234 for an 800 series at
BRC Thousand Oaks in San
Antonio. Ryan is going back to
school full time at Northwest
Vista College in San Antonio.
He bowls in one league full
time, but subs at different
centers during the week.
What is your high series? An
846 on Nov. 26, 2008. I have
bowled three 800s.
How many 300’s have you
bowled? Two.
Thoughts on your big night?
I needed to lengthen my span
and change my pitches, so I
was actually in the pro shop
that day to get everything
changed. I shot the 800 with
the old pitches, but have now
switched to the new pitches.
Now the question is, why
would I change if I just 800?
What ball did you throw? A
Storm Virtual Gravity.
Who drills your balls? Joe
Brock at BRC Thousand Oaks.
What is your all-time
favorite bowling ball? The Storm
T-Road Pearl.
What is your average in the
Thursday Early Mixed league?
243 after nine games.
What is your all-time high
average? 226.
How long have you been
bowling? I have been bowling
for 17 years. Started when I
was seven. My family bowled
and I went to the bowl with my
dad and kept score for him and
his team. Watched the better
bowlers and picked it up from
there.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? Walter Ray Williams
Jr., his versatility and consistency.
He is the perfect guy
to model your game after if
you want to be a good bowler.
Every style is different, but he
is one you want to watch.
Most memorable bowling moment?
The day that I shot 846.
I started out with 299-300 and
was bowling my dad. He was
choked up and emotional and I
remember turning around after
my last shot and giving him a
hug and he told me how proud
he was. It was the high series
in the area at the time, but
was broken two weeks later.
I bowled it at Country Lanes
in Ishteming, MI. It is in the
upper peninsula of Michigan, a
16 lane center.
Ryan’s tip of the week: Find
a routine that is successful for
you. The last thing I tell myself
before I throw a shot is to
exhale. That always keeps me
loose and relaxed.
Miki Jo Parish
This week’s high woman
for the third time is Miki Jo
Parish with a 215-267-264 for a
746 series at AMF Showplace
Euless Lanes.
THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, September 16, 2010 | Page 3
How does it feel to be the
first three-time participant in
the spotlight? I can’t believe it.
It’s a good feeling to know that
I can bowl that good.
Who is going to win the
Super Bowl this year? I am not a
football fan, but I will say, “Go
Cowboys”.
addition of a unique three-day
schedule of live television
Carolier had previously
hosted five consecutive U.S.
Opens between 2005 and 2009.
The U.S. Open, considered
by many to be the most challenging
title in all of bowling
to win, is an extreme test of
bowling skill, patience and
perseverance. What makes the
U.S. Open special is that nonprofessionals,
men or women,
are invited to compete against
the world’s top professionals on
difficult lane conditions that
place a high premium on accuracy
and precise shot-making.
O’Neill’s victory – his second of
“Bringing the position
round of the U.S. Open to a
national television audience is
something we are extremely
excited about,” said PBA deputy
commissioner Tom Clark. “The
energy of that round consistently
produces some of the
most exhilarating moments in
sports, but it’s a critical part
of PBA competition that only
spectators in the building and,
most recently, Xtra Frame subscribers,
ever get to witness.”
An example was the 2010
position round in Indianapolis
when eventual PBA Player of
the Year Walter Ray Williams
Jr., needed a seven-count on
his fill ball to clinch a spot
in the televised finals, but he
left four pins standing, ending
up tied with Norm Duke and
Bowling Update from
Tenpins & More
By Steve Mackie
Rio Rancho, NM
Miller-Mackie wins
third title this year
Dana Miller-Mackie won
her third title of the year on
Monday’s Labor Day Scratch
Series event at Tenpins & More,
having previously won the New
Year’s Day Scratch Series and
the Golden Ladies Classic in
Las Vegas in March.
Miller-Mackie at 54 became
the oldest bowler to win a
scratch series event, eclipsing
the record she had shared with
Chuck Patterson, who also won
when he was 53 years old.
She went through unbeaten
in five matches, often highlighted
by big scoring, that included
area Bowler-of-the-Year,
Carl Chavez beating Adrienne
Miller, 245-235, Kevin Richardson
over Brian Skidmore, 289-
248, Dan Brenning eliminating
Chavez, 225-215, Danny Cobine
putting out Skidmore, 236-219,
Richardson beating Brian
Hare then Zach Taylor, both of
Santa Fe, 218-214, and 226-226,
then 60-50 in the tie-breaker,
respectively.
Richardson then took a,
298-239, loss to Bob Dillman to
finish third, as Dillman, who
earlier set a new house record
in qualifying with 1,521/6
(253.5 average), was looking
for a rare back-to-back victory.
Standing in the way was
Miller-Mackie who had beaten
in order Miller, 222-181, twotime
New Mexico Open winner,
John Young, 199-184, Richardson,
197-170 and Dillman,
238-199.
The former 16-time PWBA
winner started with four
strikes in a row while Dillman
had a double and two spares
to be behind by 20 pins after
four frames. Dillman came
back with a three-bagger of his
own to lead by 21 after Miller-
Mackie opened her sixth and
seventh frames.
Miller-Mackie got three
strikes of her own to tie the
match, then pass Dillman
whose ball starting hitting too
much of the head-pin in his
final four shots, as the final
score-line 222-208 showed.
She won $1,000 of the
$2,380 prize-fund, sponsored
by Wayne Luco, DDS and
PIN POINTS
TO PONDER
By CHUCK PEZZANO
As I read about the Bridgestone
Invitational and watched
it on TV, the golf tournament
at the Firestone Country club
in Akron, OH, brought back
memories of pro bowling’s
finest hours during the years
the Firestone Tournament of
Champions held the spotlight,
not just in bowling, but as a
national sports happening.
The early T of C’s received
notice on the bottom line of
bowlers with a $25,000 first
prize and a $100,000 total prize
fund that was big enough for
the spread to include a prize
check assuring a profit for
every man skillful enough to
earn a spot in the field.
They were treated like pros
from start to finish with a
pre-tourney dinner at the Firestone
Country Club, a pro-am
studded with celebs from every
field and unmatched coverage
in the newspapers, on radio
and TV. The pictures of the
players were featured in every
store, hotel and other venues to
prove that the city and nearby
areas were number one fans
of bowling, for at least a week
anyhow.
A media group of more than
100 writers and broadcasters
took in part or all of the action
and brought publicity to outlets
that previously didn’t show
much interest in bowling.
As the years went by the
prize money went up, paying
winners as high as $65,000,
formerly a good year for any
player and more than $300,000
in total prizes, an unheard total
in the past. And champions
and high finishers, and even
those who didn’t do so well,
were hailed as stars and gained
publicity and special paying
assignments from the various
groups in the industry.
With the passing of time,
and changes at Firestone, the
dream tourney went downhill
and became difficult to produce,
though a big comeback
is slated next year as the PBA
presents a million dollar package
with a $250,000 top award.
But shed a tear and think
about what might have been if
some of the top executives who
control purse strings and also
like to bowl and take advantage
of bowling’s great people
power and people spending
take a second and third look at
bowling, not just at the tourney
of champions but the long list
of other bowling attractions
– men, women and children,
all over the world.
The Akron golf event had
an $8.5 million total purse and
the winner earned $1.4 million.
The first number is more than
the entire bowling tour pays
and the second number would
put the golfer among bowling’s
all-time leading money
winners.
In that single golf event 14
players pocketed more than
$100,000, more than 50 cashed
for $50,000 or more. Almost 30
of the bottom finishers had to
settle for $30,000 or more.
Don’t get me wrong, bowling
can’t expect to challenge
golf in the money field. Most
golf tournaments draw some
20,000 a day, paying admission
fees of more than $50, often
a lot higher, parking fees and
food and other purchases that
make every golf event a multi
million dollar enterprise.
We are bowling. We are
not golf. But we often have
as much or more to offer. We
deserve a piece of the action.
Let golf sponsors and those
knowing.
J.B. made it.
He won only $600 dollars,
but struck it rich on Bonus
Bowling.
He had Pug Echols as his
partner. They won five straight
times, collecting $500 a pop.
They finally lost by two pins
when show officials switched
from scratch to handicap
scoring.
“Pug failed to carry with a
solid pocket hit,” Roark said.
“I thought Pug was the best
bowler around at the time,”
said J.B.
J.B. threw it well then and
now, too, after overcoming
some physical woes.
All is extremely well now
after overcoming a quadruple
bypass and cancer.
He is 68.
He bowls in only one
league, but practices several
times a week.
He probably wouldn’t mind
if they brought back Bowling
for Dollars.
He would be ready.
NEW DICK WEBER PBA
Continued from Page 1
of discussion, we arrived at
the PBA Playoffs concept. We
think it’s going to become one
of the most exciting and most
anticipated events on tour.”
The PBA Playoffs, borrowing
a chapter from end-of-season
championship playoff series
in virtually every other sport,
will provide a showdown for
108 of the nation’s top regional
players along with 72 players
from the Lumber Liquidators
PBA Tour. The more points
each player earns during the
season in Regional or PBA Tour
competition will determine
his/her seeding position at
Playoffs time.
The new PBA Playoffs
format will include six unique
elimination “pods.” Each
pod will feature 18 top PBA
Regional players based upon
competition points accumulated
between Oct. 1, and Nov. 30,
2010. The PBA’s East, South,
Central, Southwest, Midwest
and combined West/Northwest
each will be assigned to a pod.
Each Regional pod also will
include 72 PBA Tour players
(12 per pod) seeded based upon
their 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators
PBA Tour competition
points rankings. The higherranking
Tour players will earn
bye rounds based upon their
standings on the points list.
The seeding of PBA Tour players
into the pods will be based
exclusively on points, and will
have no bearing on the region
where they live. The seeded
Tour players will be assigned
to pods by random drawing at
a later date.
The Dick Weber PBA
Playoffs is named in honor of
and raised in Indianapolis.
Do You Remember?

Page 16 | Thursday, September 16, 2010 | THE BOWLING NEWS
Last weekend I went to
Oklahoma to hang out with
some friends and family and to
bowl the SASBA member/guest
tournament at Holiday Lanes.
While at my wife’s friend’s
house I noticed that they had
installed some hardware flooring
and it looked fantastic.
My wife and I had discussed
putting in wood flooring, but
with the price of flooring plus
installation it just wasn’t in our
budget. However, my inquisitive
side kicked in and I began
to ask them all about it and
how they installed it.
The light bulb went on and I
began to think that I too might
be capable of laying down
wood flooring.
Now for those who don’t
know me, I’m not very handy
or creative. As a matter of fact,
I’m barely capable of hammering
nails into a fence, but for
some reason my confidence
was riding high. We researched
it and determined that if we
installed it ourselves, then we
can afford to do it.
We purchased the flooring
in Oklahoma and brought it
back with us. I put on some
grubby clothes and was ready
to begin destroying my house.
I decided to start by taking
off a few baseboards. After
slicing two fingers with a
blade, I decided that I needed
some additional tools and some
additional direction.
My sister-in-law came over
and told me that I needed to
pull up the carpet first and
then pull the carpet tacks.
While taking out the carpet
tack strip on one side of the
hall I forgot about the ones on
the other side and cut my foot
open twice.
Nowhere in the instructional
videos online does it
mention a Tetanus shot as a
tool needed, but I digress. We
then began to lay the floor and
determined that we needed to
cut some of the boards.
I assumed a jig saw was
sufficient, but I was wrong.
At Shenaniganz
Offutt snares
678 series
ROCKWALL — Trey Offutt’s
solid 216-255-207 = 678 Eazy
Rollerz series led scoring for
the week at Shenanignaz.
Jo Ellen Mitchell, Offutt’s
leaguemate, paced the ladies
with a nice 166-190-176 = 532
set.
OTHER SCORES
Carol Dziatlik 223-497.
After making a couple of
cuts it looked like a three year
old cut the board with scissors.
It was mangled and crooked
and I decided that I needed a
miter saw. Yet another trip to
the tool store and I am starting
to approach the “should I
have paid someone to do this”
question.
However, after my brother
saying that he fully expected
me to call someone to do it, I
am 100 percent committed to
installing this floor.
This weekend will be the
true test as we hope to get the
majority of the floor installed.
Stay tuned for more on this
developing story.
I wanted to thank my readers
for their feedback on last
week’s article on rituals and
superstitions.
One that stuck out for me
was from Mark Peet who bowls
at Red Bird. He brought up
the one I bet many of us have
done, which is putting your
hand out over the hand dryer
even if the hand dryer is broken
or non-existent. Another
one he pointed out was wiping
the ball with a towel even if
the lane is as dry as the Sahara
Desert. He also mentioned a
ritual his team performs, but I
will keep that to myself so his
opponents don’t try and tinker
with it. Who says that the
media has no conscience?
This week’s what is in
Daceman’s DVR is a comedy
called “She’s out of my League”
starring Jay Baruchel (Knocked
Up and Tropic Thunder) and
Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2).
The story is about an underdog
guy who seems to be stuck
in a dead in job, living with
his parents, and pathetically
picked on by just about everyone.
Until he runs into a “Hard
10” who is tired of dating the
studs and decides she wants
someone simpler. This movie
has the comedy factor and
scripting to be one of the cult
classics like Old School or The
Hangover, but I don’t remember
it being a huge movie when in
the theaters.
It grossed a little over 49
million, but I don’t know many
people who have seen it. That
makes this a bargain at the Red
Box as this movie is one of the
funniest I’ve seen in sometime.
It is a must rent for people who
don’t mind a little crudeness
and want a laugh. I give this
movie 3.5 out of 4 stars and
you won’t be disappointed.
