Page 2 | Thursday, January 17, 2013 | THE BOWLING NEWS Random Thoughts I saw a fantastic and inspiring story on the NBC Today show last week. It was on a high school student from Iowa City who launched a twitter account focused solely on sending positive messages. What a novel concept huh? Jeremiah Anthony started the account to fight back against bullying, and specifically internetbullying. His thought is that “it’s easier to find the nice things in people, instead of the bad things.” And I couldn’t agree more. I absolutely loved the story, and the response from the kids at the school has been overwhelmingly positive and it’s quite possibly making a difference. Basically he just tweets real, truthful, positive comments to his schoolmates. It’s as simple as that, and who doesn’t like a little compliment to start off their day. He’s recruited several other friends, and they have started the twitter handle, @westhighbros. Go ahead and follow them, @ theBowlingNewsNet does. It’s a real pay-it-forward story, and one that we bowlers could use as well. He interviews super-coach Rick Benoit to discuss his brother Bob’s remarkable 300 game in the title match of the 1988 Quaker State Open. I remember that 300 game vividly. I lived to watch the PBA on Saturday afternoons and this was a great one. I watched the show with Brad Ellis at his parent’s house, and I have always regarded that as one of the best games I’ve ever seen. Rick gives some very interesting background on Bob’s game and how it evolved into helping him become a great champion. Now we need to interview Pete McCordic to tell us about his TV 300. Not the best game I’ve ever seen, but easily the most exciting and dramatic. Never have I seen a man shake so much, makes me smile just thinking about how great that moment was. Bowling Parts, Inc. Koivuniemi captured two international tournaments in the month. The first win was the Round 1 Japan Cup, a 268-164 decision over Yoshihiro Kaji, Japan. The rack came down on the ball I was using in the third frame of the first game, damaged it and I had to change balls. So I pulled out the Blue Ultra Zone, made a small adjustment to the right and stayed there all night. The lanes were perfect for me. When I got done all I could think about was that it took me 20 years to do it. What ball did you throw? Brunswick Blue Ultra Zone, I have thrown all of my honor scores with Zone balls. I bought this ball off the internet because it’s not made anymore. Who drills your balls? What is your all-time high average? 221 last year. How long have you been bowling? I started when I was 8 yrs-old, my dad got me started. I bowled until I was about 24 then quit for about four years. I am now back and averaging about 215-220. My cousin is Ernest Harwell III and has over 80 sanctioned 300 games. He used to be my main coach and taught how to properly throw the ball. Most memorable bowling moment? It has to be this series. When I realized I had the 800 in the 9th frame I had to take a moment just to let it sink in. I have had lots of close calls and to finally shoot 800 was wonderful. What lessons has the game taught you? I would say patience. As a younger kid I would get angry, but as I have gotten older I understand that being patient and staying focused works best. Wanda Parker This week’s high female is Wanda Parker who shot 236- 246-280 for a 762 series in the Tuesday High Rollers league at AMF Showplace Garland Lanes. Wanda says she has a new breath of life with bowling and still loves the sport. Where were you born? Toledo, OH where they used to have a tour stop. I moved to Texas in 1990. Graduated from College, and moved to Texas. We have much better weather here. What ball did you throw? The Storm IQ Tour. I can’t put it down, I have been throwing it everywhere since October. It’s a very versatile ball. Thoughts on the big series? I got some new equipment. I’ve changed up my arsenal and found some balls that are more conducive to my game. I moved away from Storm equipment a few years ago, but my teammate convinced me to get that ball. What is your all-time favorite movie? Major League it is a classic sports movie. I also like The Program. What is your favorite restaurant? McDonalds, how scary is that! Where did you take your best vacation? LA. I got to go to the Staples and the old Forum. We didn’t get to go to a game but got to hangout outside, it was playoff season. What is your favorite song of all time? Anita Baker is my favorite musician. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Anything worth having is worth the work. That is something I have always heard from the adults I grew up around. If you were the commissioner of all things bowling for a day what would you change? The format of the US Open. I would like to make it more fair for amateurs. It would level the playing field a little bit. Favorite hobby besides bowling? Just listening to music, all different kinds. I have XM radio and just like to listen to everything.
