So, I thought it was a great opportunity to open another center without the cost of building a new one. Our plans are to put in laser tag and have the facility geared towards a family entertainment center so there is something to do for everyone in the family,” said Billy Joe Cathey, Managing Partner. It took a lot of hard work to get the center cleaned up and operational as it had sat idle for some time under bank ownership. Red Bird bowlers volunteered their time and skills to help with the renovations such as Michael Brackney - electrical, Patrick Sliger - plumbing, Jimmy Travnicek - a/c, Rodney Brooks – phone tech, and Clifton Carrington - doors. All Star Bowl will start short season and winter leagues this week and expect to have leagues five nights a week. The Cathey’s also plan to grow their youth program as well as getting the high school bowling program back at the center. “I would like to invite everyone to come out and check us out. We will start hosting tournaments to get the good bowlers in this area involved in bowling again,” said Billy Joe. Billy Joe did have one more surprise up his sleeve on Saturday as he proposed to longtime girlfriend Lauren Daniel during the Grand Opening festivities, and yes she accepted. “I’m proud of all their hard work and their excitement. I’m proud for my family. We had a lot of people donating their time and we can’t thank them enough,” said owner Lois Cathey of Billy Joe and Lauren. Billy Joe would like to thank Jeff, Jeffrey and Jennifer for keeping Red Bird going; Rick and Patti Holloway for their endless hours of help; all of the staff at All Star Bowl and my mom, Lois, for making it possible. Lusk catching bowling fever 5-yr old AJ Lusk of San Antonio looks to be a bowling prodigy in the making. The right-handed kindergartner started bowling a year ago after having a birthday party at BRC Thousand Oaks, and his love for the game took off from there. BJ International magazine celebrates 100 years CHICAGO - Bowlers Journal International (BJI), the longestrunning sports magazine in America, is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2013. “We have been looking forward to 2013 for quite some time,” said Luby Publishing Inc. President Keith Hamilton. “This is a special time for the magazine and the industry.” Hamilton noted that BJI’s turning 100 is a great tribute to bowling: “One industry has supported one magazine through two World Wars, a Great Depression, several recessions and 9/11. This is a story that we want to tell to the mainstream media - to spotlight bowling in a positive and loyal light.” As part of the celebration, each issue will contain a feature of historical significance, leading up to the actual anniversary issue in November 2013.
