Lee spends a
lifetime bowling
By Kayla Endicott, Staff Writer
Born in Charleston, South
Carolina, Susan Lee grew up in
a military family with her two
younger siblings. After moving
around all her life, she landed
in El Paso, Texas in 1968. In
1975, during her senior year
in high school, she met her
husband to-be in the bowling
alley. In her career field, Susan
was involved in banking for 21
years. She now has 3 children
and 6 grandchildren. She
moved to the Dallas area in
2001 when her first grandchild
was born.
Susan was introduced into
bowling by her parents who
were both bowlers. She is the
only one of her siblings who
still bowls, but for her, it is
a big part of her life. Susan
began bowling at Bowlero
Lanes in El Paso, however the
center shut down last year after
Susan Lee
being in operation for several
decades. Like most bowlers,
she started out in the Bantam
Prep league and worked her
way up into the Senior league.
Bowling is important to Susan
because it’s her social time
Bowling industry unites to host Men's
and Women's Bowling's U.S. Open
Four Leading Entities in Bowling Join Forces to Host Men’s and
Women’s Events Side-By-Side
ARLINGTON, TX - October
25, 2012 - In an unprecedented
showing of industry solidarity,
the four leading entities of the
bowling industry have come
together today to introduce
Bowling's U.S. Open. Hosted
in the great bowling city of
Columbus, OH from July 21
to July 27, the entire bowling
industry will be facilitating the
Men's and Women's competitions
side-by-side. For the
first time, competition will be
conducted in three different
bowling centers: Wayne Webb's
Columbus Bowl, Game of
Western Columbus and Holiday
Lanes.
One of the most powerful
brands in sports, the U.S.
Open, will be have a live two
hour event telecast on ESPN
Saturday, July 27 at noon EDT
from Webb's Columbus Bowl
where bowling will crown its
Men's and Women's U.S. Open
champion. ESPN has been telecasting
the Open since 1997.
"This unprecedented level
of collaboration within the
industry will result in an un-
rivaled experience for bowlers,
partners and fans," said PBA
CEO Geoff Reiss. "Bringing
these two major championship
events together speaks not only
to the solidarity of the industry,
but to the power of the U.S.
Open as a brand."
The unifying creation
of Bowling's U.S. Open was
possible through collaboration
between the four leading
organizations in bowling: the
United States Bowling Congress
(USBC), the Bowling Proprietors'
Association of America
(BPAA), the Professional
Bowlers Association (PBA) and
Strike Ten Entertainment (STE).
"Bringing the best bowlers
in the world together in a great
host city will create a fantastic
opportunity to showcase the
highest level of competition
for our sport," said Stu Upson,
executive director of the USBC.
"We look forward to spotlighting
how major bowling
events create media exposure,
build civic pride and drive a
significant economic impact for
Anne Marie Duggan wins
2012 USBC Senior Queens
ARLINGTON — United
States Bowling Congress Hall of
Famer Anne Marie Duggan of
Edmond, Okla., defeated fellow
hall of famer Dana Miller-
Mackie of Albuquerque, N.M.,
on Tuesday to win the 2012
USBC Senior Queens presented
by Storm.
Duggan, who turned 50 last
month, defeated Miller-Mackie,
199-173, at the International
Training and Research Center
to claim the title. The event
featured a field of 56 of the top
senior women bowlers in the
country.
In the title match, Duggan
jumped out to a quick start,
striking on five of her first
seven shots and taking more
than a 50-pin lead.
"It was really fun to win
something again," said Duggan,
who won 15 career titles on
the women's professional tour.
"Obviously I don't put the time
into my bowling that I used to,
but to still see that I can throw
it well when I need it, feels
really good."
Duggan, who entered the
stepladder finals as the third
seed, had to win three matches
to take the title. In the semifinal,
she defeated Char Hammel
of Las Vegas, 210-201, after
knocking off fellow hall of
famer Tish Johnson of Colorado
Springs, Colo., 224-198, in the
opening match.
"I really wasn't thinking
about having to win all those
matches," Duggan said. "There
was no use in getting myself
Westbrook passes away
Danny Westbrook
lost his fight to recover
from the devastating
injuries he suffered
last week. He passed
away on Friday
evening.
Westbrook was hit
by a passing car while
assisting a stranded
motorist on Highway
75 in Plano.
At this time the
funeral arraignments
have not been finalized,
but we will post
them on the Bowling Danny, Janelle and Emma Westbrook
News website later this
week. Check www.TheBowlingNews.net for more information.
all worked up, so I just took it
one shot at a time. I made a lot
of really good shots and a lot of
bad shots, but fortunately they
didn't cost me."
Duggan took home $2,400
for the title along with the
Senior Queens tiara, trophy and
pendant.
Just Paying
Attention By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
Here’s more on why Lon
McEachern should do pretty
well transitioning into the
play-by-play spot on ESPN’s
PBA telecasts. The production
company handling the mostly
pre-recorded World Series of
Poker shows is now entering
it’s second season as the PBA’s
production service. From
watching his shows with WSOP
color analyst Norman Chad,
McEachern shows his skills
as a broadcast professional.
He knows when to let Chad
comment about who’s wearing
sunglasses and why they may
not be working today at the
final table (not a good idea to
hide from an opponent one particular
day) as well as showing
a graphic about how many
wore shades to win at the final
table in the Main Event.
Here’s the sign this guy will
show up well prepared. Not
only does McEachern have a
research staff for the WSOP
shows, but he does his own
separate research on the different
aspects of the tournament
as well. Old school? Absolutely.
To last in this business since
well before the start of the
digital era is testament in itself.
Really, it’s how we were taught
to prepare for a broadcast,
whether it be TV or radio. If
well. Who else have you heard
prepares in that manner? No
need to look outside southern
California. It’s none other
than one of faces in sports
broadcasting’s Mt. Rushmore,
Vin Scully. Tony won’t give me
the space to list what he has
done. Just Google him and look
at what he hasn’t done. It’s a
much shorter list.
Let’s get back to McEachern.
He knows the story is on the
screen. Knows when to add
commentary as well as to let
the pictures talk. This was
done more in the earlier days
of television, but today’s directors
insist on either announcer
saying something when it may
not be necessary. A typical
moment of this usually occurs
in a critical spot as a clutch
moment is about to or should
be happening.
I’m going to call this the
21st Century White Noise
Syndrome, a phenomenon
similar to what house disc
jockeys do at dance clubs. It’s
filler music is played between
main songs, making it sound
like it’s a six hour-long song,
rather than having creating a
audio pause between songs.
It’s not bad enough the an-
nouncer is talking, but for the
last 20 years, there are enough
graphics in various corners of
the screen to get the viewer up
to date. I’m not even counting
the ESPN network-fed crawl
at the bottom of the screen.
(Point of information here. The
theory behind all the info on
the screen is the fact seeing our
eyes pick up and disseminate
information faster than our
ears.) If anything, it can be
information overload.
I am anxious to hear how
Lon and Randy are going to
sound together. Hopefully,
what will happen is the two
announcers will go into a
studio and watching a recorded
telecast without sound. They’ll
call the game or event as if
they are actually calling it. A
major advantage is it gives both
announcers a dry run without
sounding really clumsy live
on-the-air. A producer running
the recording can stop it
while the announcers can talk
about what each wants to do
in a given situation. Like the
sports teams they are covering,
announce teams are not that
much different. I guarantee
you Pat Summerall and Tom
Brookshier did this in the 60s
at CBS-TV, then with his later
regular analyst John Madden.
ABC-TV did the same when
replacing Dandy Don Meredith
before the ‘74 Monday Night
Football season. Many people
were brought in to try to fit
between the steady Frank
Gifford and Mr. Speaking of
Sports, Howard Cosell.
And now, the burning question
from last week’s column.
Where did I come up with this
TV stuff? Besides watching
much TV, I’m also a fan. That
led me to majoring and receiving
a four-year degree in broadcasting.
Having been told I had
a face for radio, I stayed with
it for several more years work
odd hours in such wild places
like Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and
St. Cloud, Minnesota before
realizing drilling balls was just
a bit more fun. In the early 90s,
I was asked to be color analyst
for ten PBA Midwest Regional
finals, when the old stepladder
format prevailed. More recently,
I’ve also one of a handful to
be a guest analyst with Mike
J. Laneside on PBA Xtra Frame
and with Matt and Emil on the
USBC’s YouTube Channel for
a USBC Open Championships
team event webcast. The mechanics
of broadcasting haven’t
changed in as much as how
it’s broadcast. Still have sound
levels to adjust, cameras to
white balance, and, of course,
headphone feeds to match the
other announcers (Check that
yet, Matt?). Most of all, my dad
was a newspaper publisher
going back to the mid 60s. Yes,
that would be the Don Draper
days. Speaking of growing up
around it, I remember the Chris
and Bo show when it was the
Chris and Billy show. Guess I
still am a fan.
By Leisha Murr
I’m trying to remember
when my birthday went from
being one of the days I looked
forward to each year, to a day I
dread. I’m probably one of the
few people who think this way,
but to me, my birthday is just
another reminder that I’m not
getting any younger.
As a child I couldn’t wait
for my birthday to roll around
each year because it always
meant presents, cake, and a
party with my friends. It was
my day. I could always do just
about anything I wanted to
do on my birthday and even
pick what we would have for
dinner. As I got older, I even
got to play hooky from school,
sleep in and go shopping on my
birthday.
I couldn’t wait to turn sixteen
so I could get my driver’s
license and a little freedom. I
couldn’t completely come and
go as I pleased, but I didn’t
have to rely on my parents or
my older brother if I needed to
go somewhere. I think the 16th
birthday is the most anticipated
and biggest day in every
teenager’s life besides maybe
high school graduation.
Then I couldn’t wait to turn
eighteen; that would make me
an “adult”. Although nothing
really changed in my life at 18
except that I could vote and get
into clubs with my friends. I
finally got to face forward in
my driver’s license picture but
there was still a big red “under
21” stamp right across the front
so I wasn’t as “adult” as we all
wanted to be.
Finally, my 21st birthday
rolls around and so now I’m of
legal drinking age. Now that
was a birthday to celebrate!
What other birthdays after that
do we have to look forward
to? I guess I was happy to turn
twenty five as well so that I
could rent a car without paying
extra for it. I don’t think I
have wanted to celebrate a
birthday since.
My friends threw me a 30th
birthday party even though I
did NOT want to be turning
30 they wouldn’t let me go
without a party. Several of
you reading this were there
and I appreciate all the love,
friendship, and memories of
that night. They were right,
you HAVE to celebrate a few
milestone birthdays whether
you want to be that age already
or not!
So why do I dread my birthday
and getting older so much?
I guess being single has a lot to
do with it. I don’t have a family
of my own to celebrate with
and another birthday is another
reminder that THE clock is
ticking. I get to buy my own
birthday presents now; except
I did get an amazing gift from
my friends last year, a custom
rather just skip it!
they are probably going to scan
one behind the counter anyway
so why play the game?
I can assure you that if
I don’t get the advertised
discounted price with the card
they are going to have to put
all my stuff back because I will
leave it at the checkout. The
truth is that I have a drawer
full of these cards, but I never
carry them with me which in
my opinion defeats the purpose
of having them.
Fortunately most places
can also look it up by your
phone number which is good
for me since I’ve had the same
number for over ten years, but
for those that change numbers
every time a new cell phone
comes out then you better have
a George Constanza size wallet
for all those cards!
There has been some excitement
around my house this
week as my wife Nikki started
a new job.
She has been in a call center
environment as a supervisor
nearly her entire adult life
despite having a Bachelor’s
degree in HR. She has wanted
to get into HR for a long time
now, but every position she
applied for wanted previous
experience in HR and this
included the entry level ones.
It seemed that they all thought
she was over qualified because
she has a Master’s degree
and had previously been a
supervisor.
Finally she got her break
and started as an HR Administrative
Assistant for a big
natural gas company. I find
it funny because some of the
It’s always
the right time
to sign up for
a League
Call your local center
now to sign up
things she came home bragging
about getting to do are
things that I’ve been doing for
many years and have taken
for granted. She was excited
that they took her to lunch and
actually bought!
I laughed and explained that
big companies often do that.
She was also excited about
the free mini-cooler they gave
her with the company’s logo
on it. She was also excited
because they shut down early
a few times a year and take the
employees to the State Fair or
other fun things. She couldn’t
believe she would still get paid
for it.
Most importantly to her is
that she is no longer on call. I
thought I threw a fit when I got
a call from work after hours,
but she turned into the Tazmanian
Devil when she got a call.
As a matter of fact the only
thing worse than her getting
an afterhours call would be
me booking a hotel that didn’t
have a hair dryer in the room.
Daceman’s DVR is a new show
on ABC on Wednesday nights
called “Nashville” starring Friday
Night Light’s own, Connie
Britton, and former child star
Hayden Panettiere (she was so
cute as an eleven-year-old in
Remember the Titans).
Hayden is all grown up now
and playing the role of a more
adult version of Taylor Swift
who has chosen her nemesis to
be the legendary Rayna James
played by Britton.
The casting was well done,
but I’m having a hard time
with the believability of the
singing in the show. It just
doesn’t seem real, but it’s easy
to tolerate that because the
story lines are still juicy and
entertaining. I hope everyone
will watch it because there is
nothing worse than getting
involved in a show and then
they cancel it. So everyone
tune in please!
Finally, although I didn’t
know him as well as many of
you I wanted to pass along my
condolences to the family and
friends of Danny Westbrook
who passed away last week
as a result of injuries suffered
from being hit by a drunk
driver while helping a stranded
motorist. The fact that Danny
was helping someone in need
tells you all you need to know
about how great of a guy he
was and how badly he will be
missed.
Our 56th Year
The know where you slud
NMW
Although this kind of
sounds like I’m doing my
Dizzy Dean impression, it
really is about paying attention
to where you slud, I mean slid.
Since you lay the ball down
five-to-six boards outside your
sliding ankle and since you
don’t see this as you’re looking
at your target, it’s pretty
important you know where you
slid. That way you can be very
sure of where you laid the ball
down even if you didn’t see it.
You’ll often see the pros
look down at their foot after
a shot. They’re not looking
to see if there’s a message on
their toe. They are looking to
discover several things:
a) If they slid where they
intended and the shot didn’t
work, they need a new
intention;
b) If they didn’t slide where
they intended and the shot
worked, they still need a new
intention;
c) If they didn’t slide where
they intended and the shot
didn’t work, there’s a good
chance that’s why;
d) If they slid where they
intended and shot worked,
good planning, do it again.
In order to know which it
is, you’ve got to know if you
slid where you intended to
slide. This NMW can get very
interesting. For example, a
student and I will be discussing
this concept and the goal
of the next shot will be to get
it done. On their way back to
the settee, a little voice (me)
asks, “Where did you slide?”
What a look I get! “Oh, man. I
forgot to look.” This is not the
onset of any attention disorder.
You didn’t develop ADHD on
the way to foul line, although it
certainly seems that way.
It’s a lapse of concentration,
common and unfortunate.
That’s what I mean when I say
this is an interesting NMW.
Learning to do this is very important
and takes some mental
discipline. You can’t get mad
that you didn’t do what you not
more than two seconds ago told
yourself you would do. Like
anything else you’re learning,
you need some reps. It will be
worth whatever effort it takes.
Knowing that you did what you
intended beats guessing every
time.
It is very common that
people blame themselves when
they miss. Sometimes it’s
appropriate and sometimes it’s
not. “I must have a) juiced it
up a bit, b) had late timing,
c) forgot to turn it, or d) it
doesn’t count because I missed
my mark.” Sometimes you are
the culprit but having a litany
of ills to choose from doesn’t
make any of them right. If
you know where you slid, you
can either eliminate that as an
issue or you’ve found the likely
error right away. Either way,
you’re ahead.
That “missed my mark”
comment is a bit of a pet peeve
of mine. Even if you did miss
your target, you’ve identified a
symptom, not a cause. Why did
you miss it? I understand you
might not know. That’s why
you hire a coach. Anyway, my
issue with it is this: don’t think
the shot doesn’t count because
you missed the target. You do
not have to hit the target for
the shot to give you usable
information.
The important information
is not that you missed your target.
The important information
is why. Recognize you missed
and take whatever information
you can to your next lesson.
Missing your target is not an
excuse. It’s a pain. That’s a
great thing! Pain is a warning,
a help, an alert that something
might be going on, an early
warning system for those who
are paying attention.
BOWLING BUFFS…
West Texas A&M Bowlin’ Buffs are underway to another
successful season. In the month of September we had
57 student/athletes tryout for the team and over a 3
week period, bowling 48 games the teams were ready for
their first tournament. SWIBC I in Albuquerque NM was
held on September 29th along with a Tier II tournament on September 30th, The Duke
City Classic. In both tournaments the WT Bowlin’ Buffs came away with victories over
West Texas A&M University
BOWLING
University of Arizona and Arizona State. WT had several kids make all-tournament teams,
Tory Brown from Houston TX and Tyler Albracht from Clovis NM made it for the men and
Jackie Flanagan from Ft. Smith AR and Wendy Shelton from Albuquerque NM made it for
the women. It was a great way to kick the season off.
WT’s next tournament was in Wichita KS for the 53rd annual Midstates
Championships. This is a Tier II tournament that has grown into such a big tournament
that the teams compete in two different bowling centers. This tournament brings out
the “big boys” in the Midwest in college bowling. WT held their own against them, the men
finished in 4th place and the women finished in 7th. Two top ten finishes for our first
major tournament of the year is not too bad. We still have a ton of work to accomplish but
definitely saw the potential that our young teams have.
Our next two tournaments will be in Houston TX for the SWIBC II on November 10th at
Palace Lanes and Fairview Heights IL for the Team Matchgame Championships on November
23rd and 24th. I will report next month how WT fares in both tournaments.
Also, we are having our first “INSIDE LINE TO WT BOWLING” recruiting party of the
year on November 15th and 16th. So if there is a high school student or transfer student
interested in checking WT out and have fun with the current members of the team then
please contact me via either phone, email, or message me on facebook. We will have pizza,
information, and a fun tournament with the
current members of the team on Thursday
evening and a campus tour on Friday morning.
Looking forward to seeing lots of new faces, and
letting kids know what WT has to offer.
Until next time…
the lanes. In the Ladies division
The following Saturday on
October, 20th Mel’s hosted the
Annual Georgetown Evening
which was open to all USBC
sanctioned bowlers. After four
games of qualifying, the top
five bowled a stepladder final
to determine the winner of
the $400 first prize. The first
match had local favorite Jimmy
Thompson defeating Bryan
Walker. Jason Gaines defeated
Thompson in the second
match and went on to bowl
last weeks’ House Champ in
division one, Shane Connally.
Connally defeated Gaines and
moved on to face the tournament
leader, Jay Ashbaugh who
is one of the premier amateur
bowlers in the southwest.
Gaines kept it close until the
end, but Ashbaugh came out
on top. The tournament paid
the top six places and handed
out over $1000 in prize money.
Cliff Barnes had the lone
300 game of the tourney and
earned a $100 bonus for it from
The Bowling Foundation
awards four schools with grants
ARLINGTON — The Bowling
Foundation announced it
has awarded grants in the form
of mobile bowling equipment
to four schools. The funding is
part of the foundation's continuing
effort to help enhance
lives through the sport of bowling.
The Mobile Bowling Equipment
program annually helps
schools, parks and recreation
departments, disabled and disadvantaged
service groups and
other organizations and youth
groups purchase equipment to
teach and enjoy bowling.
Schools receiving grants are
Lawton Public Schools,
Lawton, Okla.
St. Charles D303 Elementary
Physical Education, St.
Charles, Ill.
P.S. 396K - Ramon Betances
School, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Crimson Elementary School,
Mesa, Ariz.
The grants are awarded in
the form of bowling kits (value
$1200 each) which include
six carpet bowling lanes,
rubberized bowling balls and
pins, plus instructional DVDs
to assist coaches and teachers
in introducing and instructing
students in the game of
bowling.
"It is an honor and a
privilege to award the Bowling
Foundation grants to these
schools and organizations,"
said Nancy Schenk, president
of The Bowling Foundation.
PBA REGIONAL ROUNDUP:
CHRIS BARNES WINS
22ND REGIONAL TITLE IN
RICHARDSON
Fresh off his PBA International
Tour victory in the
Columbia 300 Vienna Open in
Austria on Oct. 7, Chris Barnes
of Double Oak, Texas, dominated
the field to win his 22nd
PBA Regional title in the PBA
Southwest Region Dallas Open,
presented by Dallas Orthopaedic
Trauma Surgeons, at AMF
Richardson (Texas) Lanes on
Sunday, Oct 21.
Barnes led the 12-game
qualifying round by 199 pins
over Sean Lavery-Spahr of Denton,
Texas, and won nine of his
16 matches to build his lead to
266 pins over runner-up Dino
Castillo of Carrollton, Texas.
Barnes finished with a 28-game
total of 6,632 pins, including
match game bonus pins.
In the weekend’s only
other regional event, amateur
B.J. Moore of Apex, N.C.,
defeated top qualifier Lee
Vanderhoef of Greenville, S.C.,
234-202, to win the PBA South
Region Franklin (Va.) Open at
Franklin Bowling Center on
Sunday.
so many schools are having
their budgets cut, and these
grants help to provide some
small financial relief to help
maintain and improve the
resources these schools need to
continue to enrich the lives of
our children."
Schenk added, "The hardest
part of the entire process is not
being able to award everyone
who applies a grant. Each
program is so worthy and it is
difficult to choose only a few
programs when all those who
apply are in need of assistance.
We take into account a number
of factors including which
applicants best represent The
Bowling Foundation's mission
to enhance the lives of others
in need through the sport of
bowling."
Schenk said it is always a
joy to award these grants to
these organizations (schools).
"Bowling is an American pastime
and one of the few sports
you can do your entire lifetime.
It's our honor to help out those
who teach our children to be
active and healthy for today
and tomorrow."
Public or private educational
institutions, grades K-8; or
501(c) 3 non-profit organizations
serving youth in grades
K-8 are eligible to receive the
annual grants. An organization
is eligible to receive funding
once every three years. Individuals
are not eligible to apply
or receive awards.
Moore posted a 6-6 match
play record with 4,510 total
pins for 20 games to qualify
third for the stepladder finals,
131 pins behind Vanderhoef,
and defeated Chris Hans of
Rocky Mount, N.C., 255-172,
in the semi-final match to
advance to the title match.
He earned $2,000 for his win,
but doesn’t receive credit for
a PBA title because he is a
non-member.
Two senior and one
standard events are scheduled
for the final pre-WSOB IV
weekend. The PBA East Region
will conduct its annual Dom
DiCicco Memorial Senior Open
at Glassboro (N.J.) Bowling and
Entertainment, Oct. 26-28, while
joint one-day events are on tap
for the PBA Midwest/Central
from the International Bowling
Campus, and additional
pictures of local high school
teams. All to give it the book a
very local feel.
Miller starts the book by
describing what bowling is and
the many different ways that
the game is enjoyed. From there
he details the origins of the
game, from its start in Egypt to
its European variations.
My favorite section of the
book is where Miller catalogs
and describes, in great detail,
the variations of the game of
which there are MANY; many
more than I ever would have
guessed. Some of them sound
extremely fun to play and I
only wish there were places to
enjoy those alternatives to the
10-pin game we enjoy today.
The book illustrates the
timeline of bowling through
vibrant pictures, and how it
gained respectability in the
mid 1800’s to the point where
prominent families would build
bowling lanes inside their
Bowling: America’s greatest indoor pastime
World Showdown, a new international
competition produced
by Teen Masters founder Gary
Beck, will be webcast on PBA’s
online bowling channel, Xtra
Frame, as a part of the PBA
World Series of Bowling IV
lineup of programs.
Teen Masters World Showdown
qualifying and match
play, in 18-under and 14-under
age groups, will be conducted
at Red Rock Bowling Center in
Las Vegas Nov. 8-10 with the
finals moving to the PBA television
QUICK NOTES:
Because no player took
up Mike Edwards’ challenge
for a renewal of the PBA All-In
Showdown, a proposed unofficial
kickoff event for PBA
World Series of Bowling IV, the
event has been cancelled.
Overlooked on last week’s
list of women who have
won PBA Regional titles was
Adrienne Miller, Albuquerque,
N.M., who won a PBA West
Region non-champions title in
Las Vegas in November, 2010.
Miller is the sixth woman
to win a PBA title, joining
previously-noted Liz Johnson,
Kelly Kulick, Missy Parkin,
Shannon O’Keefe and Clara
Guerrero.
mansions. Bowling eventually
moved indoors in 1840, in New
York City which helped grow
participation.
The author does a great job
of describing who the early
bowlers were, white males, but
then explains how bowling became
all-inclusive for everyone
to be able to participate. The
game we love today is built for
all genders, races and most importantly
does not discriminate
against any physical stature.
Miller then moves on to
inform the reader about the
technological advances and the
move to being a family-friendly
activity. Scoring units, plastic
pins, pinsetters, and even airconditioning;
all of the things
it takes to create “America’s
greatest indoor pastime”
Nothing bowling related
is missed in the book, as we
are taken through the most
influential time in the game,
the biggest era in bowling, the
LEE SPENDS A
to connect with friends and
have fun. During her bowling
career, Susan has shot a
299, several 700 series, and
recently her first 300. She
averages a 201 and is also the
2nd vice president of the Dallas
Women’s USBC. Susan enjoys
traveling and participating
in tournaments locally and
nationally. While bowling, you
will often see Susan crocheting
to keep her mind off the
game and keep herself focused.
When she isn’t bowling you
can find her taking care of her
grandchildren, watching her
favorite television show, The
Big Bang Theory, and enjoying
the occasional “chick-flick”.
Susan, now 55, still loves
and enjoys bowling just as
much as she did when she first
picked up a ball, over 40 years
ago. You can catch Susan at
Rowlett-Bowl-A-Rama during
the week helping out or bowling
in league.
Mark Miller with his new book.
creation of the “Beer teams”,
bowling TV shows, celebrity
bowling, and bowling for dollars.
All were very influential
in making bowling the largest
participatory sport in the
world, and Miller does a great
job of explaining how that
happened.
Mark finishes by offering
his view of the evolution of
the game, the decline of league
bowlers and bowling centers, but
also the positives that bowling
enjoys. New, bright, and upscale
bowling centers are being built
that allow 70 million people to
participate in bowling every year.
The increase in high school and
collegiate bowling, and international
play has also lead to a new
generation that is living to bowl.
The author, Mark Miller, is
a bowling historian who was
commissioned to write the
book by the British company,
Shire Books in 2011. Miller
was selected because of his
knowledge of the game, and
the nearly 25 years he spent
working with the American
Bowling Congress/USBC. He
worked with the International
Bowling Museum and the USBC
to get the art and photos for the
book, and they come together
brilliantly to give a never
before seen view of bowling.
Anyone who is a fan of
bowling and thinks they know
where bowling began and how
it became the game we play
today needs to read this book.
My guess is that the reader
will be fascinated by what they
see and read in this book, and
upon completion will be much
more in touch with the game.
It’s an educating, fun, and
quick read with lots of great
visual impressions.
The book can be purchased
at Amazon.com in both print
and Kindle versions, at the
International Bowling Museum
in Arlington, and directly
through Mark Miller.
The cost of the book is $10,
and Mark can be contacted directly
Will international players again dominate
PBA World Series of Bowling?
American players don’t expect repeat of last year’s performance
LAS VEGAS — During the
Professional Bowlers Association’s
World Series of Bowling
III at South Point Casino and
Hotel in 2011, international
bowlers stunned their American
hosts by winning seven of
eight titles awarded.
A year earlier, Finland’s
Osku Palermaa and Korea’s
Yong-Jin Gu made WSOB history
as the first international
players to win WSOB events in
a foreshadowing of things to
come.
While the World Series of
Bowling is not a team event,
the fourth annual edition will
resume Nov. 2-11 as a multievent
international competition
that will showcase 66 of the
most talented players from
around the world. WSOB IV
will feature players from a
record 17 countries (Australia,
Bahrain, Denmark, England,
Mexico, Sweden, Germany,
Korea, Venezuela, Colombia,
Finland, Canada, the U.S. plus
first-time participants Costa
Rica, Iceland, The Philippines
and Saudi Arabia). Sweden and
Korea are both sending the
largest contingents they’ve ever
sent to the World Series.
Whether team scores
are kept or not, WSOB IV is
going to be a matter of pride
for America’s best players
who hope to prevent another
spanking by their international
competitors.
“We had our chances to
win titles and didn't get it done
last year,” said reigning PBA
Player of the Year Sean Rash of
Montgomery, Ill., who led U.S.
players with a record six television
appearances during WSOB
III, but failed to win a title.
“With the format on TV
last year, the best player didn't
win every time, so to say. I do
think the international players
can repeat their performances,
but it’s a new year and new
things can and will happen. As
much as I travel worldwide, the
players around the world are,
for sure, very good, but I would
take our USA players any day
when it comes down to it.”
The most prominent international
players in last year’s
World Series, however, see no
reason why they can’t repeat,
led by Australian two-handed
star Jason Belmonte who won
BOWLER FRIENDLY
PRO SHOPS & SERVICES
three WSOB III titles in 2011.
“I can’t see why we can’t
dominate again,” Belmonte
said. “The international contingent
has only become stronger
since the last WSOB. With the
formats as short as they are for
most of the events, it's possible
for anything to happen.”
Former PBA Player of the
Year Chris Barnes of Double
Oak, Texas, wasn’t surprised
by how well the international
bowlers performed a year ago,
but doesn’t expect a repeat.
“I’m sure there will be
more attention paid to that
(U.S. vs. international) aspect
this year, but we already knew
the international players were
very good,” the 14-time PBA
Tour titlist said. “Now everyone
else does, too. That being said,
I think the U.S. players as a
whole were disappointed in last
year's performance and will be
looking to improve on it this
year.”
Will the international
players repeat their domination
this year? “No,” Barnes said
emphatically.
Finland’s Osku Palermaa,
who became the first international
player to win the PBA
World Championship during
last year’s WSOB, disagrees.
“Of course (we can
repeat),” Palermaa said.
“Obviously after it happened
last year it can happen again,
but I don't think we will be as
dominant. There are so many
good players from both sides,
you never know.”
Mike Fagan of Dallas, who
had a career-year during the
2011-12 season, plans to do
his best to prevent last year’s
results.
“I don't know if the play
of the international players is
promoting American pride,
but it certainly was a wake-up
call,” Fagan said. “The rest
of the world has some great
players and a good number of
tournaments to sharpen their
skills. The international players
are certainly going to be a force
for many years to come.
“But I would find it difficult
for the Americans to get
completely shut out again at
the WSOB,” he said. “I’m going
to try my best to not let that
happen.”
“Anything is possible in
bowling, but I have a hard time
believing that something like
last year will happen again,”
fellow Finn Mika Koivuniemi
said, stopping short of discounting
another powerhouse
performance by the record
international contingent.
“Everyone now knows that
many international players can
win in the World Series.”
England’s Stuart Williams,
who won his first PBA Tour
title in last year’s WSOB, noted,
“Obviously it’s going to be
THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, November 1, 2012 | Page 15
nearly impossible for the international
players to win all the
titles again because there are
so many more U.S. players. But
I still expect a strong showing,
especially from the European
contingent.”
PBA Hall of Famer Norm
Duke of Clermont, Fla., doesn’t
see the World Series as a global
confrontation.
“This is not a team competition,
nor is it an ‘us against
them’ event,” Duke said. “It’s
all about individual pride. I
bowl for my family's living and
that’s plenty of motivation for
me. I’m trying to win bowling
tournaments against everyone
on earth.”
World Series IV will feature
five PBA Tour title events –
the Alka Seltzer Plus Cold
Cheetah Championship, Viper
Championship, Chameleon
Championship, Bowlers Journal
PBA Scorpion Championship
and the PBA World Championship
(the season’s first major).
It will generate more than 100
hours of live coverage on PBA’s
Xtra Frame online bowling
channel and the first six ESPN
telecasts of the season (including
the Bayer Advanced Aspirin
WBT Men’s and Women’s
Finals presented by the PBA)
on Sundays at 1 p.m. ET from
Dec. 9 through Jan. 13.
WSOB IV also is the
launching pad for a new set of
goals by all players, including
the 2012-13 PBA Player of the
Year race.
“My goals are simple,” Rash
said. “I want to give myself
chances at making TV shows,
win titles, win majors, win
Player of the Year and keep
learning. Every time we shoe it
up, the game is changing.”
Barnes said, “My goals
include winning the USBC
Masters to complete the Grand
Slam and winning a second
Player of the Year title. To
accomplish this, I think I need
to win at least one of the WSOB
events, maybe two.”
Fagan wants to improve
upon last year. “It’s never easy
to win on the PBA Tour, so
my goals are to give myself
a chance in every event and
be prepared for anything,” he
said. “If I give myself many
chances, hopefully I can cash
in on a few. It’s also important,
because the World Series
formats are short, to come out
of the gates strong and not look
back.”
Duke has his eye on a
third Player of the Year award.
He won in 1994 and 2000. “I
want to have a shot at Player
of the Year. It’s a lofty goal
and usually requires a victory
in at least one of the majors,”
he said, “so all of my preparation
and decision-making is
with this goal in mind. It’s a
plan that has served me well
throughout the years.”
Belmonte’s goals are understated:
“I just want to bowl to
the best of my ability. If I bowl
each frame and focus on the
process, then I trust the results
I want will follow.”
Palermaa would settle for
another year like last year:
“I had a pretty good year last
year, winning my first major at
the WSOB, so I'll try and repeat
that. Bowling at the same place
for multiple events at the start
of the year gives you a chance
of doing good, so I'll try and
get a good start and just keep
the momentum going.”
Koivuniemi is one win
away from completing the
PBA’s “Grand Slam.” “My big
goal is to win the PBA World
Championship and get that
fourth major to complete the
grand slam,” Koivuniemi said.
Williams just wants to
be consistent in a good way.
“I don’t have any particular
goals, just to try and continue
learning and improving my
performances,” he said. “I
think the key to the World
Series in general is to stay
positive on the days when you
are struggling because it’s such
a long format for the World
Championship. Hopefully there
won’t be too many times when
I’m struggling.”
900 Global to sponsor
Showcase Lanes in 2013
ARLINGTON — The United
States Bowling Congress and
900 Global have agreed on a
sponsorship deal making 900
Global the official sponsor of
the Showcase Lanes and two
new side tournaments being
held in conjunction with the
2013 USBC Open and Women's
Championships in Reno, Nev.
The 900 Global Showcase
Lanes will give bowlers the
chance to book practice
sessions on the tournament
lane conditions or get coaching
tips from a USBC Silver
coach before competing on the
main championship lanes. The
concept was introduced at the
2012 Open Championships in
Baton Rouge, La.
For 2013, renovations to the
ground floor of the National
Bowling Stadium will allow for
10 Showcase Lanes, compared
to four lanes at the Baton
Rouge River Center in 2012.
The additional capacity
means more opportunities for
bowlers to practice and compete
while in the Biggest Little
City in the World. Competitors
from both the Open and
Women's Championships will
be able to hone their skills
on the exact lane conditions
they'll face at their respective
tournaments.
Traditionally, the lane
conditions for the Open and
Women's Championships are
posted on BOWL.com and
available to bowling centers
across the country just before
the start of each tournament.
Matching the oil, lane machine,
lane surface and environment
are proven challenges,
so being able to practice on
lanes maintained by the USBC
event staff, and so close to the
tournament action, will provide
an unmatchable opportunity.
The one-of-a-kind NBS will
welcome more than 50,000
Open Championships competitors,
and more than 25,000
bowlers will make their way
to the Reno-Sparks Convention
Center for the Women's
Championships. The 2013 Open
Championships will kick off
March 1, and the Women's
Championships will start April
12.
Reservations are recommended
for bowlers wanting
practice or coaching sessions
on the 900 Global Showcase
Lanes. The Open and Women's
Championships oil patterns
both will be available.
900 Global also will sponsor
two unique side events on the
Showcase Lanes at the NBS -
the 900 Global Two-Game Challenge
and the Who's Got the
Look Baker Bonanza presented
by 900 Global. The side events
will have their own lane condi-
tion, and bowlers will be able
to compete anytime lanes are
available beginning at 11 a.m.
Hours are subject to change.
As the presenting sponsor
for the Showcase Lanes and
the side events, 900 Global
also will have the opportunity
to show off its product line.
PIN POINTS
TO PONDER
By CHUCK PEZZANO
I’ve said it before and I’ll
say it again.
One of bowling’s greatest
assets, particularly in the youth
area is that everyone gets to
play in a fully meaningful way.
Talk shows devote hours to the
subject of how to come up with
ways to guarantee that every
youngster gets to play. There
are all kinds of special rules in
most sports aimed at making
the kids a bigger part of the
scene.
Lineups are extended,
minutes are assured, mandates
often alter general routines and
talent, will to win and excel
and such silly things as no
scoring, no winning and no
statistics are kept.
In sports and in life there
are winners and losers and
win or lose there always is
learning.
Many sports have wisely
invested time and money to
develop interest in their sports,
not to create future stars but
to create players, coaches,
officials and fans.
Bowling must keep its
accent on the many junior programs
and school activities that
range from pre-school through
post college. Bowling can be
expensive for youngsters and
their families and they should
not be viewed as merely a possible
source of current income,
but the life blood of the sport
pumping new life forever and
ever.
Every organization in
bowling must fully recognize
the fact of bowling life that
bowling’s plus with youth is
that everyone gets to play, not
in a forced way, but in a full
participant and competitive
status.
Junior bowlers can be
Leagues can have two, three
or more on a team, and there
is always room for one more
on some team, and they all get
to play and get to know how
they do as team members and
individuals.
Boys learn early that girls
can bowl well and aren’t just
mere girls but valuable teammates
and opponents. Boys and
girls get to know each other
better in various competitive as
well as social situations.
Parents almost dread going
to a sporting contest when
their children are border line
players, good enough to play,
but not good enough to always
play. Parents of organized
young league bowlers know
their youngsters will be in action,
no matter how well they
shoot, and that the kids will
be in a classified situation that
is either competitive or will be
by a handicap procedure that
makes for some semblance
of equality based on current
ability.
Bowling is fortunate that it
is a sport that can handle differences
in age, size or ability
in one of the fairest ways of
any sport. But bowling should
be shouting from the rooftops
to youngsters and parents and
adults and educators that this
is the rarest of sports, the sport
everyone gets to play for real.
Those kids who can start
bowling at two or three years
of age with bumper bowling
can still be bowling decades,
and even a century later,
and the same fact is evident
everyone gets to play.
Barren County High School
never has had a bowling program
but is ready to jump into
the sport that saw a successful
debut as part of the state’s
athletic program in 2011. More
than 80 schools participated
in the Kentucky High School
Athletic Association’s inaugural
bowling season and the KHSAA
expects that number to grow to
more than 100 schools within
the next three years.
Student surveys at Barren
County High School indicate
25-30 students are interested in
joining the bowling program.
“We have met with our
local bowling center and have
an agreement for practice
and matches,” Barren County
Schools Athletic Director Bob
Blair said in his application letter.
“Everyone is excited about
the possibilities. I have been in
contact with local schools that
already bowl, and I am beginning
to schedule matches.”
Nevada bowler finds continued
success at Storm National Mixed
RENO, Nev. - Renee Steele of
Carson City, Nev., finds herself
in familiar territory as she fired
an 816 series and raced to the
top of the standings in three
divisions at the Storm National
Mixed Championships.
Steele, who used the momentum
of a perfect game to
capture four titles at the 2011
event, rolled games of 258, 269
and 289 to set the pace in the
Open Singles Women's Scratch
division and received an additional
12 pins of handicap per
game to grab the lead in Open
Singles Women's Handicap
with 852. Angela Maddock of
Gilbert, Ariz., previously held
the lead in both divisions with
663 and 735, respectively.
The right-hander also looks
to repeat as the Mixed Singles
Women's Scratch champion
as she took the top spot with
games of 189, 287 and 216 for
a 692 total. Melissa Hurst of
Decatur, Ill., previously led
with 679. Steele claimed the
All-Events Women's Scratch
and Handicap titles as well as
the Mixed Doubles Scratch title
with Larry Cooper of Reno,
Nev., at the 2011 National
Mixed Championships.
Steele has competed in
many events at the National
Bowling Stadium over the
years, but found herself in a
hurry to make her 2012 appearance.
As she rushed from work
to make her squad on time,
she found the angst of the trip
helped to ease her performance
on the lanes.
"I ended up getting off of
work late, so I was rushing to
make it on time," said Steele,
who also rolled an 816 series
during a local event at the Stadium
in 2005. "I had used all of
my adrenaline to make it here.
By the time I started bowling, I
was just able to relax and go one
frame at a time. I've bowled a lot
of tournaments here, so I'm able
to feel comfortable and just have
a lot of confidence on the lanes.
It's just a nice place to bowl."
David Cheng of Novato,
Calif., and Caleb Nakata of
Loomis, Calif., also found
success at the Stadium as each
rolled a perfect game during
competition at the National
Mixed Championships.
Cheng's 300 game helped
him take the lead in All-Events
Men's Handicap with a 2,120
score. Jake Odell of Santa
Clara, Calif., is currently in
second with 2,109.
SAN ANTONIO – Chris Galler
dominated scoring last week
at BRC Thousand Oaks with a
superb, award-winning 289-268-
league outing.
Helen Keith’s, Galler’s league
mate, banner 238-208-300 = 746
David Amshey shared highgame
an award-winning 12-bagger
runner-up honors with a near
perfect 299 solo.
consistently provide the highest
Bowlers Journal International
was founded in 1913 by
Dave Luby. It has covered the
sport from the days of pinboys
through the introduction of
automatic scoring, the evolution
of televised bowling, leagues,
tournaments and all aspects
of bowling ball and lane
technology. “The BJ” has done
more to cover the business,
recreational and sport sides of
bowling around the world than
any other publication under the
leadership of Dave Luby, his son
Mort, and later his grandson
Mort Jr. In 1994, Mort Luby Jr.
sold the company to long-time
employees Keith Hamilton and
Mike Panozzo. Today, it remains
bowling’s foremost magazine.
The magazine has evolved
over the years. It began as “The
National Bowlers Journal and
Billiard Revue.” In 1988, the
company changed its corporate
name from National Bowlers
Journal, Inc. to Luby Publishing
Inc. Currently Bowlers
Journal also delivers both consumer
and bowling business
news and information to an
international audience through
recreation? Are sports and
recreation the same, or are we
just arguing semantics.
I looked in my old Webster
dictionary and there is very
little difference in the definition
of the two. Sport – any
activity or experience that
gives enjoyment, or recreation;
pastime; diversion. Recreation
– any form of play, amusement,
relaxation, used for this
purpose, as games, sports,
hobbies…
Many of us don’t see a big
difference in the two. In fact
many see bowling as more
recreation than a sport. Many
of the new “entertainment
centers,” are built strictly as
recreation catering to parties
over league bowling.
I believe the only reason the
integers want it to be considered
a sport over recreation
is to get it in to the Olympics,
which I don’t believe will
happen anyway. The United
States would send the best
professional bowlers to what
should be an amateur environment
and come away with all
the gold. We don’t like to lose,
that’s why we have professional
basketball players beating up
on mostly amateur players from
foreign countries. It would be
the same with bowling.
Many countries have
bowling and have competitive
competition, but they don’t
have the training or ability
to compete on the same level
as our professionals. That’s
why we see American bowlers
capturing titles all over
the world. We have won gold
in the Dominican Republic
in 1997; in 2011 PABCON
Championships in Guadalajara,
Mexico; between 1995 and
2010 the United States won 8
of 16 (50%) men’s AMF World
Cup championships. For the
talented, amateur and professional
bowler it is definitely a
sport.
However, league bowlers
like me find it more of a
recreation. It’s not as competitive,
there are very few scratch
leagues anymore and travel
leagues are getting smaller.
I bowl only three senior
leagues and although we have
high average bowlers most
realize it’s all based on lane
conditions. Seniors, the vast
majority, see bowling as a
recreation, a means to see old
friends, converse, and have a
good time.
So let’s talk about the fix
and go with semantics and say
bowling is a sport on the professional/semi-professional
side
the training venues, find good
coaches and study the game.
For us old codgers we just want
competitive.
Youth bowling is a grooming
ground for future stars just
as is any high school organized
athletic program. Gary Beck
has the right idea with lane
conditions and bowling balls
for the Teen Masters. That
event is designed to get youth
bowlers prepared for college
bowling programs, Junior
Team USA and ultimately the
professional tour. That’s where
competitive conditions belong.
But on Saturday when the Pee
Wee and Bantam kids come
wanting to have fun it’s simply
recreation.
Do I consider it a sport? Absolutely.
I have been bowling
since I was 12 years old and I
am now 74. However, I enjoy
it more as a recreation now
than a sport. But, I look at our
professional bowlers, collegiate
bowlers, Team USA and Junior
Team USA and see their work
ethic and there is no doubt that
for them it is a sport.
Than I look at me and my
retired friends, we practice
when it’s free; we buy quality
balls, and bowl in centers with
a relatively easy shot. That my
friends is recreation. So as one
famous American said, “Why
can’t we all just get along,” and
stop worrying about semantics,
You say sport, I say sport/recreation.
The truth of the matter
is we are both right.
See you on the lanes.
