Don Wright’s column,
Wright in the Heart of Texas,
has appeared in the Bowling
News for the final time.
I hate that.
Don covered Central Texas
for us. Nobody could have done
it better.
A retired service man, Don
was always right on top of
anything happening in his
area. And other areas, too.
What caught your eye about
Don was that he had a deep,
sincere love for the game.
Bowling played a huge role
in his life, and he enjoyed it
immensely.
But he says he has a few too
many irons in the fire these
days and has to cut back.
His wife has had some
major health problems for
many years.
We wish him the best of
luck, and health. We will miss
him and his columns very
much.
Several times during the
last few years, the word was
that Jupiter Lanes was going
down. But the Jupiter faithful,
including quite a few bowlers
who have bowled at the center
almost 50 years kept holding
out hope that their old bowling
home was going to make it.
There was always talk about a
doctor buying it.
The center now is closed
and will stay closed unless
some miracle of miracles comes
along.
Among those who tried at
all times to look at the brighter
side was my buddy, 93-year-old
Mattie Garretson. She always
hoped the rumors were true.
She has bowled at the center
since it was built. Her husband
Whitey threw out the first ball
at the center, and was king of
the southpaws there for many
years.
Mattie took the news of
Jupiter’s last stand rather hard.
She had a locker at the
center for its entire life.
“I had paid in advance and
I want my money back,” she
said.
“You aren’t serious, are you,
Mattie?” she was asked.
“No,” she said, “but I would
like to have something from
the center to remind me of all
the fun we had over the years.”
It would be nice if somebody
gave her a brick or
something.
Linda Chambers’ trip to
Nationals was a disaster this
year. She didn’t bowl very well
and then, as she was unloading
after the trip, she broke a foot.
James LeCroy
This week’s high man is
James LeCroy with a 258-278-268
for an 804 series at Brunswick
Zone Watauga Lanes. The Lecroy
family is legendary in Texas, father
James, mother Kat, daughter
Kathleen, and son Kris were the
second family of four to have all
shot a 300 game. Once Kathleen
shoots an 800 series, they will be
the sixth family to have achieved
that milestone as well.
What is your high series? 834
at Berry Bowl in 1981. I have 3
800’s.
How many 300’s have you
bowled? 30.
What ball did you throw? The
Ebonite Magic. It has turned out
to be a really good ball.
Who drills your balls? James
Askins for about 20 years.
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? The Bleeder Yellow
Dot.
What is your average in PBA
Experience league? 204.
What is your all-time high average?
231 at Forest Park Lanes,
back when you played the twig.
We always threw it up the first
and second board out there.
How long have you been bowling?
I started when I was 20, so 46
years now. I was in the military,
so we bowled on the base and
when I got back home I started
in a league.
What part of the lane were you
playing when you shot this series?
It was on the Cheetah pattern so
I was playing straight up three.
Everything just kept falling.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? It boils down to Norm
Duke and Del Ballard Jr. I have
known them both since they
were teenagers.
Most memorable bowling moment?
It would be that first 300 in
1979 at Meadowbrook. I had the
first the nine strikes in league a
few days earlier, left an 8-10 split
and thought I would never shoot
300. But then three days later I
shot 300.
How many leagues do you
bowl in? I bowl in two leagues,
and have for probably about 20
years.
Other thoughts on the big
series? I bowled this in a PBA
Experience league where they
change the shot every two weeks.
I find this type of league much
more challenging and fun. This
night I got comfortable and loose
and bowled really well. I realized
that I needed to strike out in the
ninth and 10th for the 800, and it
felt really good to get it done.
Other thoughts? I would like
to say how much I have always
admired Bob McGregor and Greg
Derrick for the faith and how
they live it every day. I have
always had so much respect and
admiration for those two.
James’s tip of the week: Good
quality practice is the main thing,
THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, July 8, 2010 | Page 3
where you don’t worry about the
score. That’s the main area that
really helped my game improve
from 190’s to the 200’s.
Padilla and Edwards put title on
line at USBC Open Championships
RENO, NV — A year ago,
Brenda Edwards and Stephen
Padilla of Mansfield, teamed up
for the highest doubles total in
United States Bowling Congress
Open Championships history,
and although they won’t repeat
as Regular Doubles champions,
they always will share a spot
in the record books.
The two were at the National
Bowling Stadium last
weekend to put their title on
the line and a disappointing
performance in team Saturday
only motivated them more
heading into doubles and
singles June 27.
When the lights came on
for doubles, they showed they
were ready to make a good
showing. Edwards, a 35-yearold
right-hander, led the way
with games of 209, 234 and 277
for a 720 series, while Padilla,
a 33-year-old right-hander,
contributed 233, 245 and 179
for 657 and a 1,377 total. Steve
Bohn of Norwood, MN, and
John Kreyer Jr. of Fridley, MN,
lead Regular Doubles this year
with 1,514.
“Obviously, doubles
definitely had some extra
significance this year,” said
Padilla, who works for USBC as
a coaching specialist and is an
assistant coach for Team USA.
“We both came into this year’s
tournament excited about
getting a chance to revisit a
venue we both enjoy and also
about getting to bowl and have
a good time with our friends.
We didn’t start well in team
and have to figure out how to
get off to a better start in the
team event down the road. It
was nice to bowl well again in
doubles, though.”
Last year in Las Vegas,
Edwards and Padilla took home
the doubles title with a record
score of 1,566, and since they
recently bought a new house
and will be getting married
on New Year’s Eve, their eagle
trophies forever will be perched
together on their mantle.
“This last year has been
such a roller coaster ride,”
said Edwards, who won the
2010 USBC Team USA Trials
and made her seventh Open
Championships appearance
last weekend. “My success on
the lanes last year, coupled
with Stephen asking me to
marry him, winning the Team
USA Trials and USBC going
through some changes, made
for a crazy year. I have had
to endure some stress trying
to find a teaching position as
well, but you really learn to
appreciate the different things
in life.”
Edwards went on to finish
the 2009 event in record fashion
with a 300 game in singles
on the way to a 2,132 all-events
total, the highest by a woman
in tournament history. Her
erfect game was just the sixth
by a woman on the champion-
ship lanes. Women first were
allowed to compete in 1994.
This year’s finish wasn’t
quite as strong after she
tweaked her knee during
singles. She finished with a 574
series to go along with 462 in
team for a 1,756 all-events effort.
Padilla had 573 in singles
and 558 in team for 1,788.
“We didn’t want to put a
lot of pressure on ourselves
coming into this year,” said
Padilla, who made his sixth
Open Championships appearance.
“We came in wanting to
enjoy what was going on, but
keep a level head, make good
shots and have fun. We didn’t
bowl as well as we wanted,
but we got to celebrate the fact
that we were successful last
year. We are really excited for
the chance to come back to the
venue year after year and see
how long our record holds up.”
PIN POINTS
TO PONDER
By CHUCK PEZZANO
Idle bowling thoughts.
…I happen to live near a
mountain, a little one, but
one that does have plenty of
wildlife. So it’s no surprise
when you see an animal here
or there. But one morning I
was up early and there on my
lawn, a little lawn, pranced
nine large wild turkeys. In less
than 20 minutes the gathering
had increased to 19. My bowling
side of my brain quickly
calculated that if I was bowling
those 19 gobblers would have
translated into 57 strikes.
…The best motto ever used
in bowling was the simple
one of bring a friend. If every
bowler, even now and then,
brought along a friend to bowl,
and maybe join or rejoin a
league, it wouldn’t be long
before the bowlers would need
more centers.
…Behind every star bowler
is an instructor who claims
there’s a good instructor
behind every star bowler. Yet
nothing is more exasperating
than a bowler who can instruct
well, and won’t, unless it is a
bowler who can’t teach and
does.
…Award programs are
important and after a century
of promoting various award
programs by various groups for
a wide variety of bowlers, care
must be taken when awards
are eliminated. On the outside
most bowlers try hot to show
emotion when they receive
awards, but inside they’re
bursting with pride. Have you
ever visited any bowler’s home
or business and not seen a
trophy, plaque or emblem on
display?
…Back in 1970 Elvin Mesger
was the leader in sanctioned
300 games with 22. He was
followed by George Billick with
17, Dick Weber at 16 and Lindy
Faragalli with 15. The only
difference now is that those
numbers were for a career and
similar numbers currently
posted are for a year.
…The determining of a pro
or amateur remains confusing.
The only sure thing is that
if you are a member of the
Professional Bowlers Association,
you are indeed classified
as a pro.
…A very palatial estate in
New Jersey has been on sale
for a mere $19.5 million. The
impressive digs have practically
everything, and if you’re
a bowler with bucks, the
deciding factor could be the
two-lane bowling center on the
property.
…Glad to see the emphasis
in bowling is back on the sport
side of the game. Over the
years, dozens of top bowling
writers have endorsed such
thinking.
…Why do we call it the
“foul” line? Why not call it the
THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, July 8, 2010 | Page 7
“fair” line.
…It’s good to see Doug Kent
receive recognition. He’s been
a very underrated bowler for
most of his long career, except
to his opponents.
…If you tire of hearing so
many problems in the doings of
athletes who command megabuck
salaries, take pride in the
informed his bowler patient
that he was now cured. “That’s
SPOTLIGHT
Continued from Page 3
house, works for S&K Sales in
Southlake.
What is your high series?
This is probably my high
series.
How many 300’s have you
bowled? None. My high is 299,
but it was many years ago.
What ball did you throw?
The Columbia Game Breaker.
I liked the Ebonite V2 when it
came out, and this ball is very
similar.
Who drills your balls? James
Askins for about 26 years now.
What is your all-time
favorite bowling ball? I would
have to say the Ebonite V2.
What is your average in the
Mo’s Matchpoint league? It’s
my highest average ever, 217. I
hadn’t bowled at Cityview in a
few years, but everything has
been clicking.
How long have you been
bowling? This is my 30th year.
I got some lessons from Jim
Murtishaw when I lived in
California. He helped my with
my arm swing.
feature story division in The
Bowling Magazine’s national
writing contest.
He continued to write tennis
and bowling articles and stories
for the Daytona Beach News-
Journal until his death. His
bowling stories have appeared
in every national bowling
magazine published plus many
local bowling publications. His
stories have appeared on www.
Bowlingdigitial.com for more
than a decade which resulted
in email comments from readers
in Europe, Israel, Canada
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? Earl Anthony. I followed
him all through his
career. Also, I have always
been a fan of Parker Bohn,
another lefty.
Most memorable bowling
moment? When I shot my 299
at Watauga, I’m still waiting on
a 300. I remember that I wasn’t
bowling particularly well that
day, but everything worked for
that one game.
How many leagues do you
bowl? I bowl two in the fall and
two in the summer.
Other thoughts on the big
series? Not sure why I have
been bowling so well lately.
I am bowling with a bunch
of friends that I bowled with
in the fall, we have all been
bowling well and Cityview just
agrees with me.
Julie’s tip of the week: Bill
Harris always said to stay
down until the ball hits the
pins. I am still trying perfect
that tip.
and Asia.
Dick Evans is survived by
his wife Joan Gano Evans, son,
Joe Lopez wins the
Brunswick Challenge
in Las Vegas
By Tyson Branagan
Staff Writer
In his first return trip to
Las Vegas in five years to bowl
the megabuck tournaments
Joe Lopez, of Rockwall, threw
the final strike at the Orleans
Bowling Center and was the
last man standing in the
Brunswick Challenge event to
take home a $5,000 check for
winning.
As a special side event
of the TAT Amateur Classic
tournament, the Brunswick
Challenge requires bowlers to
use Brunswick bowling balls
exclusively to get nine or better
on each shot in the finals, with
bowlers who get eight or less
being eliminated until the final
four bowlers are remaining.
Once the final four bowlers
are determined, all are guaranteed
at least $1,000, and then
must strike on three of five
shots across five lanes, or be
eliminated.
Drawing the fourth and
final position to bowl, Lopez
resident Aric Acon throw the
necessary three strikes, along
with Debbie Ayers, while Brent
Bowers failed to advance.
Lopez got up and struck on
his first attempt, then threw
poor shots on his next two attempts,
putting the pressure on
himself to strike on his final
two to advance.
Lopez did just that, and it
was on to a one-ball sudden
death roll-off between the three
bowlers.
“I struck the first ball then
pitched the next two out to the
gutter,” said Lopez. “I just got
up there on the fourth and fifth
balls and told myself to relax
and throw it.”
In sudden death, Lopez and
Ayers both struck, while Acon
managed only to get only eight
and therefore was eliminated.
It was now down to Lopez
and Ayers for the $5,000 prize,
with the loser taking home
$1,000 so there was plenty of
pressure. It only took one more
shot, as Ayers got nine and
Lopez struck, earning himself
the largest payday in his bowling
career.
“It feels good,” said Lopez
on winning. “I was nervous
when we got to the $1,000
round, but managed to keep
calm and make good shots.”
Lopez earned his entry into
the Challenge as part of the
marathon entry where bowlers
pay a one-time fee and get
multiple main event entries,
two Brunswick High Performance
balls, the new C-System
4.5 and Revolver, as well as a
plastic ball, and an entry into
the Challenge.
Lopez used the new Revolver
all the way through to
the victory.
“It is a very good ball,”
said Lopez on the Revolver. “It
works well as a heavy oil ball
and I was impressed at how
smooth it rolled for me, giving
me confidence throughout,”
Lopez added.
Lopez also qualified for
the main event finals on July
2 with a 665 score to earn
himself a shot at the $20,000
TAT Classic first prize on July
4th.
He advanced two rounds
into the finals before being
eliminated, taking home an
additional $700 for the tournament
and making the long
drive home from Las Vegas to
Rockwall much sweeter.
“I couldn’t afford to fly out
there. I can now, but I am just
going to enjoy the long drive
home,” Lopez said.
I’m going to assume I am
out here on my own with this
opinion, but I think Lebron
James is everything that’s
wrong with free agency in
sports.
Just like most people, I enjoy
thinking about the possibility
of a top-tier player coming
to my favorite team, but if this
Lebron James debacle is the
result, then count me out.
Financial advisors always
say not to put all your eggs in
one basket, but that’s exactly
what some NBA teams are doing
by trying to create enough
salary cap space to go after
Lebron.
James, by no fault of his
own, seems to be holding the
entire NBA hostage. Currently
it looks like there are three
or four teams fighting to get
James, and the stakes are
certainly high, but only one of
these teams is going to get him.
The teams that don’t win
the Lebron sweepstakes are going
to stink for years to come.
The New Jersey Nets and
the New York Knicks have
been planning and tweaking
the roster for two years now
preparing to make a run at
Lebron.
The problem is that neither
one of them will probably get
him. What does that mean for
these two franchises? Is it fair
to the fans or the city to leave
so much up to chance?
The NBA is lucky that
the Los Angeles Lakers and
the Boston Celtics are so
good right now, because any
league is tough to keep going
when the city of New York is
uninterested.
I wish we could go back to
the days where guys stayed
with the same team for the
majority of their career. Karl
Malone, Michael Jordan, Larry
Bird, those types of players are
faces of franchises.
Lebron is a Cavalier and
should stay a Cavalier. He has
taken a poor franchise and
single handedly built them into
a power house.
All I have to say is one
thing to Lebron James, finish
what you started and stay in
Cleveland.
Don’t look now, but your
Texas Rangers are playing
some excellent baseball and
have found themselves with
a three and a half game lead
almost half way through the
season.
Although I am excited about
the potential for an October
playoff run, I’m hesitant to get
excited because we have seen
this scenario before. The Rangers
have a tendency to sink in
the second half, and with the
problems with ownership lurking
in the background, things
are too shaky to start thinking
about the playoffs.
Still, it should be a fun
second half of the season and
I’m actually going to attend a
game as soon as Pro Cuts sends
me my free tickets for spending
$20 or more.
I just read an article that the
new Cowboys Stadium is going
to host the 2011 Women’s U.S.
Open.
This is a huge event for
bowling and will be an awesome
place to display our sport.
I would like to see every
bowling fan in the Metroplex
come out and support this
event, as Cowboys Stadium
holds about 95,000 more people
than what a bowling center
will hold.
My odds-on favorite to win
the event is April Ellis. She
already has experience on the
Cowboy Stadium field after
running the 5k event there
with me a few months back.
She has already seen as much
playing time on the field as
There were so many stars
in this movie it was hard to
believe. However, it felt like
they spent more time filling
cameo roles then they did
writing the movie.
Although I liked the format
of the movie, which was
several story lines that intertwined,
the delivery was not
so good. Just when you started
to get into the story it would
switch gears and take you
down another path that wasn’t
as interesting.
Taylor Swift makes an
appearance in the movie, but
she was just as irritating in the
movie as she is in her acceptance
speeches in real life.
Overall, I give the movie
two stars, but make sure you
have a woman with you when
you go get it. You don’t want
all the people standing behind
you at Red Box thinking how
pathetic you are for renting it
journalism career at the age
of 12, delivering the Miami
News. The youngest of three
Evans brothers to write for The
Miami Herald, at age 14 he was
hired to take greyhound racing
results and write headlines for
short stories. At age 17, he officially
joined the Miami Herald
staff when he was hired as a
copy-boy. At age 20, he was
added to the Miami Herald’s
sports department staff.
For the Miami Herald, Evans
spent 14 months serving as
interim religious editor.
He once organized and ran
a Dade County High school
baseball tournament that
featured North Miami High’s
Steve Carlton (a Hall of Famer)
and Fred Norman, a future
star with the Chicago Cubs, in
a taut pitchers duel at Miami
During the Baltimore
Orioles spring training season
in Miami he organized a
His most successful
promotion came when he
teamed with Joe Tanenbaum
Evans retired from The
However, the native Miamian
Two of his brothers, the late
