Weber wins PBA Tournament of Champions
Completes PBA “Triple
ties Earl Anthony for most
PBA major titles
INDIANAPOLIS – Professional
Bowlers Association
Hall of Famer Pete Weber of
St. Ann, Mo., wrote another
chapter in bowling history
Sunday when he defeated Australian
two-handed star Jason
Belmonte, 224-179, to win the
Barbasol PBA Tournament of
Champions at Woodland Bowl.
The victory made Weber the
first player to complete the PBA
Triple Crown for a second time
and tied bowling legend Earl
Anthony for most major PBA
titles with 10.
one of the professional tour’s
Las Vegas – Two USBC Hall
of Famer’s battled it out as Tish
Johnson added to her impressive
title list with her first career
“Senior” championship by
defeating Robin Romeo 213-204.
Jeanette Robinson has been
hosting this prestigious event for
23 years and is the 1st leg of the
Triple Crown* that includes the
Women’s Senior U.S. Open and
Senior Queens. The tournament
sponsored by Storm, with added
money by the Women’s Bowling
Alliance (WBA), drew 90 of
the nation’s top 50+ women
bowlers and included 39 super
seniors (60+).
The final stepladder match
saw Johnson maintain the
lead through the 5th frame
before leaving back to back
splits, 7-10 and 4-6-7-10. She
then proceeded to roll 3 strikes
in a row forcing Romeo to
double in the 10th for the win.
Romeo left a ringing 10 pin on
the lane she had previously
struck every shot. In previous
stepladder matches, Sharon
Aronson defeated Carol Teel
216-210, Aronson defeated Pam
Pancoast 255-225, Robin Romeo
defeated Aronson 219-205.
In the Super Senior Division,
Janet Romig shot 257 the final
Maverick Lanes, located in
Marshall, TX is the newest center
to join The Bowling News’
family of bowling centers.
The center was originally
built in 1985, but new owner
Bill Holler purchased the
place in April 2011, and says
that the building has changed
hands eight times in its 28-year
history.
Maverick Lanes is currently
an 18-lane center, but used to
be 24 lanes. A previous owner
removed six of the lanes to
build a dance hall, and now
those extra six machines are
used for spare parts, so 18 is
all they will ever have.
Marshall when he bought the
center. He started bowling
when he was four years old,
and even met his wife bowling,
which is a pretty common
theme for most of us bowlers as
you might imagine.
His main goals are to get
the center looking and feeling
like a home to his customers.
The previous owner had spent
some money on new fixes for
the building like carpet, paint
and a new roof, but Holler’s
background is in the residential
real estate market, where he
was primarily involved in doing
most of the contract work
Random Thoughts
This week’s USBC Open
Championship’s high-water
mark was left by none other
than Chris Greene of Wichita,
KS. Greene is a buddy of mine
and the landlord to Derek
Hartnell, who we talked with
two weeks ago after he led the
Doubles event with his father.
As luck would have it for
Greene, he slapped little Derek
right out of the top spot after
shooting 1403 with partner Joe
Keltner. Chris said his favorite
part of the weekend was
sending a text to his friends
informing them that he was the
new household leader, not to
mention the leader of all double
teams, so far.
Greene, a Wichita State
Alum, who already owns one
USBC Eagle by way of his
Team title in 2008, was said
to be seen building a new
trophy case to house all of the
new birds he may be soon in
possession of. See, it wasn’t just
doubles that he got a taste of,
his team is also in the lead for
Team All-Events with 10065,
just the 34th team ever to
post a 45-game total over the
10-dime number. Their team,
Team Tilt, is currently in 4th
place after shooting 3326, but
they quickly turned their attention
to the Team All-Events
title after watching teammate
Keltner take over the individual
All-Events lead with 2154. And
they were able to post a number
that left them in the lead by
299 pins. Greene made a solid
contribution to the team score
by shooting 1953 in All-Events.
I would love to give you
Greene with a look of “Shock” on
his face after WSU advances to
the Final Four.
some great quotes from Chris
on his experience, and why
they were able to bowl so good
as a unit, but for as awesome
as he is in other areas, he’s
not a great interviewee. The
bottom line is that they were
able to break down a nice little
hook spot from 7-9 (boards)
FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM 1956-2009
and after the first six frames
had a solid hook spot and a
bunch of hold. So all future
teams…focus on that spot on
the lane and get your team to
start there, it will pay off.
Now the interview wasn’t
all bad though, Greene did say
that, “coming out of that title
in 2008, you never know if
and when the stars will align,
so you better enjoy each and
every ride,” and I totally agree
with that. The stars did align
for them one more time, and
they are one happy group. Ole’
Greene didn’t have a stellar
2012 USBC Open, and he said
he was on a mission to save
face, which he clearly did.
So now both of my Wichita
Swiss teammates, Hartnell and
Greene, have left Reno with
a picture and story on Bowl.
com, and their name at the top
of the doubles leaderboard, so
the pressure is squarely on my
narrow shoulders when it’s my
turn in June. Or as I like to
say, on Genie’s shoulders. She’s
now on the hook for like 780,
so I can slide a little 692 or
something in there and we can
restore some Texas pride.
During the course of the
brutal 20-minute interview with
Chris, he did however offer one
interesting piece of intel; that
he wanted to thank Gilbey’s Gin
(house Gin at the stadium), for
getting him lined up, but most
importantly for loosening his
arm-swing up. I’m in no way
advising gin as a method to success,
but for that orange-haired
man from Wichita, it has a solid
track record.
Schotanus 300
Steve Fleck and Chad Lemen
tied for the top spot on the honor
roll last week at Cityview Lanes
by polishing off robust 793
numbers. Fleck fired games of
225-278-290 in Harry Carlberg
Eng action and Lemen posted
games of 244-279-269 in Billie &
Les High Pot league play.
Diane James carded
commendable numbers 206-
246-242 = 694 in T.G.I.F. league
action to pace the lady bowlers.
Greg Schotanus’ award-
Jason Radloff
This week’s high male is
Jason Radloff with a 299-259-
289=847 series in the Company
league at Eastridge Lanes.
Originally from Amarillo,
Jason works at Eastridge Lanes
as the Desk Manager and is a
part-time student at West Texas
A&M. The WTAMU men’s
team won their bid to the USBC
Intercollegiate Team Championships,
so Radloff plans to go to
Lincoln, NE to cheer them on.
What is your high series? 847
is my high series, I shot 810
earlier in the year, which was
my first 800 series.
How many 300’s have you
bowled? I bowled my third 300
a week after the 847.
Thoughts on your big night?
I just had surgery on torn
meniscus a few weeks prior, so
I took a few pain killers and
I was feeling lucky. The shot
stayed pretty consistent, so I
was able to play straight up ten
the whole night.
What ball did you throw?
Reign of Power
Who drills your balls? Jeff
Campbell at Western Bowl
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? Virtual Gravity
Nano because it’s Florida
Gators’ school colors – orange
and blue. (Radloff attended
University of Florida before
coming back home to attend
WTAMU)
What is your all-time high
average? 228 last summer at
Eastridge, my current average
is 222.
How long have you been
bowling? I started bowling
a little over two years ago,
but didn’t start bowling after
graduating high school. My
uncle has been a mechanic
at Eastridge for 15 years, so I
came up to visit him and got
hooked.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? Big Nasty (Wes Malott)
– I’m sticking with the WT
thing.
Most memorable bowling
moment? The first 800 because
I felt I was finally getting there.
The PBA Tournament of
Champions was held this week
in Indianapolis. The field
consists of the 48 most recent
PBA tour titlists, plus any
past winners of the TOC that
elect to bowl. This year, Brian
Himmler had the final spot and
was “on the bubble” to bowl if
there was no new PBA titlist at
the Brunswick Euro Challenge
in Munich, Germany last week.
Instead, Ronnie Russell wins
for his first European Bowling
Tour title, his first World
Bowling Tour title and, because
of the agreement between the
PBA and the WTBA, his first
career PBA international title
giving him the 48th spot in the
TOC.
I’ve talked about some
of the international events
counting as PBA tour titles
before, but should they? I
looked through the roster and
there were 14 that I could
count that were regulars on the
PBA tour, and six of those were
international players. Granted,
Russell still had to beat some
of the best in the world to win,
but should it be a tour title
when a small percentage of the
last week at Plano Super Bowl
with booming numbers of 279-
Steve Amigh and Casey
series. Amigh downed a 299
solo for an 814 Sportsman series
while Powell turned in an 807
series in a Pepsi Classic outing.
Pam Garcia, from the Friday
for the ladies with a high-flying
233-190-267 = 690 set.
There was no pressure of the
TV show, and no pressure of
having to wait until the next
day to bowl the three-player
stepladder finals. It sounds
more like a regional title to me.
The PBA does qualify WTBA
wins as a PBA international
title, but they still count as
actual tour titles as far as the
TOC, point list, and earnings
and other statistics go.
Is it really fair for the
international titles to count towards
the PBA titles and point
list? Look at Wes Malott for
example. Going into this week,
Wes is in the running for this
year’s PBA Player of the Year.
He is the leader in averages
and second in points, yet he
has only bowled the 12 regular
PBA tour events and cashed
7 times. Mika has bowled
17 events because of all the
international stuff, even though
he also only has 7 cashes, he
is still the money leader so far
this season because he won
two titles. Belmonte is second
in averages and the competition
points leader with one
title and 7 cashes in 14 events
FRISCO – Steve Ray led the
week with a lofty 215-237-238 =
690 J C Penney’s league showing.
Loren Tenczar led the ladies
162-469, Jordan Duyck 246-658, Debbie
Colby 243-553, Carlos Salfor 215-609.
putting him third in the money
list. Rash has bowled most of
the international tournaments,
so he has 16 events with 9
chases including a win in
Kuwait to be second in money,
third in averages, and third
in points. Is it really fair that
in order to be PBA POY you
have to leave your family and
travel the world to bowl all the
WTBA international events and
not just the PBA tour events?
Ok, enough about the international
titles, let’s get back to
the Tournament of Champions
this week. There was a lot of
talk about how high the scoring
pace was again this week.
Let’s remember, these are the
best of the best, all winners,
and all capable of winning
again. It is no surprise that
there were high scores and a
lot of high rev rates are on the
show for Easter Sunday. We
should get to see a lot of strikes
and plenty of pins flying
around. We get both 2-handers
on tour starting with Osku
Palermaa against the number
four seed Tommy Jones, who
I’m glad to see back in the
hunt. The winner will then
face Sean Rash to determine
who will take on number two
seed, Jason Belmonte.
The story to watch is the
number one seed, “Mr. Who
do you think you are?” PDW,
Pete Weber. If he wins this
year’s TOC it will be a record
breaking tournament. Weber
will be the only person who
"This is a great incentive
for bowlers to compete on the
same lane conditions used in
PBA competition," said Pete
Tredwell, USBC Managing
Director of Membership and
Events. "If you have watched
the PBA Tour on TV, the pros
bowl on these same lessforgiving
To be eligible for the PBA
the PBA Experience
The Summer of ‘93
By Xeno Garcia
In the summer of 1993, at
the age of 13, I sat and watched
another edition of the Professional
Bowler’s Tour televised
finals. As I did every week.
It was the 1993 PBA Greater
Harrisburg Open featuring
newcomer Brian Davis bowling
Walter Ray Williams Jr in the
final match. In his first ever
National Tournament, He not
only made the televised finals,
but had the opportunity to not
only bowl a perfect game on
television and to pocket an
additional $110,000. He was
I’ll never forget watching the
tenth frame of this match and
feeling every bit as nervous
as he did. His body language
began to change with every
shot. It was a feeling so tense
you could hardly move, barely
breath,… a real feeling of
paralysis starting at the neck,
all the way through your arms
and down to your knees.
I spent the next few years
similar situation. A single
game or a single shot could
change my direction in the
game. Because it can. I’ve
been very lucky to have found
myself in those situations. One
game to win a tournament, one
shot to win a tournament. It’s
become what this entire game
is about to me. I bowl to win.
Every time I put my shoes on,
my plan is to become the very
best out there or I simply don’t
bowl. It’s a mindset I need in
order to compete, otherwise I’m
just going through the motions
and that road usually leads to
nowhere.
My goal is to get myself
into position first and then take
advantage of the opportunity.
I’ve failed many times and
it’s not until you lose that
you begin to learn. You don’t
get do-overs in this game,…
every frame counts, every ball
counts. One bad shot can cost
you everything. One great shot
can open many doors for you
in the future. I’ve been bowling
tournaments for 18 years
and I remember the losses as
well as I remember the wins.
The highs and lows of this
game is what keep’s all of us
coming back. Everyone deals
with pressure in their own
way. The greats of the game
relish every moment and that
is what makes them who they
are. They are who I always
wanted to be. I’m 34 years old
now and I still haven’t achieved
all of my goals. I continue to
practice, I continue to work,
and I continue to picture myself
on that stage where I feel
I belonged years ago. Similar
to that stage Brian Davis found
himself in the summer of ’93
with the first nine strikes and
a chance at a PBA History.
In the 10th frame, Davis
went strike, strike, with the
crowd roaring loudly after
his release. You could see his
nerves were beginning to wear
on him even though he was
already a winner. His final shot
was a little left of target and he
left a two pin, 299-267 was the
final score. The crowd groaned
and then came to their feet,
giving him a standing ovation.
BOWLING BUFFS…
The Bowlin’ Buffs have been very busy the last couple of
months, in the month of February West Texas A&M clinched
yet another SWIBC Championship title for the men and
women. WT’s Jimmy Ewell was named SWIBC Player of the
Year ending the year with an average of 214. Dylan Macon
West Texas A&M University
BOWLING
from Ennis TX also made the All-Conference Team with an average of 203. For the women,
WT had 3 ladies make the All-Conference Team. Ashley and Brianne Hansen from McKinney
TX and Jules Stockham from Wichita KS made the Team for the 2012-2013 season.
After clinching the SWIBC Championship Titles, it was off to Sectionals in Las
Vegas NV. ITC Sectional Tournament is the tournament that decides which teams go to
Nationals in April at Lincoln NE. This tournament is comprised of 64 Baker games over a
2 day period, in order to do well in this tournament a team must bowl as a team. To qualify
for Nationals, a team must place in the top 4, the WT Women came up a little short by
placing 6th at Sectionals missing the top 4 by 170 pins. However the WT Men came
into Sectionals as a slight underdog coming off our poor performance at the Hoosier, and
showed everyone what West Texas A&M bowling is all about. The men not only qualified
for Nationals but did something they haven’t been able to do since 2003, the men are
the 2013 West Sectional Champions! It has been a few years since the men have been
to Nationals and I’m so happy that seniors Seth Rutledge, Jonathan Lawson, and Brian
Burkett are able to experience the excitement of bowling in Collegiate Nationals. The men
are working hard to gain another National Championship for West Texas A&M, so please
keep up with us this month at Lincoln NE on Bowl.com April 18th -20th.
I’m exciting about the new faces joining us in the fall of 2013, Drew Claus from
McKinney TX has sign his letter of intent. Drew is a prominent lefty with lots of
tournament experience and really looking forward to coaching another lefty. Also signing
his letter of intent is Jake Whitson from Richardson TX. Jake will be a great addition to
the men’s team in the fall. Mason Edmondson from Amarillo TX has committed to West
Texas. Mason is very strong 2-handed left-hand bowler that is able to play all parts of
the lane. I have seen Mason the last few years developed into a very dominate player and
looking forward to him joining the team in the fall. Keith Gardner from Houston TX has
committed to West Texas, Keith is a right-handed 2- handed bowler that just recently
switched to two hands. It is a risky decision that has paid off with a 300 game, so Keith
is bringing his powerful 2-handed game to WT
in the fall of 2013. That is about it for this
month, please keep up with us on Bowl.com
What is your high series? 801
What is your high game? I
I threw one ball, the Mutant
had it when I was a teenager.
What is your all-time high
but my average will be higher
this year if I continue my
scoring pace. Right now, I am
averaging 219.
How long have you been
bowling? I started bowling
when I was 3 or 4 in LaPorte,
Indiana at Thunderbird Lanes.
I competed in High School
when he was flipping houses,
so a putting in a little elbow
grease is no worry to him.
Maverick Lanes currently
has three leagues, along with
a no-tap league on Friday.
They have almost tripled the
amount of teams they have
in leagues over the last year,
and are a member of the East
Texas Men’s & Women’s TCBA,
which has helped grow their
exposure. As for youth leagues,
that is an area of focus, and
something that he is working
towards growing come the fall
season.
Holler is also a strong
advocate of social media to
help grow his business. He
has a Facebook page, but also
understands that great customer
service goes a long way
towards retaining bowlers. He
mentioned that a lot of customers
said they heard the center
was under new ownership so
they have come back to give
it a try, which is music to his
ears!
For the near future he
would like to host some big
tournaments, and get the
competitive bowlers into his
center. They have a Pro Shop,
which he runs, along with a
Snack bar, and cosmic bowling
on Sat at 9 p.m. Make sure to
come visit this vibrant center
which is making its mark in
east Texas.
Just Paying
Attention By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
Three out of ten. Thirty
percent. Three of a kind. Am
I referring to the “Last Call”
columnist luck at the tables?
Nope, that’s her losing percentage.
Anyway, within the span
of seven days, three teams with
people I know found their way
onto the leaderboard at the
2013 USBC Open Championships.
I’ve been bowling these
tournaments since spring break
in 1982, and have seen one,
two, but never three in the
top ten at the same time (as
of press time). Yes, I know it’s
early, but I can’t remember the
last time this happened. Here’s
a little about each, not included
in your press release written
by Matt Cannizzaro or Aaron
Smith.
Stars and Strikes #1 from
Channahon, Illinois includes
the husband and wife team
of Steve and Nikki Lunsford.
Steve opened a pro shop in his
basement before moving it to a
bowling center about five years
ago. Nikki bowled with Liz
Johnson’s record-setting team
at the 2010 USBC Women’s
Championships, shooting a
3436 set. I’ve known her just
after her days at Illinois State
University when she was winning
association doubles titles
with my first wife. Nikki won
the Illinois High School Association
(IHSA) 1987-88 girls
individual gold medal in her
junior year and silver medal in
her senior year for Joliet West
High School (DWTS Spoiler
Alert: Yes, it’s the same high
school that produced Andy
Dick, go figure). They had the
lead for all of 24 hours; they’re
now in eighth, 136 pins behind
the leaders.
Upstream from the Des
Plaines River, then east on
U.S. Route 52, is Joliet Town
and Country Lanes #1. Sound
familiar? It should. They were
2001 USBC team co-champions
with Don Genalo’s KJ Excavating
team. T&C owner George
Kontos has hosted every type
of bowling outing and tournament
all the way from Big
Brother/Big Sisters fundraisers
to Midwest Regional and
National Tour stops for both
pro organizations over the
years, (Chris Hardwick’s dad
was runner up in the first in
‘68, won the second in ‘69.)
The four-foot tall USBC
team champion’s trophy sits in
a case just outside the bar entrance.
If you ask George or his
father John, I’m sure they’ll tell
you a few Jim Stefanich stories.
Or the one about the ‘Just
Paying Attention’ columnist
in the monthly local bowling
paper, who actually shot a 300
there one crazy day. Joliet T&C
came up 12 pins short of the
lead with 3346.
As if those two teams
weren’t enough, there’s the
third. The current leaders,
Breakpoint Pro Shop #2 of
Sartell, Minnesota with 3358.
The two team members I’ve
known the longest were traveling
the PBA Midwest Regional
tour when I started back in the
‘80s, Barry Zimmerman and
Jeff Smith. Z-Man works for
the North Dakota Department
of Transportation and bowled
the few fall and winter PBA
stops. He won the last PBA
Midwest Regional held between
Christmas and New Year’s in
Appleton, Wisconsin in 1989
over Pete Weber. One of the
scorekeepers said it was the
coldest New Year’s weekend
in northeast Wisconsin since
when long-time Cowboy fans?
I remember being awed by this
guy’s story sitting in Lambeau
Field watching the Ice Bowl in
person while the frozen tundra
transitioned form legendary
to iconic. He went 150 over
for those four games to go
from nowhere to matchplay on
Sunday.
Then there is a PBA
Midwest Regional legend,
Jeff T. Smith of Little Falls,
Minnesota. Nine regional titles,
and his story of the run to the
2003 PBA Great Lakes Classic
television finals that still hasn’t
gotten old a decade later. He
didn’t bowl PBA events the
last few years after buying his
boss’ house-painting business,
which keeps him busy in the
summers. His 762 series led the
team, and I’m sure the bracket
window needed some extra
The anchorman of their
together for my last two years
at St. Cloud State, making
sectionals my senior year, in
1984. Besides being the bowling
pro shop at Great River Bowl
in Sartell, north of St. Cloud,
where some guy drilled his
very first ball for a customer
during the Reagan administration.
By the way, it was a
And finally, here’s my
answer to the hot rumor that
has been buzzing around the
‘Plex about where I was in The
Bowling News’ Harlem Shake
video. Might have missed it,
but I’m crouching behind the
closer ball return hood. Turns
out the camera angle blocked
me out. Tried not to get stepped
on by the ‘Last Call’ columnist,
but she gave me a knee to
the back of the head anyway,
claiming I tried to tie her shoe
laces together. So I’ve got that
going for me, which is nice.
Another urban legend officially
debunked.
Next week, a look back
at how the PBA television
contract has evolved since
Roone Arledge needed a lead-in
That’s if I can get a hold of our
I recently bowled in a
scratch tournament and had
the opportunity to watch and
talk with several of our youth
bowlers. I was impressed with
their knowledge of the sport,
their abilities, and their sportsmanship.
I have written many
times about our youth bowlers,
but I am not the only person to
see how great our youth are.
Recently, our Greater
Killeen-Fort Hood USBC
Association manager received
an e-mail that I want to share
with my readers.
“I want to share something
with everyone. As you know
we were at Pepsi and Youth
Leaders tournament this
weekend. Cheryl Newman had
mentioned she had a hard time
getting workers from the local
association for this tournament;
hence she brought quite a few
people with her. As our young
people finished I mentioned
this to them and they offered
help which she refused, as it
was late. However on Sunday
when we were at Youth Leaders,
Ed and his wife Amy, along
with David Fields mentioned
they could use help finishing
up some leftover paperwork
from Saturday and help with
Sunday’s, as they had very little
also. When the word went out
By Don Wright
most of our Youth Leaders and
young people from association
stepped up and helped. Robin
Daugherty who had bowled the
early morning squad stepped
right up to the plate and verified
scores for that squad. As
the next squad started, Samantha
Kriner, Hayley Brooks and
their non- bowling friend Tiana
Grudier, came down to the
office to help as they were staying
to support everyone that
bowled that squad. The girls
organized most of the entries
from the day before and helped
Ed get totals scores completely
in his computer with averages
verified. As the recaps came
in they with Sendura Design
(our exchange student), started
verifying scores. The boys,
James Foulkes, Jordan Garza,
Derek Brooks, Jason Bardales
and Heath Fletcher, came in to
help also as soon as they finished..
These kids, in less than
hour had helped Ed and Amy
Calcote, and David Fields finish
up both squads from Sunday,
verify all entry averages, verify
score totals and file them in
order of total score.
I cannot tell you how
pleased and thankful they
were for the help. David Fields
made the comment he doesn’t
remember the last time he had
that much help in a tournament
office at one time. He also
said it was so rare to see people
he didn’t have to train on how
to verify scores even with
the moving of lanes between
their six games. They were
impressed with our Youth, and
I for one was very proud of
them. I know Suzie, you tell us
Rash failed to strike in the
10th, Norton only needed seven
pins in his 10th frame and the
California left-hander threw
three strikes to seal the victory.
“I knew Earl Anthony
when I was a kid. My mother
(women’s professional hall of
famer Virginia Norton) bowled
on tour at about the same time,
so I got to know him,” Norton
said. “To win the tournament
named in his honor is really
special.
“I thought it was a lot to
get one title in a year, let alone
two,” Norton added. “I don’t
even have the words. I knew
I was throwing the ball well.
I knew I was in a good place
mentally. Last year I knew
what it took to win, but this
year, I just decided I’m out
here because I love to bowl
and compete, and for no other
reason.”
Norton was frustrated that
he was unable to put the match
away early, given opportunities
by Rash, but he said he has
new-found confidence that he
can ultimately get the job done.
“Every time (Rash) gave me
an opening, I couldn’t close the
door,” he said, “but I have a
little more determination now
than I’ve had in the past. Every
time I’m on that big stage, I
know what I need to do.”
board near the back of the
approach and look only at the
10th board at the arrows (the
2nd arrow), you will feel that
the 2nd arrow intersects your
body on your clavicle. Yes, I
know the line from the 2nd
arrow doesn’t really do this.
We’re talking here about how it
feels, not how it really is. If you
look at that same 10th board at
the foul line, it will look like
it’s a little further out toward
your shoulder. If you look at
the 10th board beside where
you are standing, you’ll see it
is either outside your shoulder
or right in line with your
shoulder depending on whether
or not you are a interior lineman
for the Cowboys.
This is a physical phenomenon
called vanishing point;
that is, parallel lines appearing
to converge. For a bowler, this
means the farther down lane
you look, the more toward the
center of your body the target
appears. So, if you imagine a
ball path that goes through
the arrows out to a breakpoint
and into the pocket, you will
commonly miss that down lane
target to the inside. If, however,
you imagine a shot that goes
through the arrows, through
the breakpoint, and continues
on a straight line through the
deck, you are much less likely
to miss.
If you have trouble playing
a deep inside shot or any shot
really, this could help you.
Imagine your solid line going
through your target area,
through the breakpoint, and
into the pins or the ditch or the
next lane, whatever your angle
may be. From the breakpoint
to the pins is a dotted line, not
a solid line. The lane will take
the ball on the dotted line. You
don’t have to do that. Your
only job is to send the ball
on the solid line between the
arrows and the breakpoint. It’s
absolutely one of the best ways
I know to stop pulling one and
sending the next one out into
the weeds.
WEBER WINS TOC
accomplished. He also owns
a PBA Touring Players Championship
for his other major.
His win Sunday was his 37th,
tying him for third place on
the PBA all-time titles list with
Norm Duke, behind Walter Ray
Williams Jr. (47) and Anthony
(43).
“I don’t know what it is,”
Weber said. “I get up for the
majors, but there’s one eluding
me and the Weber family – the
USBC Masters. I really want
that one, and I’m not done yet.
I’m not slowing down. I have
no plans to retire.”
Weber won Sunday with
three doubles, four spares and
help from Belmonte, who left
the 4-10 split three times – failing
to convert it twice.
“I woke up today and
said my dream would be to
bowl Pete and win by a pin,”
Belmonte said. “I got half of it
right. I bowled Pete, but I lost
by 60.
“Pete is the most talented
bowler the world has ever seen,
and may ever see,” Belmonte
added. “To bowl him in the
finals and see him break
records like he has broken is
really special. If I could achieve
half of what he has done by the
time my career is over, I’ll be
ecstatic.”
Belmonte eliminated
defending champion Sean Rash
of Montgomery, Ill., 229-171, in
the semifinal match. Belmonte
started with five strikes while
Rash threw only one strike
in his first six frames. When
Belmonte left the 1-2-4-6-10
in the eighth frame and failed
to convert, he gave Rash a
glimmer of hope, but Rash was
unable to close the gap.
In the second match, Rash
followed a first-frame spare
with five strikes to build a 34pin
lead over Tommy Jones of
Simpsonville, S.C., after Jones
left and failed to convert the
game.
Jones started the stepladder
finals with a 217-189 victory
over Finland’s two-handed
at Maverick Bowling Center with
thundering 269-258-300 = 827
numbers in Monday Nite Trio
Patti Sipes rolled a nice 213-
Terry Dixon and Pat Grogan
solid 279-248-232 = 759 Monday
Blues league production.
Futrell (1,977), Greene (1,953) and Russ
Wilson (1,938). They are the 34th team
in USBC Open Championships history
to eclipse the 10,000 pinfall mark.
“It’s pretty surreal,” Keltner said.
“The numbers seem pretty good right
now, but there’s a lot of bowling left to
go, so I’m not holding out for anything.
I just bowled the best I could, but it
would mean a whole lot if they held
up. It’s very humbling bowling with
this group. They all bowl so awesome.
We have such a good connection. We
all bowled in college together, and it’s
so much more fun to bowl with everybody
and have all 10 of us together.”
Two bowlers shoot 300 at National
Kelly Bonta of Wichita, Kan., and
Verne Heidenreiter of Sheboygan Falls,
Wis., rolled the second and third
perfect games of the 2013 USBC Open
Championships on March 24 and added
their names to an even more elite page
in the tournament record books.
Both bowlers already owned 300s
on the championship lanes and became
the 25th and 26th competitors to
achieve the feat twice.
Bonta’s first taste of perfection at
the Open Championships came at the
followed by games of 248 and 228 for a
Regular Singles-leading 776 series.
Heidenreiter’s first perfect game
came in Knoxville, Tenn., in 2003,
the tournament’s 100th anniversary.
This time, he rattled off 25 consecutive
strikes on the way to games of
215, 300 and 279, nearly joining 2003
Regular Singles champion Ron Bahr
of Topeka, Kan., as the only bowlers
with back-to-back 300s. Heidenreiter, a
49-year-old right-hander, finished with
a 794 series, the highest set in the team
Syl Thiel of Lake City, Minn., and
USBC Hall of Famer Bill Lillard Sr. of
Houston continued their marches toward
and made his 68th tournament
appearance March 20. He is in pursuit
of Bill Doehrman and USBC Hall of
Famer Joe Norris, who each competed
in 71 Open Championships.
Lillard, 85, is the event’s active
pinfall leader and made his 66th
consecutive appearance March 25. The
eight-time eagle winner shot 485 in
team, 478 in doubles and 456 in singles
