Her kids were bowling as
And so she was and she
Th e Bowling News
By JIM WOODRUFF
It was indeed a sad day for
bowling recently when Big
Town closed its doors.
It seems that Big Town held
a special spot in many bowlers’
hearts. When you look back at
all the centers’ closures over
the years, you get the feeling
we are getting down to a precious
few.
Here’s hoping we won’t have
more of this in the future.
Anyway, here is a little
question and answer game you
can play to see how much you
know about some of the centers
that have disappeared over the
years:
Question: Where was Town
North located?
Answer: In Richardson
near Spring Valley and North
Central.
Question: What center had a
barber shop:
Answer: Cotton Bowling
Palace, located at the intersection
of Lemmon and Inwood.
Question: An easy one.
Where was Preston Forest
located?
Answer: At the intersection
of Preston and Forest, on the
southwest corner.
Question: What two centers
on Garland Road were destroyed
by fire and water?
Answer: Jack and Jill
burned and water from Duck
Creek wiped out Garland Bowl.
Question: Where was Hart
Bowl located?
Answer: Across Northwest
Highway from Bachman Lake.
The popular center was
owned by Larry Hart who later
gave it away in a drawing.
Question: What happened to
Circle Bowl, located down the
street from Hart Bowl?
Answer: It is now a Mexican
dance hall.
Question: Where was
Expressway Lanes located?
Answer: On Central,
a couple of blocks from
Mockingbird.
Question? Where was
Superior?
Answer: Also on Central,
just south of Fitzhugh.
Question: What was so
unique about El Capitan and
where was it located?
Answer: It was on Henderson,
just off Ross. It was
a converted theater with
eight lanes upstairs and eight
downstairs.
Question? Where was
Lakewood?
Answer: In the Lakewood
Shopping Center near Gaston
and Abrams.
Where was Fiesta and
Blazer?
Answer: Blazer was on
Joe Lopez
This week’s high man is Joe
Lopez with a 277-300-247 for
a 824 series at Rowlett Bowla-Rama.
Joe has two children,
14-year-old Leah, and 10-yearold
Justice. He bowls in two
leagues at Rowlett on Sunday
and Monday nights with his
wife Kerry. He is also a Service
Advisor at the Ford Dealership
in Greenville.
What is your high series? 879
almost 10 years ago at AMF
Showplace Garland. I left a four
pin in the 10th frame of the
third game. I didn’t get nervous
until I noticed that no one else
was bowling in the center, they
were all behind me.
How many 300’s have you
bowled? 17 or 18, not exactly
sure.
What ball did you throw?
Ebonite Game Breaker. I throw
that and the Hot Sauce mostly.
Dino set me up good with
those two balls.
Who drills your balls? Dino
Castillo and Tyson Branagan at
The Bowling Shop. I have been
going to them for a long time.
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? I have been pretty
happy with the Ebonite equipment.
I don’t know if I really
have a favorite.
What is your average in the
Sunday Mixers league? A 225.
What is your all-time high
average? 229, at Don Carter
West (now USA Bowl).
How long have you been
bowling? I started when I was
12, then quit for a while and
have been bowling for 11 years
since.
What part of the lane were
you playing when you shot this
series? I was playing outside,
pretty straight. I don’t hook it
as much as I used to and seems
to be working for me. I have a
much more consistent reaction
playing outside at Rowlett.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? I would have to say
Wes Malott. I have spoken with
him at some regional’s and
he gave me some pretty good
advice. He throws it really
well.
Most memorable bowling
moment? It would have to be
the 879. I have never had a
whole bowling center focus
on me before. It was a special
feeling. I can’t say that I was
disappointed to have left that 4
pin, but it does sting a little bit
that you get so close to a 900
and cant finish it.
How much do you practice? I
really don’t. I guess I have the
Wes Malott theory, I actually
bowl worse the more I practice.
Do you have anyone who
coach’s you? My dad has always
helped me. Danny Kelch and
Dino Castillo, they have all
THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, January 21, 2010 | Page 3
helped me a little bit. Larry
Reynolds helped me too.
Joe’s tip of the week: The
best advice I can give is to
listen to those that have been
there before. Don’t give up and
keep working hard. Don’t let
the game frustrate you just
keep bowling. It took me a
A friend remembered
By Joey Amadeo
On Jan. 19, 2008 the first
annual Leadoff Lady Trio
tournament was held at Tangi
Lanes in Hammond, LA.
The idea for the tournament
was introduced to me by two
lady bowlers who had recently
visited the area.
Vicki Rios and Leisha Murr
came down to bowl in the Two
to Tangi mixed doubles tournament
and instantly created a
bond with many of the bowlers
form the Hammond area.
They asked me to help come
up with an idea for a tournament
that would help bring
together all of the bowlers and
give the ladies a chance to
showcase their talent.
The Leadoff Lady Trio was
2010 Champions, Chris Johnson, left, Heather Jones and Jay
Ashbaugh.
created and the tournament
filled almost instantly after it
was announced. It was only
fitting that one of the ladies
the trio tournament in Vicki’s
honor. It became the Vicki Rios
Memorial Leadoff Lady Trio
Tournament.
Each year in January there
will be a mixed scratch trio
tournament at Tangi Lanes in
Hammond, LA. Bowlers gather
from all across the South to
participate in this tournament.
So far we have had 11 states
represented.
The event starts with a
bowler’s auction, where 10
percent of the total goes toward
a scholarship for junior bowlers
in Vicki’s name. After the
auction, the bowlers compete
in six games of qualifying
with bonus points awarded for
match play wins. The top six
teams advance to the finals,
with the top two seeds receiving
a one round bye.
The championship match
in the first tournament came
down to the 10th frame with
April Ellis, Scott Monteleone
and Shaun Thonn coming out
as the winners.
This years’ event didn’t
fail to exceed the expectations
when the championship match
again came down to the final
bowlers in the 10th frame.
Chris Johnson struck with
his first ball in the 10th frame
to ensure victory for his team,
consisting of Heather Jones and
Jay Ashbaugh. Coming up just
short and finishing second was
the team of Elizabeth Brents,
Tyson Branagan and Shawn
Maldanado.
This tournament is full of
great bowling, but it’s bigger
than bowling. It’s about great
bowlers and great friends coming
together to share in a loved
one’s memory.
April Ellis wrote, “To all of
Memories of Rick
By Mike Lynch
Bowling in the Southwest
lost a friend and a tough
competitor last week when
Rick Talley was found dead
Jan. 14, at his home in Enid,
OK. The loss to me was much
more personal.
Ricky and I met through
bowling when he and I bowled
with what I feel is one of
the toughest teams I’ve ever
bowled on, consisting of
Ronnie Diamond, Ken Urban,
Dee Munsell, Rick and myself.
I can’t begin to tell you how
much fun that was and Ricky
was always keeping us loose.
“Side bets” were just the
norm in those days and Ronnie
was in charge of that. One
night I came in to Showplace
Euless and asked Ricky who we
were betting this week. Ricky’s
response was “everybody”.
Ronnie, our Senior Minister of
side bets had arranged a roundrobin
doubles bet with every
team in the league.
Panicked, I asked Rick how
much money he had on him.
Together we scraped together
$75.28. When I asked him
what do we do now? Rick’s
response” “Pump the bet”. We
did and we won. His famous
light pocket hit where the
seven and five are the last to
fall was the main reason.
Everyone who knew Rick
will have similar stories. Ask
Dee Munsell about Rick joining
him at a craps table in Vegas
wearing his boxer shorts and
Ricky was his big heart. He felt
things. When his friends hurt,
he hurt.
When I lost my 16-year-old
son, Travis, Ricky didn’t find
out about it in time to make it
to the funeral. Ricky called me
and through the tears all he
could say was, “I can’t make
it there in time Mike, please
forgive me.” He felt he was
letting me down. I assured him
Scroggins wins Pepsi Red,
White and Blue Open for
seventh career PBA title
WICHITA, KS — Mike
Scroggins of Amarillo, flirted
with a perfect finish, but
settled for an easy victory in
winning his seventh career
Professional Bowlers Association
Tour title in the Pepsi Red,
White and Blue Open presented
by the United States Bowling
Congress at Northrock Lanes.
Scroggins ruined 42-yearold
rookie Wayne Garber’s
bid for his first PBA Tour
title, 278-229, to conclude the
highest scoring tournament in
PBA history. The finals aired
Sunday on ESPN.
Scroggins, who struggled
in two preliminary matches
leading up to the title contest,
started the championship
match with nine strikes before
leaving a 7 pin on his first shot
in the 10th frame. He made the
spare and left another 7 pin
on his fill ball, but the match
may have been decided before
it even started because the
inexperienced Garber made a
decision that played right into
Scroggins’ hands.
Garber, making his first
television appearance, earned
his berth in the title match by
had tied at 237-237 and threw
matching strikes in the first
roll-off frame. As the highest
ranking survivor in the ESPN
finals, Garber then had the
right to select which pair of
lanes would be used for the
championship match.
Normally, one pair of lanes
is used for all TV matches, but
because of the unusual sixplayer
format used in the Red,
White and Blue Open finals,
two pairs of lanes were in use.
Garber decided to remain on
the right pair of lanes where
he had just defeated Williams,
rather than move to the left
pair of lanes where Scroggins
had left a steady stream of 7
pins in edging Mike Fagan of
Patchogue, NY, 218-197, and
then fellow left-hander Patrick
Allen of Wesley Chapel, FL,
227-215, in his preliminary
matches.
“My biggest mistake was
choosing that pair of lanes,”
Garber said later. “I threw four
practice balls on the left pair
and had no look at all, but if I
could do it over, I’d pick that
pair.”
No left-handers had bowled on
the right pair other than a few
fresh conditions which meant
better odds his ball would
finish hard and carry strikes.
“I was glad to get off the
pair I was on,” Scroggins said.
“The back ends got so tight,
finish, Garber had the tournament
of his life. “I’ve bowled
for local titles, but this was
a lot different,” he confessed.
“I’m ecstatic. If there are nine
clouds, I’m on cloud 15.”
In the other first-round
match, Williams eliminated
Michael Machuga of Erie, PA,
257-244, in his PBA-record
171st television appearance.
The Pepsi Red, White and
Blue Open presented by the
USBC was conducted on three
different lane conditioning
patterns the USBC plans to
introduce on an optional basis
to American league bowlers in
cooperation with the Bowling
Proprietors’ Association of
America for the 2010-11 winter
league season.
Similar in concept to golf’s
tee system, the USBC Red condition
was the most forgiving
pattern, the White condition
was a medium challenge and
the Blue pattern – which was
used for the ESPN finals – was
the most challenging.
The finalists received:
Scroggins, $25,000; Garber,
$13,000; Williams Jr., and
Allen, $8,000 each; Machuga
and Fagan, $5,500 each.
PIN POINTS
TO PONDER
By CHUCK PEZZANO
Many a parent worries
when a youngster becomes too
interested in sport, any sport.
They feel that at times a
sport can have a distracting
influence on youthful participants
when he or she should
be concentrating more on the
basics of education.
If the sport is bowling,
there’s little need for concern.
Bowling enthusiasts must
learn scoring and the math
necessary. The numbers always
need close attention and when
a youngster becomes involved
with averages, high games,
high series, point systems
and the many other statistics
connected with bowling, they
learn to figure quickly and
accurately, just to keep things
honest. They also are exposed
to various computer systems.
They want to be able to
decipher entry blanks, rule
books, to understand them, to
read accounts of leagues and
tournaments and the exploits of
their bowling heroes in newspapers,
bowling publications
and magazines. Whether they
know it or not, they read more,
become better readers and
more acquainted with words.
They learn how to win,
to lose, to organize, and how
important team efforts are and
how it is just as important to
foster individual goals and they
learn about pressure without
undue pressure on them.
Boys and girls interested
in bowling can’t bowl all they
want because most allowances
won’t stretch that far. Many
become a little more eager to
do some extra chores around
the house to earn some extra
money to bowl some extra
games. Some take on a parttime
job and some pick up
pin money by keeping score
or helping at various bowling
tournaments. They learn more
of the value of money when
they want that new ball or bag
or shoes.
Youngsters interested in
bowling can’t help but have
their competitive juices and
spirit aroused. And if they’re
not good bowlers they can
become involved with the organizational
structure, creating
and conducting and publicizing
events. In all ways the sport
offers a social outlet and an
education, because bowling is
a mirror of life’s success and
failure, and youngsters can
relate much of what they do in
bowling to other experiences.
Few young bowlers get
into trouble, a tribute to the
juniors who bowl, the people
who teach and guide them and
the bowling centers in which
they bowl. Ask any judge.
Most bowling centers welcome
juniors with open arms, but
don’t baby them, and insist
upon proper dress and actions.
Young people learn about rules,
respect for other people’s property
and also about discipline.
But even more should and
could be done to attract and
keep more young bowlers.
One of the great beauties
of bowling for youngsters is
that it will always be there.
Some bowl the rest of their
lives. Many go through gaps,
absences from bowling because
of schooling, jobs, marriage
or family obligations. But
most come back at one time or
another, the fun and lessons
they learned in bowling taken
out of storage.
Books and bowling do get
together. Math, history, finance,
competition, satisfaction
and an atmosphere answering
a social need with a physical
outlet are combined.
Mothers and fathers always
will worry. Those fears are cut
to a minimum when boys and
girls from tots to teens discover
bowling as an outlet.
And you never have to look
very far to find a bowling
center.
Carter and Chris Lucas who
beat Blain Weninger and Richie
Rylant, 404-390. Carter and
Lucas then faced the eventual
champs and lost a one-sided
affair 484-367.
Fleming and Johnson then
beat Rick Lawrence and Casey
Powell, 450-351, to reach the
championship match.
“Harper commented to us
that he did not move in fast
enough in the final match and
that was key,” Fleming added.
The tournament condition
was a variation of the new
“Blue” USBC oil pattern, and
by the end of the tournament
all of the players were playing
inside the sixth arrow.
Johnson had this to say,
“The last pair hooked 10
boards more than the other
pairs we bowled on. I hate to
say it but once we got going, I
knew we would be very tough
to beat. With the way Flem
bowled all day I knew we were
good.”
CJ has always been one of
the strongest players around
from that deep inside line, so
the finals conditions certainly
played into his hands and allowed
him to “make the Tahoe”
payment as he said, with the
$2,700 the winners split for
first place.
Harper and Maldonado
received $1,200 each.
WAXAHACHIE IS
Continued from Page 1
If anyone can kill you with
kindness, it is Sharion. She
stresses customer service. And
always with a smile.
She knows a great percentage
of her bowlers by their first
names.
“Bowlers don’t want to feel
like they are just numbers,”
said Harwell. “They want to be
treated like they are special,
which they are.
“The people in Waxahachie
are just great. They are more
laid back than bowlers in the
city.”
Harwell likes to bowl
leagues in her house, so she
can keep abreast of things. But
she has been battling injuries.
A broken arm made her
attempt to bowl left-handed.
She averaged about 145. In
her heydays, she carried a 197
average.
“That’s when I called myself
a bowler,” she said.
She has bowled most of her
life.
Her whole family, husband
Mack, daughter Sabrina and
son Bubba bowl.
Bubba is the star. Sharion
said he has had some 63
sanctioned 300s.
The Harwells still reside
near Mesquite. She travels 31
miles to work each way. She
says it is worth it.
Waxahachie is her town.
“I could not be happier,” she
said.
by Heather Jones and Anita
Manns.
In the first stepladder
match, Jones and Manns
defeated April Ellis and Olivia
Sandham, 472-463.
They then moved on to bowl
Marcia Kloempken and Tenelle
Milligan in the championship
match and won big, 492-399.
Surprisingly this was the
first time that Jones and Manns
have bowled doubles together
considering they are very good
friends, or “bestie’s” as Manns
put it.
“We communicate very
well when we are bowling, we
share information, and we even
threw the same balls at the
same time today. We started
with the Virtual Energy,
changed to the Tantrum and
whacked them,” Jones added.
Heather averaged 272 in
the finals and the champs
won $700 for the title. while
Kloempken and Milligan
claimed $350 and Ellis and
Sandham received $200.
“I knew that Heather had
a great look so I just needed
to keep it close and we would
do well, we make a great team
and will continue to bowl
together,” Manns said.
The KingPin tournament
had 35 entries and the Queen-
Pin had 11 entries.
Tournament director, Paul
Henderson had this to say, “We
would like to thank everyone
Michigan State coach
named USBC Youth
Volunteer of the Year
Karl Nickolai, who has led
the Michigan State University
bowling program for the last
25 years, has been selected
to receive the USBC Youth
Volunteer of the Year Award by
the USBC Youth Committee.
The prestigious award is
annually presented to an adult
volunteer who has displayed
outstanding efforts to foster,
organize and promote certified
youth bowling programs at
the local, state and/or national
level for the last seven or more
years.
In addition to his work at
Michigan State, Nickolai has
helped to promote collegiate
bowling through his Web site,
CollegeBowling.com. He also
currently serves as president of
the National Collegiate Bowling
Coaches Association (NCBCA),
a position he has held for
nearly 15 years. He has been
with the organization since
1985.
“I have always enjoyed my
work with the MSU Intercollegiate
Bowling Program, the
NCBCA and the CollegeBowling.com
Web site,” Nickolai
said. “I am very honored to
have been nominated and
selected for the USBC Youth
Volunteer Award.”
Nickolai makes a 70-mile
commute from his hometown
of Waterford, MI, to the university
in East Lansing to coach
the Michigan State bowling
team. He conducts tryouts in
addition to taking the team to
tournaments.
He launched CollegeBowling.com
in 1997, when there
were a limited number of Web
sites for bowling teams but not
a site dedicated to the coverage
of collegiate bowling. CollegeBowling.com
has allowed fans
to follow their favorite teams
and sport.
In 1998, Nickolai developed
the Online Team Power
Ranking (OTPR), an objective
point system for ranking all
schools with college bowling
teams based on regular-season
tournament performance. He
credits Joe Ciccone, a former
Arizona State University and
Erie Community College bowler
who is a current PBA member,
with helping to develop a system
that provides a meaningful
team ranking throughout the
season.
He also devised the concept
of a college bowling “average
differential” to measure
athlete performance against an
event field rather than by just
tracking traditional bowling
averages. The average differential
allows athletes to be
fairly compared across different
events with different lane
conditions.
In 1998-1999, he was
selected for the Gordon Teigen
Meritorious Service Award,
presented annually by the
NCBCA to an individual in recognition
of outstanding service
to collegiate bowling, for his
work on CollegeBowling.com.
In 2000-2001, he was the first
recipient of the NCBCA Men’s
Coach of the Year, now known
as the NCBCA Kerm Helmer
Men’s Coach of the Year award.
“Karl’s time spent coaching
and successes, along with his
countless hours and resources
volunteered in non-coaching
situations, make him an excellent
candidate,” wrote Steve
Lawson in his recommendation
of Nickolai.
On the lanes, Nickolai had
an 877 series (299-300-278)
in January 1997, which at the
time was the Greater Detroit
Bowling Association city record
and remains fourth on the
all-time Detroit list. He also
rolled an 827 series in 1996,
which included consecutive
300 games (227-300-300).
Nickolai will be presented
the USBC Youth Volunteer of
the Year Award during the
USBC Convention, April 28-May
1 in Reno, NV. To learn more
How Many Calories Does
My Body Need?
Each and every one of us
has an amount of calories it
takes to run the body at rest.
This is called the RMR or
Resting Metabolic Rate (this is
also known as Basal Metabolic
Rate). One way to estimate
how many calories it takes is
to determine the lean muscle
on an individuals body. We
typically use skin fold tests to
estimate the amount of body
fat a person has and how much
lean tissue a person has.
Let’s say that a person
weighs in at 200 pounds and
he has 12 percent bodyfat
determined by skin folds you
take 200 x 12 percent = 176.
So this person has 176 pounds
of lean tissue and 24 pounds
of fat tissue. The lean tissue is
metabolically active and the
fat tissue is not. Therefore,
we can take 176 x 10 = 1760
and determine that this is the
estimated amount of calories
he burns at rest.
Now the next step is to
determine the activity and lifestyle
factor. Then we will take
the RMR and multiply it by the
factor which we determine by
the chart below.
Extremely Active: Work a
physical job, construction, mail
carrier, builder, landscaper and
work out hard five or more
times each week.
Very Active: Either work a
physical job and exercise three
times a week or work a desk
job and work out hard five
times a week.
Moderately Active: Desk
Job and work out three or four
times a week or a physical job
and do not exercise.
Non Active: Neither exercises
nor works a physical job.
For Extremely Active
— RMR x 1 + RMR = Total
Calories Needed
For Very Active — RMR x
.7 + RMR = Total Calories
Needed
Moderately Active — RMR
x .4 + RMR= Total Calories
Needed
For Non-Active — RMR x
.2 + RMR= Total Calories
Now there are other formula’s
to figure the total caloric
count needed on a daily basis,
but the above formula is very
accurate, and in my 20 years of
experience comes pretty close
to right on.
Once the caloric need for
the day is calculated you can
determine if it’s correct by
eating this many calories for a
week and you should maintain
your current body weight.
Any weight loss would
mean that a caloric deficit was
created and one may increase
calories accordingly.
Likewise if there is any
weight gain, then a caloric
surplus is indicated and the
calories may need to be
adjusted downward.
Typically it is better to give
it 10 to 14 days to see how the
body responds because often
times water weight fluctuations
occur and this allows for these.
This is the ideal way to start
a nutritional regimen because
you have determined how
much the body is burning at
the current time. When you
determine this you can make
adjustments as needed.
It is important to notice that
the more muscle one has the
more calories expended.
This is why it is so important
to use resistance exercise
programs to build muscle.
This does not happen with
aerobic activity. Some aerobic
activity is good but one should
do the least amount needed
to keep the heart and lungs
healthy and to burn a few
calories when needed.
Remember these tips to
successful fat loss: 1. Make
eating the right foods with the
right amount of calories the
first priority; 2. Do resistance
training at pretty high intensity
levels at least three times a
week; 3. Do just enough cardio
to keep the heart healthy and
to burn some calories.
I must admit that I am a
little disturbed at the latest
trend in college football.
The idea that you can take
a job that affects thousands of
people, and simply quit and
take the exact same job at
another school is beyond me.
The group of coaches including
Bobby Petrino, Les Miles,
Nick Saban, Rich Rodriquez,
and now Lane Kiffin, seem to
think that contracts and commitments
do not matter. They
walk into a kid’s home and tell
his parents how they will take
care of their child and watch
over him to make sure they
get a good education. The next
thing you know another school
calls and wants to hire him
and he takeoff without as much
as an apology.
You can also throw in the
coach that breaks the rules
and while the school is being
investigated he gets the heck
out of dodge. He moves on to
another big paycheck (yes that
means you Pete Carroll), and
the school is left to deal with
the consequences.
Since the NCAA doesn’t
care what the fans of college
football want, (a playoff
system) they should be at least
interested in the stability in
collegiate programs.
I think they should insert
some rules on job hopping in
the NCAA. The first rule would
be that you must actually
fulfill your contract (what an
idea huh?).
If you are the one to break
the contract you are not allowed
to take another coaching
job in the NCAA for at least
three years.
If you are fired then you
must sit out at least one year
before you can take another
job.
Now I am not saying you
cannot improve yourself, as I
have no problem with promotions.
If you’re an offensive
coordinator and you can get a
head coaching job by all means
take it.
But Lane Kiffin makes college
football and the University
of Tennessee look like complete
morons. He signs a contract
with Tennessee and coaches
the team for a year.
Then when Pete Carroll
quits at USC he decides to quit
Tennessee and head to USC.
His commitment to Tennessee
was actually a lie and yet he
is rewarded with another fat
paycheck.
He loses nothing while the
kids at Tennessee must start
all over with a new coach. It’s
not fair to the kids and I would
like to see it changed.
I went back to review Dacestronamous’
top five predictions
for the 2009-2010 NFL football
season. After reviewing these
predictions I do not think that
Dacestronamous will be going
to Las Vegas anytime soon.
Although I was correct (just
barely) with the Detroit Lions
winning a game and not getting
the first pick in the draft,
I missed on every single one of
the other predictions.
We never saw Pacman
Jones. Brett Favre did indeed
start all 16 games. Michael
Vick did play, but never
started, and Tony Romo and
the Dallas Cowboys were able
to win a playoff game.
So I look at it this way, I am
100 percent right 20 percent of
the time.
This week I was asked
to provide an update on my
training for the half marathon
next month.
To my disappointment (only
on the outside, inside I am
jumping for joy) it is not looking
like it is going to happen.
I seem to have some major
foot cramping anytime I get
close to two miles and then
I have to stop. I have tried to
fight through it, but the pain
lingers for days if I do.
So I am going to have to
try yet another pair of new
running shoes, or try some
different running styles to
eliminate the pain.
So no marathon for me this
time. I will keep you posted on
my next adventure.
This week I am going to
substitute the section “what’s
in Daceman’s DVD” for “what’s
in Daceman’s DVR”.
I have started watching a
new show on Spike TV called
Blue Mountain State. This show
is like a mix between Varsity
Blues and American Pie.
The setting is a prominent
college football team that has
some unique characters on
it that do some crazy college
things.
For instance one of the main
characters on the show is the
backup quarterback who has
no desire to be anything other
“We’re thrilled to join
the BPAA, a true leader and
innovator in the bowling
industry. The steady growth in
bowler participation throughout
North America – a 4.5
percent increase in the past
year alone – is a testament to
the impact that the BPAA has
made through its investment in
bowler and proprietor development
products and services,”
said Gary O’Neill, chairman
of the ABPA. “This agreement
enables the ABPA to offer our
member centers an incredible
range of new offerings that will
enhance the growth of their
businesses.”
Through the partnership
agreement, the ABPA’s members
– more than 100 bowling
centers across Australia – will
now reap the membership
benefits provided by the BPAA.
The ABPA’s members will be
entitled to take full advantage
of programs that include:
Marketing tools such as
the Bowlopolis brand youth
development program
Management, education
and training programs including
“Bowling University”
(online accreditation) and
“Coach it Up” (casual bowler
“This historic agreement
between the BPAA and ABPA
marks an exciting milestone
for the bowling industry, while
creating a host of new business
and consumer opportunities
for ABPA members,” said
Jim Sturm, president of the
BPAA and a director of the
United States Bowling Congress
(USBC).
“Now is a very exciting time
for bowling. From the Atlantic
Ocean to the Pacific Ocean,
we’re seeing growth across the
map in consumer participation
NFL Super Bowl(ing)
for charity
MIAMI, FL, — For the
fifth year in a row, more than
30 NFL legends will hit the
lanes at the NFL Super Bowl
Celebrity Bowling Classic,
presented by NFL Charities
and Strike Ten Entertainment
(STE), the marketing arm of
the bowling industry. Super
Bowl legend, MVP of Super
Bowl X and “dual-sport” Hall
of Famer (both football and
bowling), Lynn Swann, will
return for a third straight year
to serve as event host. This
year’s event, which is open
to the public, will be held at
7p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4 at
SpareZ Lanes, located in Davie,
FL, just minutes from Dolphin
Stadium, the site of Super Bowl
XLIV.
“I’m excited and honored
to once again host a great
Super Bowl tradition, the NFL
Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling
Classic,” Swann said. “I’m also
feeling good about my bowling
team’s chances of winning this
year’s tournament trophy, the
third time will be the charm
in 2010,” said Swann. “What is
particularly special about this
event is that players and fans
of all bowling skill levels get to
play together, side-by-side, all
in the name of a great cause.”
Proceeds from the tournament
will help fund the NFL’s
Youth Education Town (YET)
initiative in South Florida. NFL
Youth Education Towns (YETs)
are education and recreation
centers constructed in Super
Bowl host cities that serve as
a lasting legacy of each game.
With each Super Bowl, the NFL
donates $1 million towards
YET development in an underserved
area of that city. Presently,
there are 15 YETs in 12
cities across the United States.
As its legacy to the cities that
host Super Bowls, the NFL
establishes these learning and
recreational centers.
Prior to the Celebrity Bowling
Classic, the NFL greats will
team with professional bowlers
to lead a private bowling
clinic for local South Florida
elementary school children on
Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 11
a.m.–1 p.m., also to be held at
SpareZ
Lanes (private clinic will be
open to the media only).
“In addition to being an
exceptionally fun time for our
participants, this event helps
to promote a wonderful cause
and make a real difference,
positively impacting the lives
of thousands of local kids in
the Super Bowl’s host city,” said
Jim Sturm, president of STE
and the Bowling Proprietors’
Association of America (BPAA).
“We’re so pleased to again, for
a fifth straight year, have bowling
be included as a premier
event at the Super Bowl.
The continued success and
popularity of the NFL Super
Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic
speaks to both the surging
popularity of our sport and the
tremendous fundraising power
of bowling.”
“Bowling and Lynn Swann
have been great friends and
partners to NFL Charities with
this annual tournament, which
has become a fixture at the Super
Bowl and one of our most
interactive fan and NFL player
experiences,” said Tournament
director, Nick Nicolosi. “We
have an incredible line-up of
former NFL greats playing in
this year’s tournament, providing
a rare opportunity for
football lovers to get to know
some of their favorite players
while playing one of the best
games in the world.”
Legendary NFL stars and
Pro Football Hall of Fame
members confirmed to participate
in the Celebrity Bowling
Classic include (subject to
change): Hank Bauer, Marlin
SPOTLIGHT
Continued from Page 3
Super Bowl.
We last heard from Lisa in
September and I mentioned
then that it would not be the
last time she was high for the
week…and it wasn’t.
Lisa is the office manager
for Advanced Integration
Technologies. They are an
Aerospace Engineering firm
and she has been there for 14
years. She is also a mother to
four boys, Scott 25, Brian 23,
Gregg 19, Peter 18, and the wife
to local striking legend Tam
Wasson.
What ball did you throw?
The Mutant Cell, it is the
newest ball I have. It was a
Christmas present from my
husband Tam.
What is your all-time
favorite bowling ball? I have
liked everything that has come
out. I don’t know that I have
a favorite ball, but Ebonite is
my favorite ball company of all
time.
How much do you practice?
I have been actually been
practicing more since I have
been changing my pitches. I
have been going and practicing
once or twice a week. Last year
in the Bluebonnet Queens I
tore my thumb up really bad.
So I have been talking to lots
of people about what I could
do. Dino Castillo came up
with the most logical idea, as
I am getting older I have lost
flexibility in my thumb so he
recommended that I quit using
reverse and start using some
forward pitch in the thumb.
So for right now I have gone
to zero pitch in my thumb
and I think I am getting much
closer, I am ready to go bowl a
tournament.
Do you have anyone who
coach’s you? I don’t really have
a coach, My game is pretty
unique. Tam knows my game
better than anyone else in the
world and he is my number
one go to guy. If I ask politely
he will help me.
How many leagues do you
bowl? I bowl in three counting
TCBA Travel League. For the
last few years we have bowled
the same leagues. We bowl
a league in Sherman that is
great fun for us since it is a
ways from the house, they have
wood lanes, so it is a different
look than the synthetic lanes
around town.
How long do you plan to
keep bowling? As long as it
still fun. I don’t want to bowl
when it hurts, so it is important
to get my thumb under
control. I would still watch
and be involved in bowling,
but it is important for me to be
competitive. Probably 30 or 40
more years, ha-ha. I am still
looking forward to bowling a
SASBA event soon.
Where did you take your best
vacation? I would have to say
when Tam, I and the four boys
and we to Florida and Disney
World. It was so great to see
the coast, The Keys, and of
course seeing the boy’s faces at
Disney World, good memories.
If you were the commissioner
of all things bowling for a day
what would you change? I
think I would want to change
the perception of what people
think handicap is. I don’t
think people understand what
it is for, what it is, and how
it should be used. When I
coached in college, I spent
a lot of time on that, but I
don’t think most people get it.
Handicap is used to even the
playing field, it should not be
used to allow the lower average
