Williams Jr. of Ocala, FL, 

won his second United States 

Bowling Congress Masters title 

Feb. 14, defeating top seed 

Chris Barnes of Double Oak, 

TX, 290-217, at the National 

Bowling Stadium. 

The victory was Williams’ 

47th on the Lumber Liquidators 

Professional Bowlers Association 

Tour, extending his record 

for the most in PBA Tour his- 

tory, while also moving him up 

to a tie for second with eight 

career major titles. 

“This is just another little 

feather, it’s just awesome,” said 

Williams, who defeated Barnes, 

268-239, to win the January 

2004 USBC Masters also at the 

National Bowling Stadium. “It’s 

hard to explain it better than 

that. To win any tournament is 

awesome, and the bigger ones 

are even better.” 

Williams is now tied with 

Pete Weber and Mike Aulby 

with eight career major titles, 

but all three players trail USBC 

and PBA Hall of Famer Earl 

Anthony, who won 10 majors 

and 43 total titles. 

“I really don’t envision that 

I can get to 10, but I’m not giving 

up yet,” said Williams, who 

turned 50 in 2009. “I’m going 

to go out there and plug along

Layoffs at the USBC

Early last week the United 

States Bowling Congress, 

newly moved to Arlington, 

and fresh off the grand 

opening of the International 

Bowling Campus made some 

difficult financial decisions. 

They laid-off roughly five 

percent of their workforce. 

“We had to make some 

tough decisions in order to 

balance our budget,” said 

USBC director Stu Upson. 

“This included eliminating 

some positions and 

re-allocating others. The 

move is meant to help build 

up Member Services, Association 

Development and the 

Call Center.” 

When asked how this 

would affect their strategic 

direction, Upson said, “This 

requires us to be more 

focused and efficient in these 

areas and really focus on 

building up the departments 

that are revenue producers.”

It is very clear that no 

business is safe in the current 

economic climate and 

cost-cutting measures will be 

taken by everyone in order to 

stay afloat. 

Bowling needs the USBC 

to be successful and be 

relevant in this tumultuous 

time for the sport, so hopefully 

they are driving in the 

right direction. 

Multiple sources have 

revealed that some of those 

impacted by the layoffs 

were high profile employees 

in their cutting edge 

departments.

Technical Director for the 

USBC was in the group laid 

off Feb. 8. 

“The recent down-sizing 

and elimination of key positions 

and programs leaves me 

very concerned for the future

Thomas has been making 

a nice living out of bowling 

for a long time. Bowling isn’t 

the only job he has ever had, 

however. He is a minister. 

He works primarily with 

young people. He owns a 

masters degree in religious 

education. Thomas feels that 

nothing could be finer than

Jim King, SASBA chief, 

is winning his battle with 

pneumonia. But slowly. 

He was hit hard by the illness 

in early January and was 

hospitalized 11 days. 

Jim is back on the job but is 

still working on regaining his 

strength. 

“It is going to take a while,” 

said King.

Linda Chambers, the Dallas 

bowler who recently captured 

the Texas Senior Queens 

tournament, might not have 

become such a good bowler if 

a back injury had not stopped 

her softball career. 

She played right field and 

second base on one of the 

area’s top softball teams. But 

she gave up the sport after 

undergoing back surgery. 

She started bowling with 

a 99 average but is now up to 

213.

if they weren’t judged by the

This week’s high woman is 

Miki Jo Parish who shot a 792 

series at AMF Showplace Lanes 

Euless. 

Miki Jo is currently attending 

classes TCJC with a focus 

on early education. For the last 

five years she has been the 

Ballard’s full-time nanny. She 

has been there for Alyssa Ballard 

since she was six months 

old. She would like to take this 

experience and schooling and 

work as a director in the day 

care field some day. 

What is your high series? 

This is my high series. My 

previous high was 778. 

How many 300’s have you 

bowled? None. I have shot a 299 

game every year since I have 

been bowling adult leagues. I 

always seem leave the 7 or 10 

pin. 

What ball did you throw? 

Storm Virtual Gravity. I love 

that ball. I throw the ball really 

hard and it still hooks for me. 

Who drills your balls? Brett 

Cooper. He knows my game 

very well. I don’t have to tell 

him anything, he just knows 

how to drill the ball for me. 

What is your all-time 

favorite bowling ball? I can’t say 

that I have one. The Virtual 

Gravity has been my favorite 

since I got it. 

What is your average in the 

Masters league? 208 

What is your all-time high 

average? 212 at Showplace last 

year. 

How long have you been 

bowling? Since I was three 

years old, so 22 years now. My 

family all bowls so they got me 

started. My aunt Kat Lecroy is 

probably the best bowler in our 

family, with David Smith being 

a close second. 

What part of the lane were 

you playing when you shot this 

series? I was playing up 10 like 

I always do. 

Who is your favorite pro 

bowler? Can it be two so that 

I don’t get in trouble? Del 

and Carolyn Ballard are my 

favorites. Del is so knowledgeable. 

He can teach anybody 

anything about the game of 

bowling. Carolyn is not scared 

to compete with men, she is a 

fierce competitor. She is a role 

model for us young ladies. 

Most memorable bowling moment? 

Probably the first time 

I shot 299 at AMF Showplace 

Lanes Euless in Travel League. 

It was my first year bowling 

adult leagues. I left the 10 pin. 

How much do you practice? I 

don’t, I just don’t have time for 

it. I bowl league Monday and 

Thursday and Travel League 

every other Sunday. Then I go 

to school Tuesday and Thursday 

nights also.

Women all over the United 

States are jumping for joy today 

as another year of NFL football 

has ended. 

This year it was the New 

Orleans Saints who became the 

World Champions. 

Although I wish it were 

Dallas you cannot help but feel 

good for the Saints organization 

and the city. After all that 

they have gone through, they 

truly deserve this. 

As for the rest of you 

husbands out there, the 

accumulating list of honey do’s 

are on the refrigerator so it’s 

time to get that toolbox back in 

action and get to work because 

there is only a couple of more 

months before the draft. 

As I am writing this, for 

the first time in DFW history 

we are sitting with about ten 

inches of snow outside the 

window. I have never seen 

more than a couple of inches 

here and I have lived here my 

whole life. However, the streets 

were not frozen so we all had 

to go to work and school. 

I would also like to take a 

moment to speak to those of 

you who have never driven 

on ice before. First you must 

understand that the gas pedal 

means go and the brake means 

stop, but those are not your 

only options.

dogs enjoyed the snow. I think 

Jasmine wants to move to 

Colorado because according to 

my wife(Nikki) she hates Texas 

but maybe wide open spaces 

and snow is what she needs. 

Typically I let them outside 

to do their business and when 

it’s cold they come right back 

in. However, this morning they 

wouldn’t come in for a while. 

They actually wanted to stay 

outside and I was more than 

willing to let them, especially 

after Lexi’s latest issue. 

Apparently Verizon FIOS 

with 100 HD channels is not 

enough for young Lexi. As 

Nikki and I were fixing our 

dinner the channel changed. I 

looked at Nikki and asked why 

she changed it and she said she

didn’t. About that time I looked 

at the TV and it was on a pay 

per view channel and I ran 

around the couch just in time 

to change it so we didn’t get 

charged. 

Lexi was pawing the remote 

and almost cost us $14.99. 

However, I think her favorite 

movie is “Eight Below” starring 

a bunch of huskies in Antarctica. 

She likes to snuggle with 

the TV when that movie is on. 

I have a question for you. 

Am I a bad American if I have 

not one ounce of interest in 

the Olympics? I must admit 

part of my irritation is that 

skateboarding on snow is an 

Olympic sport yet bowling still 

isn’t. 

How can the number one 

participation sport in the world 

not be in the Olympics? Also 

I believe that my interest was 

shattered when they started 

letting professionals partake 

in the games. I mean these 

people make millions of dollars 

doing their sport full time. It 

takes away from the feel good 

story of the person who gave it 

all their heart and will never 

make a dime off of it in the 

real world. 

This week’s what’s on 

Daceman’s DVR is the television 

show “Lost”. For a few 

years now I have been watching 

“Lost”, as I am sure many 

of you have as well. 

I really hope that this show 

does not reveal your intelligence 

level because if it does 

then I am a complete idiot. I 

am so confused with what is 

going on it’s not even funny. 

I have rarely ever bailed on a 

television show that I enjoyed 

that much, but I am pondering 

it with this one. 

They have travelled back 

in time and switched around 

so much that I can’t keep up. 

Currently they seem to be playing 

two versions of their lives 

simultaneously. One side is if 

the plane never crashed and 

the other is current time on 

the island. Whatever happened 

to good ole fashion American 

mindless television that I so 

enjoy?

Scheid, bowling industry 

veteran and leader, will retire 

as of April 2010 after nearly 19 

years as president of Ebonite 

International, announced 

Steven Tuttleman, Chairman 

of the Board. Randy Schickert, 

formerly an executive with 

Regal Ware Worldwide, Huffy 

Sports Company, and DESA 

Indoor/Outdoor Products has 

been named Chief Executive 

Officer.

BWAA names Mohr, 

Romeo as Senior 

Bowlers of Year 

Bowling Writers Association 

of America (BWAA) President 

Jackie Wyckoff announced that 

Ron Mohr, Eagle River, AK, 

and Robin Romeo, Newhall, 

CA, have been elected as 2009 

BWAA Senior Bowlers of the 

Year. 

Mohr, 53, captured three 

PBA Senior titles and had the 

high average for the season 

with 223.14. He cashed in 

all 12 PBA Senior events and 

was second in earnings, $250 

behind Wayne Webb, Sacramento, 

CA. 

Mohr was a runaway 

winner with 361 votes in the 

balloting. Webb was runner-up 

with 187. Also receiving votes 

were Mark Williams, Beaumont, 

TX, (62), Dale Traber, 

Cedarburg, WI, (50), and Harry 

Sullins, Chesterfield Twp, MI. 

(15). 

Robin Romeo, 52, easily 

won the female Senior Bowler 

of the Year honors with her 

dazzling performance in the 

USBC Women’s Championships 

in Reno. Romeo won All-Events 

with a near-record 2172 which 

included an 805 in team event. 

She also finished fourth in 

doubles. She was 33rd in the 

regular USBC Queens and was 

second in the Golden Ladies, 

losing in the final match to her 

former tour roommate, Jeanne 

Naccarato, Tacoma, WA. 

“I thought it was pretty neat 

when I found out I was on 

the ballot,” said Romeo, “and 

to win is exciting to me. The 

competition is still strong and 

to be able to perform after 50 is 

humbling to me.” 

Romeo received a similar 

number of votes to Mohr as 

Senior Bowler of the Year 

with a total of 330. Naccarato 

garnered 105 votes, followed 

closely by Dana Miller-Mackie, 

Albuquerque, NM, with 101.

Candidates for BWAA Senior

Thomas is not a member of 

a staff right now, but teaches 

Sunday school. 

He was a PBA player for 

almost three years in the 

mid-80s. 

“Like now,” he said, “the 

money was down. You needed 

sponsors.” 

His sponsors were not as 

strong as he thought and it did 

not work out. 

The amateur route was 

better for him. 

In one three-week period he 

cleared $60,000. 

On one strike in a shootout 

in Vegas, he won $31,000. And 

he won a consolation event 

good for another $30,000. 

Thomas hopes to have some 

more huge paydays coming up 

now that he is a senior. 

He is ready, willing and 

very able.

play golf to relax from bowling, 

which also can be an aggravating 

game. 

…Do Bahrain, Brunei, 

Cyprus, Jersey, Kuwait, Malta, 

Mauritus, Myanmar, Yemen 

and Wales ring a bell? They 

are among the more than 120 

country bowling federations 

that regularly bowl in FIQ and 

other international bowling 

competitions. 

…Never thought I’d see the 

day when bowling balls came 

in more different colors than 

Easter eggs. 

…The charter members of 

the ABC Hall of Fame were

Eagles Sweep Shoemaker 

The Ellison Eagles took out 

their frustration from their loss 

last week to Cove by shutting 

out the Shoemaker Grey Wolves 

17-0 Feb. 9 to lead the Eagles. 

In the team games, Ellison averaged 

213 for the sweep. The 

Grey Wolves, led by Michael 

Dunem and Jared Bourgeois, 

bowled well, but could not 

keep up with the high-flying 

Eagles. Ellison raised their 

district record to 5-3 and sealed 

a spot in the regional tournament. 

Shoemaker fell to 2-6. 

The Lady Eagles raised 

their record to 7-1 with a 

13-4 victory over the Lady 

Grey Wolves. Devin Revels led 

Ellison with a 216 average, but 

Brittany Evans and Cindy Gill 

were also over 190. Jerica Horn 

fired a 207, her first-ever 200 

game. The Lady Eagles led 5-2 

after match play, then put the 

match away by averaging 187

Format: Bowl 6 games across 12 lanes. Top Eight will move on to a bracket bowling best 

2-out-3 matches. This will continue until we have a winner.

just this past October we had 

11 people in the department. 

Now we have seven. It’s just

is the hardest part to take. 

During the USBC Open House 

I was very excited by what I 

saw in the Training Center and 

the direction their coaching 

department was headed. I was 

anxious to see the vision of 

Bowling’s governing body, and 

see ways that they could help 

redefine the sport. 

Local PBA Hall of Famer Del 

Ballard who was the International 

Relations Coaching 

Specialist also had his job at 

the USBC eliminated last week. 

“I am deeply saddened by 

the decrease in USBC memberships 

from a high of seven million 

to the current 2.1 million 

members. Obviously I was a 

casualty of that decrease. I am 

more concerned about the loss 

of my job, but overall it is of 

utmost importance to solve the 

problem with the decreasing 

membership,” Ballard said. 

Even though Steve and 

Del’s jobs were impacted, their 

passion for the sport of bowling 

continues to shine through. 

I now hope that the USBC 

will still have focus on those 

areas. The sport of bowling 

requires it.

shot 255 the last game. I wasn’t 

thinking about shooting 800. 

The more I think about things 

the worse I will bowl, so I just 

tried to get up there and make 

good shots. 

Miki Jo’s tip of the week: My 

tip is to not over think it. It 

seems to me that when you do 

that you will end up putting 

to much pressure on yourself

really don’t get to practice very 

much because I work 12 hour 

days. I am a supervisor in the 

welfare dept for the State of 

Texas and work has been really 

hectic the last few years. I have 

had to cut down on the number 

of leagues I bowl. 

Do you have anyone who 

coach’s you? I have been with 

Mark Baumann for over 15 

years. He used to drill balls for 

Wicker, so he helps me with 

my game. Mark can tell me 

exactly what I’m doing wrong.

How awesome that Kelly Kulick 

won. That just shows it’s 

anyone’s sport, it’s who throws 

the ball the best. Good for her.

Kelly Kulick stands 

alone when it comes to 

beating male champions 

I wasn’t amazed at the amount 

of publicity that Kelly Kulick 

received after winning the prestigious 

Tournament of Champions 

Jan. 24 in Las Vegas. 

Over the years, women who 

beat pro male rivals in any sort of 

sporting event have been glamorized, 

sometimes it is deserved and 

sometimes it isn’t. 

I think Kelly Kulick’s amazing 

feat is the greatest female victory 

over male rivals in any sporting 

event and I will attempt to prove 

it by stating facts about Billie Jean 

King, Danica Patrick and Julie 

Krone. 

BILLIE JEAN KING: She was 

a superb tennis player but she 

is best known for beating Bobby 

Riggs in a national TV match in 

the Astrodome back in the early 

1970s. 

Billie Jean was in her prime, 

Bobby Riggs was over-the-hill but 

was a great showman. She didn’t 

beat one of the super stars at the 

time, she beat a super star of a 

previous era. 

By contrast, Kelly Kulick not 

only beat but annihilated the man 

many consider the best bowler 

on the PBA tour for the past fi ve 

years – Chris Barnes – by a 265- 

195 score. 

DANICA PATRICK: Her only victory 

against male auto race drivers 

gained international attention 

because it came in a “good ole 

boys” sport and it never had been 

accomplished before. 

She didn’t achieve the victory 

alone. She had a good car and a 

good pit crew and good communications 

system during the race 

in Japan. 

JULIA KRONE: She is not the 

fi rst woman jockey to beat male 

rivals, but she is the best woman 

jockey in my opinion as a former 

horse race writer. She rode in the 

Kentucky Derby and Breeders Cup

Bowling Feats

and won millions and millions of 

dollars for horse owners. 

But as a trainer once told me, 

the horse wins the race but needs 

the help of skillful a jockey who 

knows how to control the tempo 

of the race based on the information 

given them by the men/women 

who train the thoroughbreds. 

By contrast, Kelly Kulick was 

alone on the lanes and had to be 

both smart and decisive with every 

delivery for 50 games spread over 

four days. 

Let’s compare formats: 

TENNIS: Women players are 

limited to three set matches so 

they are on the court for approximately 

150 minutes, tops in most 

cases. Even to win one of the 

major titles the player only has to 

win seven matches spread over 

two weeks. 

AUTO RACING: In most cases, 

drivers (male and female) are behind 

the wheel of a car for four to 

fi ve hours. This does not include 

24 hour races where maybe two 

or three drivers will take turns 

behind the wheel. 

HORSE RACING: Most races 

take from a little more than a 

minute to a little over two minutes 

to win. 

BOWLING: In a major tournament 

like the Tournament 

of Champions it will require a 

bowler to roll a 15/16 pound 

bowling ball approximately 720 

times during the regulation 48game 

tournament. 

That means working split shifts 

three days in a row – bowling 

eight games (which generally take 

four hours) in the morning and 

eight games at night each day. Before 

each shift most bowlers will 

roll an additional 20 balls during 

the practice session. 

Then to win the title you must 

win at least two games on TV. 

Now lets compare fi elds: 

TENNIS: A major tennis tournament 

will draw all the healthy 

elite players in the world plus 

a few local qualifi ers needed to 

bring the fi eld to 132. 

AUTO RACING: Fewer than 50 

cars will start in most races but 

all the starters must survive time 

trials to decide the starting order 

of the cars. 

HORSE RACING: Most races 

draw 12 or fewer starters but in 

the Kentucky Derby more than 20 

talented colts generally start. 

BOWLING: A few tournaments 

draw more than 450 contestants, 

but the Tournament of Champions 

drew 62 champions – all 

male champions except for Kelly 

Kulick. 

That meant she had to fi nish 

in the top 24 after the 24-game 

qualifying round and then in the 

top four after 24 match games 

where each victory was worth 30 

bonus pins. 

She won 14 games, lost nine 

and tied one while bowling 

against male legends like Pete 

Weber, Walter Ray Williams, Parker 

Bohn and Chris Barnes to name 

a few. 

She qualifi ed second Friday 

night, which earned her one of the 

four spots on the national ESPN 

telecast Sunday afternoon. 

The word spread Saturday that 

Kelly had become only the second 

woman to make a telecast in the 

51-year history of the PBA and her 

presence and the fact the PBA was 

not up against the National Foot-

Can an average Joe beat 

a PBA pro on TV? 

At the age of 7, well before 

the age of being able to handle 

a big bowling ball, I cut my 

head falling against a door in a 

bowling “alley” in Fort Worth 

that required stitches. I was 

playing with my friends. 

At this point in my 

seven-year-old life, I didn’t like 

bowling very much. Mom and 

dad brought me there once or 

twice a week, but it was pretty 

boring, I was too big to be in 

the “day care” facility maintained 

by the bowling center. 

When not forced to sit in the 

bowling pit, I was left to find 

amusement on my own, well 

before the age of any modern 

electronics that would set a 

seven-year-old free. 

In 1959, my family moved to 

Hurst, only a few blocks from 

another bowling “alley” named 

Hurst Bowl. 

In an age before video 

games, an Internet, or color 

televisions, I became “hooked” 

on bowling. There was pinball 

and shuffle board “bowling” 

with pins that popped up 

with every puck thrown, but 

nothing could compare to the 

physical effort and adrenaline 

rush of trying to knock all 

ten down with two big, heavy 

balls. 

I went to work there at 14, 

I think. I was a porter for a 

while. Then I became a “pin 

chaser”, a junior mechanic behind 

the automatic pinsetters, 

the electric powered revolution 

that had changed the face of 

American Ten Pins. These 

were the Brunswick “A’s” and 

I was responsible for cleaning 

the ball return wheels, changing 

filters and responding to 

breakdowns. 

To prepare the wooden 

bowling lanes, I was instructed 

Max Gross 

to first drag the large wick for 

the entire 60 feet from foul line 

to pin deck and back to clean 

the lanes. Then spray the oil on 

each lane with a big “bug can”, 

then perform a final drag of the 

four foot wide wick to spread 

the oil. 

As a perk, I got to bowl for 

10 cents a game. 

I soon got fitted with an 

AMF “Dick Weber 5 Star” 

drilled by Otis Pillow and 

received lessons from a woman 

professional whose name I lost 

long ago. 

Looking back on it now, the 

lessons were superb, she taught 

me bowling fundamentals 

that I’ve used to this day. She 

taught me how to adjust my 

spot on each lane, a premium 

skill in those days before synthetic 

lanes and lane machines. 

I joined an American Junior 

Bowling Congress league that 

bowled at 10 a.m. on Saturday 

mornings at Hurst Bowl. 

Every Saturday morning 

was a full house there. Saturday 

afternoons were spent in 

front of the television watching 

the Professional Bowlers Tour. 

In the early days, I so admired

some of those early days, but I 

remember bowling in a travel 

league in Fort Worth, in the 

ABC Tournament in Oklahoma 

City, and in the Texas State 

tournament in Corpus Christi. 

I also bowled in the Pro-Am for 

the 1978 Quaker State and took 

home a Columbia White Dot. 

At one point, I lived in 

Amarillo and bowled in a 

league at Western Bowl, but in 

1982 took a job in Dallas that 

required extensive travel and 

my bowling came to an abrupt 

end. 

I went to a center every 

once in a while for fun, but my 

skills had dulled and I found 

it frustrating because I knew I 

was a better bowler than that. 

My travel days ended in 

2001, and one day while rummaging 

around in my garage, I 

encountered my bag and shoes, 

and the White Dot was in fine 

shape. 

I threw it in the car and 

took off for Don Carter West. 

That day, I rediscovered one 

of my first loves, knocking 

down pins with a big heavy 

ball, but now the ball wasn’t so 

heavy any more and the lanes 

seemed to steer the ball into 

the pocket. I was back. 

It wasn’t long before I had a 

new resin ball and some new 

Dynothane shoes, and after 

reading up a little, I decided 

that Sport Bowling was for 

me. I figured it gave me a little 

of what we bowled on in the 

70’s, a little more challenge 

than common league lane 

conditions. After all, I wasn’t 

there for my ego of carrying a 

big average; I was there for the 

challenge of the sport. 

I think I carried a 167 

average that first season, but 

wasn’t pleased with my ability 

to score, so I sought out a new 

coach and found USBC Gold 

coach Susie Minshew. 

She was fine with my 

fundamentals, convinced me 

to ditch the “Wristmaster” 

thingy I wore to keep my 

wrist straight, to have my ball 

redrilled for a better fit, and to 

move my hand more under the 

ball for a better roll. 

She made me understand 

the concept of “axis tilt”. Her 

lessons changed my game so 

that with a bit of practice, I 

was competitive again in this 

new era of bowling. 

I’ve been bowling in the 

Sport Bowling league since 

2002 and moved on to the 

challenge of the PBA Experience 

when it was announced a 

couple of years ago. 

I joined SASBA and have 

been bowling in some of their 

tournaments as well as the 

Texas USBC Senior Masters. 

My best finish to date was at 

the 2009 SASBA Firecracker, 

after 16 games of qualifying, 

I missed the cut to match play 

by five pins. 


Thomas Mahaulu, former 

ABC director, dies 

Thomas Mahaulu, an 

American Bowling Congress 

director for nearly two decades 

and later an honorary member 

of the organization, died Jan. 

20 in Hawaii at age 87. He 

had suffered from Alzheimer’s 

disease for several years. 

The retired State of Hawaii 

employee joined the ABC Board 

of Directors in 1983. He represented 

his native state until 

2002 when he became an ABC

there’s not much to say, so just call it a game. 

The Eight and Nine pin, are the two I left out. 

Say what you want, but this is what bowling is all about.

My name was submitted 

a couple of times last fall 

to the USBC as the weekly 

league high series bowler for 

entry into the PBA Experience 

Showdown, a special tournament 

to be held in Arlington in 

April that features the question 

“Can an average Joe beat a PBA 

pro on TV?”. 

Eighteen names were 

randomly selected from this 

national pool and were announced 

during the USBC 

Masters television broadcast. 

A web poll will be conducted 

at www.Bowl.com for those 

most deserving a berth into a 

final six-contestant field. 

In April, these six will 

go to the USBC International 

Training and Research Center 

in Arlington for a six-game 

qualifier, to bowl one game on 

each of the five PBA “animal” 

patterns and one game on 

a championship pattern to 

determine a final television 

contestant. 

The final contestant will 

bowl against the five winners 

of the PBA “Versatility Swing” 

from last fall, including Norm 

Duke (Cheetah), Rhino Page 

(Viper), Bill O’Neill (Chame- 

honorary member. He served 

many years as a director and 

officer in both the Oahu and 

Hilo bowling associtions. He 

also was involved in tournament 

promotions and league 

organization. 

He is survived by a daughter 

and son. Funeral services were 

held Feb. 5 and condolences 

may be sent to his family at

Ebonite SASBA title 

After leading qualifying on 

Saturday, Mark Williams only

Sunday, but managed to outscore 

Doug Hayes for the win

rating (1.7 million viewers). 

On Monday morning, Kelly 

Kulick and bowling got great exposure 

despite the fact that the 

two NFL games together were 

attracting more than 100 million 

viewers and front page newspaper 

coverage. 

The $40,000 championship 

check she won is nothing compared 

to the two-year PBA tour 

exemption she earned by winning 

the Tournament of Champions. 

She said she was on a “mission” 

and in case you missed it she used 

an Ebonite Mission ball throughout 

the tournament, a rarity in a 

long format event. 

This will be the second time 

Kelly became the only woman to 

earn a tour berth for a year. She 

did it in 2006 but had limited success 

in the 20 tournaments. 

For this fantastic one-time win 

over male bowlers to have any real 

lasting impact for Kelly and the 

PBA, she must become a consistent 

fi nalist. 

Even the elite male bowlers 

always admit that in a one-game 

match anybody can win because 

luck can become the deciding 

factor. 

Kelly Kulick won the Tournament 

of Champions title in a grueling 

50-game marathon. 

In my opinion it is the greatest 

victory achievement by a female 

athlete when going up against 

male rivals in any sport. 

Kelly said she won the championship 

match because she was 

bowling against the pins and not 

Chris Barnes and as one woman 

bowler once said: “The pins don’t 

know or care whether a man or 

woman is throwing the ball.” 

But the American public did.

as good as I can, and the year 

that I’m no longer exempt out 

here, that’s when I will have 

had enough.” 

In the title match against 

Barnes, Williams got off to 

a shaky start, going high on 

his first shot, breaking up a 

split and leaving a 7 pin. From 

there, he was perfect, finishing 

with 11 consecutive strikes 

to take home the $50,000 

prize and two-year PBA Tour 

exemption. 

Williams said the turning 

point in the match was when 

Barnes left a 10 pin in the 

fourth frame, but he managed 

to carry a similar shot in the 

fifth frame. 

“Chris left that weak 10 pin 

after a scout came over and 

touched it but didn’t knock it 

over, and then I step up and 

leave a 10 pin but the scout 

comes over and gets it,” Williams 

said. “That helped me get 

a little more comfortable, and 

from that point, every one of 

my strikes was high flush.” 

Looking back on the loss, 

Barnes said he thought he 

threw the ball well, but it was 

the way the lanes broke down 

in practice that had a major 

impact. 

“I lost this one in the 

practice session,” said Barnes, 

who finished second in the 

season’s second major, losing 

to Kelly Kulick, 265-195, in the 

PBA Tournament of Champions 

three weeks ago. “He played 

further right than I anticipated. 

When I broke them down, it 

made the lanes pretty good 

for me, but it had no affect on 

him.” 

When Williams and Barnes 

met for the Masters title in 

2004, the scenario set up the 

same way. Barnes was the top 

seed, while Williams was No. 

“The last two Masters here 

in Reno, I’ve gone undefeated 

in match play, I haven’t lost a 

three-game match, yet I haven’t 

won either tournament,” said 

Barnes, who made it through 

the double-elimination bracket 

unscathed in both events. “TV 

is one of the best things the 

sport has going for it, but it is 

probably the worst thing I have 

going for me personally.” 

To reach the championship 

match, Williams defeated 

No. 3 seed Ryan Ciminelli of 

Buffalo, NY, 258-224. Ciminelli 

advanced with a 246-229 

victory over fourth seed Mike 

Scroggins of Amarillo, in the 

opening match. 

The 2010 USBC Masters 

featured a field of 267 of the 

top professional and amateur 

bowlers in the world, competing 

for an overall prize fund of 

$255,000.

Special achievement awards 

for youth competing in bumper 

bowling leagues and a new 

membership product for high 

school bowlers were recently 

approved by the United States 

Bowling Congress Board of 

Directors. 

Bumper bowling league 

competitors rolling 50, 75 

and 100 games and/or 100, 

150, 200, 250 and 300 series 

are immediately eligible to 

earn Bowlopolis emblems in 

those categories. These awards 

can be earned regardless of 

the bowler’s bumper league 

average and will continue to be 

earned on the same progressive 

merit basis. 

“Since USBC does not 

recognize bumper league averages, 

our youngest members 

were not eligible to earn youth 

awards,” said USBC director of 

Youth Development Brian Graham. 

“This meant the only way 

they could obtain an award 

was through our purchasable 

awards program. 

“To address this disparity 

and provide a consistent youth 

awards benefit to our youngest 

members, we proposed 

to extend the eligibility for 

the Bowlopolis-themed youth 

awards to participants in 

certified bumper bowling 

programs without the average 

requirement.”

Handicap Will Be 100% of 220 – 2 Person Teams 

Youth Bowler age 6 to 18 

There will be 3 Holiday Breaks during this League. 

Each youth bowler will receive a White Dot or 

Maxim Ball drilled and a Compact Bag with the 

completion of the 12 week 

season. 

Each adult will receive the 

ball of their choice at our 

Pro Shop’s cost.
