Daugherty wins PBA
Scorpion Championship
“Thumbless” delivery proves the difference as
Floridian wins first PBA Tour title
LAS VEGAS — After bowling
a Professional Bowlers Association
record-low 100 game
in his only previous television
appearance, Tom Daugherty of
Wesley Chapel, Fla., redeemed
himself in the Bowlers Journal
Scorpion Championship,
winning three consecutive
matches including a 200-182
victory over top qualifier Osku
Palermaa of Finland, to capture
his first PBA Tour title at South
Point Hotel and Casino.
The Bowlers Journal
To my bowling family
I can never thank you
enough for the support, kindness
and compassion you have
shown Emma and I in the last
few months. Danny would be
extremely proud of the way
the bowling community came
together in someone’s time of
need, even if it did not involve
his family. I am overwhelmed
by everything that has happened
the last few months,
good and bad. From thoughts
and prayers to donations and
fundraisers, I will never be
able to express how much they
mean to me. Knowing that you
are there for us has brought
me comfort. I am proud to be a
part of this family.
Thank you for everything
you have done,
John Szczerbinski and Danielle McEwan champions at
the 2013 USBC Team USA Trials.
USBC Media
Szczerbinski, McEwan
take Team USA Trials titles
HENDERSON, Nev. —
John Szczerbinski of North
Tonawanda, N.Y., and Danielle
McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y.,
emerged as the champions
Monday at the 2013 United
States Bowling Congress Team
USA Trials and will represent
the United States at the QubicaAMF
World Cup later this
year.
Szczerbinski held on in a
tight championship match,
defeating defending champion
Marshall Kent of Yakima,
Wash., 218-211, while McEwan
successfully defended her
title with a 267-194 win over
Diandra Asbaty of Chicago at
Sunset Station's Strike Zone
Bowling Center.
Kent had a chance to take
the title and continue his reign
as Team USA Trials champion
but needing a double in the
final frame, he left the 2-4-5
on his first shot to concede the
title to Szczerbinski.
"My goal coming here this
week was just to make Team
USA again," said Szczerbinski,
who earned his third term
on Team USA. "Winning this
tournament is just icing on the
cake and being able to go to
the World Cup? It's just hard to
explain everything I'm feeling."
In the women's title match,
McEwan rolled to her second
All Star Bowl grand
opening, page 6
consecutive title with ease,
knocking off Asbaty, who
earned a spot on Team USA for
a record 15th time.
"It was such a long week,
and I'm completely drained,"
said McEwan, who is now a
two-time Team USA member.
"I remember last year when
I won, it really didn't sink
in until I got back to the
hotel room, and I think that's
happening again. It's just an
amazing feeling."
In the semifinals, Kent took
down John Janawicz of Winter
Haven, Fla., 257-196, while
McEwan defeated Josie Earnest
of Nashville, Tenn., 199-181.
All of the players who
advanced to the stepladder
finals earned automatic spots
on Team USA in 2013 by
surviving a grueling five-day,
30-game format that awarded
points based on the position
they finished in each day.
The National Selection
Committee also announced the
remainder of the Team USA
roster, which was made up
of two men and two women
based on their performance
at the Team USA Trials and
five men and five women who
met eligibility requirements
and submitted resumes for
consideration.
Random Thoughts
I saw a fantastic and inspiring
story on the NBC Today
show last week. It was on a
high school student from Iowa
City who launched a twitter
account focused solely on sending
positive messages. What a
novel concept huh? Jeremiah
Anthony started the account
to fight back against bullying,
and specifically internetbullying.
His thought is that
“it’s easier to find the nice
things in people, instead of
the bad things.” And I couldn’t
agree more. I absolutely loved
the story, and the response
from the kids at the school has
been overwhelmingly positive
and it’s quite possibly making
a difference. Basically he just
tweets real, truthful, positive
comments to his schoolmates.
It’s as simple as that, and who
doesn’t like a little compliment
to start off their day. He’s
recruited several other friends,
and they have started the twitter
handle, @westhighbros.
Go ahead and follow them, @
theBowlingNewsNet does. It’s
a real pay-it-forward story, and
one that we bowlers could use
as well. The next time you
Mark London’s Just Paying
Attention column this week
is must read material. He
interviews super-coach Rick
Benoit to discuss his brother
Bob’s remarkable 300 game
in the title match of the 1988
Quaker State Open. I remember
that 300 game vividly. I lived
to watch the PBA on Saturday
afternoons and this was a great
one. I watched the show with
Brad Ellis at his parent’s house,
and I have always regarded
that as one of the best games
I’ve ever seen. Rick gives some
very interesting background on
Bob’s game and how it evolved
into helping him become a
great champion. Now we need
to interview Pete McCordic to
tell us about his TV 300. Not
the best game I’ve ever seen,
but easily the most exciting
and dramatic. Never have I
seen a man shake so much,
makes me smile just thinking
about how great that moment
was.
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? It would be the
Brunswick Black Ice.
What is your all-time high
average? 221 last year.
How long have you been
bowling? I started when I was 8
yrs-old, my dad got me started.
I bowled until I was about 24
then quit for about four years.
I am now back and averaging
about 215-220. My cousin is
Ernest Harwell III and has over
80 sanctioned 300 games. He
used to be my main coach and
taught how to properly throw
the ball.
Most memorable bowling moment?
It has to be this series.
When I realized I had the 800
in the 9th frame I had to take
a moment just to let it sink in.
I have had lots of close calls
and to finally shoot 800 was
wonderful.
What lessons has the
game taught you? I would say
patience. As a younger kid
I would get angry, but as I
have gotten older I understand
that being patient and staying
focused works best.
Wanda Parker
This week’s high female is
Wanda Parker who shot 236-
246-280 for a 762 series in the
Tuesday High Rollers league
at AMF Showplace Garland
Lanes. Wanda says she has a
new breath of life with bowling
and still loves the sport.
Where were you born?
Toledo, OH where they used
to have a tour stop. I moved to
Texas in 1990. Graduated from
College, and moved to Texas.
We have much better weather
here.
What ball did you throw?
The Storm IQ Tour. I can’t put
it down, I have been throwing
it everywhere since October.
It’s a very versatile ball.
Thoughts on the big series? I
got some new equipment. I’ve
changed up my arsenal and
found some balls that are more
conducive to my game. I moved
away from Storm equipment a
few years ago, but my teammate
convinced me to get that
ball.
What is your all-time
favorite movie? Major League it
is a classic sports movie. I also
like The Program.
What is your favorite
restaurant? McDonalds, how
scary is that!
Where did you take your best
vacation? LA. I got to go to the
Staples and the old Forum. We
didn’t get to go to a game but
got to hangout outside, it was
playoff season.
What is your favorite song
of all time? Anita Baker is my
favorite musician.
If you were the commissioner
what would you change? The
like to make it more fair for
amateurs. We need to limit the
number of balls you can use.
Just Paying
Attention By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
His older brother Bob was
at the end of his first PBA Tour
stop after taking two years
off for a major overhaul of his
game. Rick Benoit had seen
first-hand the work Bob did
starting with a 10-pound ball,
then a 12, and then 15, learning
to generate more rotational
torque to the ball, increasing
entry angle to the pocket and
through the pins. Results to
this point brought Bob from
limited success to top seed of
the 1988 PBA Quaker State
Open stepladder finals. Rick
had a front row seat at Forum
Bowl that fateful Saturday
afternoon, about to be shown
nationwide on ABC Television.
Bob Benoit
Rick Benoit
Little did he know on that
day, January 23, 1988, his life
would be forever changed, too.
It evolved into the world-class
coaching career that continues
to this day.
Rick recently reflected
rather philosophically on the
events leading up to one of
the most amazing stories to a
TV 300 game in PBA history.
Although Bob did bowl league
at Forum Bowl in prior years,
there are a few details even
long-time Metroplex bowlers
may not know.
“Many know of Bob’s
reinvention of his game, but
few know that Bob also built
a successful business during
this time as well. Bob owned
and operated his own auto
body shop and it was not an
easy decision to go back out
on tour. I can tell you that the
entire family was not behind
the decision to shut down the
successful business to follow
his dream. I can tell you of
our conversation where I said
Bob you have to follow your
dreams. If you don’t, you will
regret it in future years. Do not
worry about success or failure
just follow your dreams, you
will be good at whatever you
do,” offered Rick Benoit.
It was at this point Rick’s
theories of ball motion could
explain what Bob was doing
with his new release and roll,
theories that form the basis for
his teachings that have taken
him around the world more
than a few times. So how did
Rick come up with these?
“The Dallas/Fort Worth
area and the PBA Southwest
Region made Bob the bowler
he became and I look back on
those years and realize that it
also gave me my career as a
coach. If anybody was to do the
research, I promise you that
era and the bowlers that were a
part of it were as special as any
group to ever impact the PBA
tour,” Benoit added. “Oh what a
different time it was. The days
of urethane, static weights and
talk of pin carry. I will say
this; I still see ball motion today
the same way I saw it back
then. The only difference is it
is on a much wider scale. Ball
roll creates the special player
and what Bob had was a very
unique roll that allowed him
to see the lane and pin carry
differently. During those years,
we spoke often about pin carry
while today most bowlers talk
about balls and lane play. Bob,
as with many special bowlers
back then, could get their ball
to hit by what many bowlers
considered to be “roll out.”
Believe me, it was not a roll
out, it was just another part of
transition and Bob could use a
part of the pocket that scared
other bowlers. Bob could stay
ahead of the moves because he
had both sides of the pocket,
both light and heavy, he knew
it and would use that as part of
his strategy against anybody he
would face. Seeing the distance
where the ball would get in
to a roll was more important
than hitting specific board and
attacking that distance with a
certain angle was a priority.
That combination was the focus,
and believe it or not that is
still a conscious thought every
time I am helping a bowler.”
Rick was Brunswick’s
representative on the PBA Tour
in the late 90s and early 2000s,
helping numerous players
(even a few regional players
like myself) with his cutting
edge insight of ball angles and
reaction. If you have logged
onto his website, www.bowlu.
com, you have seen a small
sample of his work. Benoit
summed up his thoughts
about his brother’s first of four
do is watch a replay of the
show and realize how special
it was. I knew of the hard
work Bob put in, I knew of the
everyday challenges, I knew of
the concerns that were part of
the decision, and when it all
unfolded in front of the camera
it became a storybook reality.
Nobody could have imagined
this would happen, including
all of us who believed so
strongly in Bob as a person
or athlete. I honestly don’t
remember the event but I do
remember all the things that
surrounded it. And I am proud
of him for doing what many of
us only talk about doing. What
was a dream became a reality
only because his love for the
game was strong enough to
overpower those that said it
would be a mistake,” said Rick.
Grand opening for
All Star Bowl in Ennis
All Star Bowl in Ennis has
opened its doors again thanks
to the Cathey family, owners of
Red Bird Lanes in Duncanville.
“This area is going to continue
to grow and everything
has been trending towards
south of Dallas. So, I thought
it was a great opportunity to
open another center without
the cost of building a new one.
Our plans are to put in laser
tag and have the facility geared
towards a family entertainment
center so there is something to
do for everyone in the family,”
said Billy Joe Cathey, Managing
Partner.
It took a lot of hard work to
get the center cleaned up and
operational as it had sat idle for
some time under bank ownership.
Red Bird bowlers volunteered
their time and skills to
help with the renovations such
as Michael Brackney - electrical,
Patrick Sliger - plumbing,
Jimmy Travnicek - a/c, Rodney
Brooks – phone tech, and
Clifton Carrington - doors.
All Star Bowl will start short
season and winter leagues
this week and expect to have
leagues five nights a week.
The Cathey’s also plan to grow
their youth program as well as
getting the high school bowling
program back at the center.
“I would like to invite everyone
to come out and check
us out. We will start hosting
tournaments to get the good
bowlers in this area involved in
bowling again,” said Billy Joe.
Billy Joe did have one more
surprise up his sleeve on Saturday
as he proposed to longtime
girlfriend Lauren Daniel during
the Grand Opening festivities,
and yes she accepted.
“I’m proud of all their hard
work and their excitement.
I’m proud for my family. We
had a lot of people donating
their time and we can’t thank
them enough,” said owner Lois
Cathey of Billy Joe and Lauren.
Billy Joe would like to thank
Jeff, Jeffrey and Jennifer for
keeping Red Bird going; Rick
and Patti Holloway for their endless
hours of help; all of the staff
at All Star Bowl and my mom,
Lois, for making it possible.
CHICAGO - Bowlers Journal
International (BJI), the longestrunning
sports magazine in
America, is celebrating its
100th anniversary
throughout 2013.
“We have been
looking forward to
2013 for quite some
time,” said Luby
Publishing Inc. President
Keith Hamilton.
“This is a special
time for the magazine and the
industry.”
Hamilton noted that BJI’s
turning 100 is a great tribute
to bowling: “One industry
has supported one magazine
through two World Wars,
a Great Depression, several
recessions and 9/11. This is
a story that we want to tell
to the mainstream media - to
spotlight bowling in a positive
and loyal light.”
As part of the celebration,
each issue will contain a
feature of historical significance,
leading up to the actual
anniversary issue in November
By Leisha Murr
I know I talked about the
PBA last week, but I just
have to do it again this week
because I am so excited to see
some of the new PBA League
team competition starting next
week, Jan. 19-27, in Detroit.
The PBA Winter Swing will
consist of 4 tournaments, the
PBA Carmen Salvino, Mark
Roth and Don Carter Classics,
along with the Earl Anthony
PBA Players Championship.
The 125 player field for the
Winter Swing had reserved
spots for all 48 players on the
8 PBA League teams as their
individual daily qualifying
scores will also count towards
the team competition.
The eight teams are each
captained by a “Franchise
Player.” These players were
the top 8 PBA competition
point leaders from the 2011-12
season. The franchise players
had a league draft and picked
five fellow tour competitors and
an alternate to complete their
teams. Each team will have a
celebrity owner who will pick
their team names and logos.
Besides name and money, I
wonder what other presence
the owners will have in the
league, if any.
The first team, captained
by Norm Duke is the Dallas
Strikers with celebrity owner
TO- Terrell Owens. Duke chose
You meet All Types at the
Int’l Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame
(near the Six Flags in Arlington)
All ages will enjoy the colorful,
5,000-year history of bowling. The
collection of historical artifacts and
interactive presentations is the
perfect outing for a family, school
group, or club. The Hall of Fame
section of the museum is a dynamic
venue that honors the legends g of
the game, past and present. The
museum is an interactive
experience designed for people of
all ages. Explore this exciting game
from the time of ancient Egypt
up until il the h very present.
Rhino Page, Amleto Monacelli,
Bryon Smith, and Mike Machuga
to fill his team and the
supplemental pick was Mike
Wolfe.
Pete Weber’s team consists
of Tommy Jones, Scott
Norton, Jack Jurek, and John
Szczerbinski with Brad Angelo
as an alternate. This team was
picked up after Norton’s recent
win by sports icon and founder
the Women’s Sports Foundation
Billie Jean King. King is
also the co-founder of World
TeamTennis which is included
in the team’s name and logo,
the WTT KingPins out of New
York City.
Actor and comedian Kevin
Hart is the celebrity owner of
the Philadelphia Hitmen with
franchise player Bill O’Neill.
Drafted to his team are Mika
Koivuniemi, Chris Loschetter,
Mike DeVaney, and Dick Allen
with Dino Castillo as the
team’s supplemental pick.
Jason Belmonte’s team
is owned by professional
basketball player Chris Paul
who plays for the Los Angeles
Clippers. Not surprisingly his
team is named L.A. X. Joining
Belmonte are Wes Malott,
Andres Gomez, Parker Bohn
III, Dave Wodka, and alternate
Ildemaro Ruiz.
Retired professional football
player Jerome Bettis who lists
bowling as one of his passions
as a youth in Detroit is the
owner of the Motown Muscle
with captain Mike Fagan.
Adding to Fagan’s scores for
the team qualifying are Tom
Smallwood, Mike Scroggins,
Ronnie Russell, and Jesse Buss.
Fagan’s supplemental pick for
the team is Kelly Kulick.
Chris Barnes’ team draft
picks include a couple of
Englishmen, Dom Barrett
and Stuart Williams, as well
as a couple of fellow Wichita
State University Alums Josh
Blanchard and Nathan Bohr.
His alternate pick was Jon
VanHees. Actor and comedian
Chris Hardwick, who is the
son of PBA Hall of Famer
Billy Hardwick, is the owner
of Barnes’ team the Silver Lake
Atom Splitters. Chris Hardwick
started an “All Star Celebrity
Bowling” challenge on the
Nerdist YouTube channel where
celebrity teams compete for
charity. If I ever make it to
California, I want to check
out the Spare Time Bar in the
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
with just 2 lanes where these
are filmed. Looks like a really
neat venue.
Professional football
linebacker for the Pittsburgh
Steelers, LaMarr Woodley is
the owner for the Pittsburgh
Jack Rabbits with franchise
player Osku Palermaa.
Palermaa chose a few other
international players to join
his team including Martin
Larsen, Dan MacLelland, and
Thomas Larsen. Joining them
are Patrick Allen and Anthony
LaCaze as the alternate.
The 8th team has not
yet found an owner, but is
captained by the current PBA
Player of the year Sean Rash.
Other team members are Ryan
Ciminelli, Ryan Shafer, Walter
Ray Williams Jr., Jason Sterner,
and supplemental pick Tom
Hess. Looks like another strong
team; I wonder why no one has
picked them up. You have to
wonder if Rash is hard to work
with considering he was also
passed over in the selection
process based on resume to
join Team USA last week.
Anyway, I’m looking
forward to seeing these teams’
strategy and working together
in the team competition. Will
they help each other out during
Ohh, and if any of you have
been missing Jackie Bowling,
the rumor from a very reliable
source is that she will be
joining iab TV (IABowling on
in Detroit.
DAUGHERTY WINS
Continued from Page 1
television average by 88 pins in
the process.
After sneaking into the
stepladder finals in fourth position
by four pins over Rhino
Page of Dade City, Fla., Daugherty
ruined Jason Sterner’s
television debut, eliminating
the McDonough, Ga., resident,
199-177. He then romped past
Australian two-handed star
Jason Belmonte, 256-187, and
threw a critical double in the
fifth and sixth frames of the
title match to defeat Palermaa,
getting help from the Finnish
two-handed star when he had
consecutive opens in the sixth
and seventh frames.
Ironically, Daugherty put
together the best performance
of his professional career while
glancing at a very large “100”
in a graphic above the lanes
promoting “Bowlers Journal
100th Anniversary.”
“I want to thank Bowlers
Journal for reminding me all
day of my 100 game,” Daugherty
said with a grin at the
conclusion of the match.
While all four finalists use
power techniques that allow
them to generate significant
hooking power, the key was
slower ball speed, a result of
Daugherty not using his thumb
in his delivery.
“The difference between
me and the two-handers is
my ball speed,” Daugherty
said. “They throw it 100 miles
per hour, so I can actually do
something they can’t and that’s
a slow hook. I knew if I could
get by Sterner, I’d have a good
chance. I knew (Belmonte and
Palermaa) weren’t going to
bowl anything. They might say
they threw some bad shots,
but I didn’t think either one of
them could shoot 200 because
of their ball reactions.
“They couldn’t get inside
as far as I was because of
their ball speed. Their ball
would never hook from there,”
Daugherty added. “As soon as
Belmo tried to move in just a
little, he missed the headpin. It
was easy for me to do, too, but
on my good shots, I could get
the ball to make the turn. They
couldn’t do that.”
Daugherty admitted he was
nervous in making his second
“There was a lot of nerves
going on the first game. The
three-bagger kinda calmed me
down, but leaving that 3-6-9-10
in the first frame was unnerving.
I didn’t want to start with
an open,” he said after successfully
converting the difficult
spare. “That’s all I thought
about after making the show:
not starting with an open and
that’s not the spare you want to
shoot at in the first frame.”
Daugherty said he was
thrilled to win his first PBA
Tour title because it made him
eligible to bowl in the 2013 PBA
Tournament of Champions under
revised eligibility rules that will
only allow PBA Tour champions
to enter. He had bowled in the
TOC previously under rules
that allowed PBA Regional title
winners to participate.
“I was so disappointed when
they changed the TOC criteria,”
Daugherty said. “I made a lot of
money in that tournament the past
two years, but now I’m back.”
