Stefanie Nation, and Chris
they averaged 237 per person,
more than four pins higher
a 245 average.
In second place was Mike
Freshman throws first 300
By Kayla Endicott, Staff Writer
Keith Thomas Jr. is a freshman
at North Crowley High
School. When asked about the
changes between high school
and middle school he replied
“High school has a lot more
school work and classes. The
way they handle athletics is
also different. All around, it’s
just more work”. Keith doesn’t
bowl for high school because
he has league Saturday mornings.
He holds a 226 average
and after 3 years of bowling,
Keith threw his first 300. “It
was October 13, 2012. I was
at Saturday morning league at
Cityview Lanes and everybody
in the alley just stopped and
watched me. I was nervous and
excited I guess. Plus a little
pressured cause everybody was
counting on me” he stated. His
highest game prior to bowling
his 300, was a 296. “I wanted
to finally shoot my 300 cause
I’ve came close so many times
before. Once I start getting
closer to finishing the game,
anxiety picks up and I begin to
WTBA President and CEO
Kevin Dornberger said. “We
look forward to continuing the
great partnerships we have
developed over the past two
years while also welcoming in
new events in 2013.”
The first event on the
2013 schedule is currently in
progress in Las Vegas, United
States, at the PBA World
Championship. As a major on
the schedule, the event will
shake a little.”
Keith enjoys throwing Storm
equipment. “I love all my bowling
balls, but if I had to choose
my favorite, I would have to
say it’s my Crossroad.” If given
the opportunity, he would like
to bowl for college but Keith is
also a football player. “I still
have a long life ahead of me. I
don’t want to make any decisions
yet on which road I‘m
going to take.” For now, you
can catch Keith on the fields at
school and the bowling alley
on the weekends.
By Leisha Murr
Ahh… the holidays are
officially upon us. With
Thanksgiving this week and
Christmas just a few weeks
away, it always reminds me to
be thankful. I try to be grateful
and say Thank You every day,
but the holidays always remind
me of the people and things I
have to be thankful for.
One of the first things
most people will say they are
thankful for is their health.
I’m not the healthiest person
in the world, but I am glad
that I’m healthy enough to do
the things I enjoy like bowling
and playing softball. We just
finished another softball season
and I’m grateful to have made it
through with great weather and
without any injuries. Every year
I get reminded that I’m getting
too old to keep playing ball, but
sadly I’m still one of the youngest
on my team so they won’t
let me use that excuse to quit
playing. And, I really do still
enjoy it most of the time. We
play teams half our ages and
still managed to go undefeated
again this session.
The next thing I am always
thankful for is my family. First
of all, they put up with me and
I’m not sure everyone’s family
would. All of my life, they have
always been encouraging and
supportive of me in everything
I do. They accept me; the good,
the bad and even the ugly
sometimes. And they forgive
me for mistakes I’ve made and
love me through it all. We can
all lean on each other in my
family and it makes all things
in life a little easier.
I’m also very thankful for
my bowling family. It always
warms my heart to see how
the bowling community comes
together like a family in times
of loss or need. I’ve said this
before about how generous
bowlers are when it comes to
raising money for charities like
the diabetes foundation, breast
and other cancer research,
veterans, etc., but we are also
generous when it comes to
helping each other. In this
extended family, we may not all
know each other, but we know
someone who knows the person
everyone is trying to help.
Families are a large part of
the bowling community. How
many children start bowling
because their father bowls or
their grandmother bowls? I
know my siblings and I started
because our mother bowled
every week. It’s great that
bowling is a sport that you can
participate in a league with
your entire family. You can be
on a team with your children,
parents, and even grandparents
and still be competitive. It’s
very rare that I find someone
who is really into bowling who
doesn’t have someone else in
their family who is or was a
bowler. I notice it in the Looking
Back section of the paper
every week, one generation of
a family can be in the 20 years
ago and their child will show
up in the 10 years ago section.
It’s really great to see.
Speaking of sections in the
paper, has anyone else noticed
how short the Honor Roll has
gotten? We haven’t had that
many centers in the metroplex
shut down recently, but there are
just fewer who are getting the
paper each week. I had a bowler
in my league talking to me
about this last week. He finally
bowled another honor score, but
because it was at another center
that wasn’t taking the paper it
won’t get printed for him to be
able to keep in his memorabilia
or scrapbook. So, congrats to Bill
Criss for bowling a 299 game at
Cityview a few weeks ago. It’s
really not that expensive for a
center to keep The Bowling News
coming in the building each
week. It’s a small price to pay to
be able to showcase your league
bowlers, give them the opportunity
to know what tournaments
and other things are going on
around the metroplex, and read
my wisdom (or nonsense) each
week.
And finally, I’m thankful
to Tony, Genie, and the rest of
The Bowing News family for
giving me the opportunity to
share a part of myself each
week. Thank you all for
continuing to read each week
and I hope you enjoy Last Call!
Dick Smith
passes away
SASBA Hall of Famer
and long-time DFW bowling
legend, Dick Smith
passed away on Friday
November 9th after a long
battle with cancer. He was
71 yrs-old.
Smith was an eight-time
SASBA champion who is
20th on the all-time earnings
list with over $62,000.
He is remembered by his
bowling friends as an
extremely kind man who
always had a smile on his
face. His bowling ball will
always be remembered as
having the power to knock
more pins than it was
supposed to, earning him
several nicknames over the
years for his penchant for
the sloppy strike.
He is survived by
his wife Jan, children,
grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren
He was buried at the
Acton Cemetery in Grandbury,
TX on Nov. 12th.
Joy McGregor passes away
Joy McGregor, wife of Hall
of Famer Bob McGregor, lost
her 18-month battle with
cancer on Tuesday November
13th and went home to her
Lord and Savior.
She is survived by her loving
husband, Bob; daughters,
Kelly Parker, Ryan Asprion
and husband Rene, Cory
Postema and husband Andy;
brother, Gene Arnold and wife
Sherry; grandsons, Zachariah
and Noah Postema, Blake and
Nickolas Parker, Nolan and
Dalton Asprion.
The memorial service was
held Monday November 19th at
10 a.m. at Glory of Zion Church
in Corinth, TX.
From Bob: Joy hoped that
in lieu of flowers you would
consider a gift that we would
forward to the Mango Tree
Church in Cambodia. It’s
Joy McGregor
named that because its mem- started the church in a small,
out-of-the-way village. Joy
jumped in and began supporting
the group with money to
buy food (they had very little
during the dry season) and to
start construction at $0.10 per
brick on a small church building.
The foundation and walls
are in, and I believe they (the
members) are now working on
the roof and interior as they
receive funds. It’s nothing like
the church buildings we see
Joy and grandson Nolan.
bers have been meeting under
a mango tree for many months.
We found out about it not long
ago from our Cambodian next
door neighbor whose nephew
every day, but it will be a wonderful
gathering place for the
villagers. If this appeals to you,
please make out your check to
Glory of Zion international and
on the “for” or “subject” line of
the check be sure to write “Joy
McGregor Memorial Fund.”
Storm National Mixed Championships comes to a close
RENO, Nev. — The 2012
Storm National Mixed Championships
ended in dramatic
fashion as new leaders emerged
in 10 divisions at the National
Bowling Stadium during the
tournament's final weekend.
Jackie Wyckoff of Campbell,
Calif., led the way as she
captured the top spot in three
events, while Renee Steele of
Carson City, Nev., and John
Bertolina of Henderson, Nev.,
each grabbed the lead in two
events. All standings are
considered unofficial until final
verifications are made.
Wyckoff, a Bowling Writers
Association of America board
member, had success at the
Stadium earlier in the year as
she helped Coefficient of Friction
of Palo Alto, Calif., claim
the Scratch Team title at the
United States Bowling Congress
Women's Championships.
In her return visit to the
one-of-a-kind Stadium, Wyckoff
rolled games of 269, 231 and
225 for a 725 series to lead
Anthony Simonsen outscored
the competition again last week
at Plano Super Bowl with a dual
She also teamed up with Steve
Corsaro of Tracy, Calif., to
record a 1,352 combined score
to take over the lead in Mixed
Doubles Scratch.
Steele already had made a
name for herself at the 2012
National Mixed Championships
by rolling an 816 series and
taking the lead in three events
when she competed two weeks
earlier. In her second effort at
the "Taj Mahal of Tenpins,"
Steele grabbed the top spot in
All-Events Women's Scratch
with 2,043 as well as the lead
in the Six-Game Scratch Singles
event with 1,462.
Steele ended the 2012 tournament
leading four events.
She also led Open Singles
Women's Scratch and Handicap
PIN POINTS
TO PONDER
By CHUCK PEZZANO
One of the greatest feats in
bowling history unfolded more
than 50 years ago.
It was the TV winning
streak piled up by the late
Lou Campi of Dumont, N.J.,
a member of the ABC Hall of
Fame and half a dozen other
Halls. Campi rolled with the
top teams, won the national
doubles with Andy Varipapa,
and again with Lindy Faragalli,
and more than 100 assorted
titles. He gained special
attention as "Wrongfoot Lou"
because he finished on his
right foot even though he was
a righty, and according to the
books, that's the wrong foot.
A mason by trade/ Campi
was strong physically, but even
stronger mentally, and early
acquired the reputation as one
of the best clutch bowlers in
the game. That, and his pride
and confidence in his ability,
made him an almost perfect
performer for TV. Prior to
the streak he had established
himself as an outstanding TV
performer, winning a couple
of cars, pretty fair cash for the
times, and all kinds of merchandise.
He made constant TV
appearances across the country.
No score or record bothered
him, and he never worried
about how high scores might
be. He often said, "If a man
bowled it, a man can beat it."
The TV shows were aired
live from New York City when
Campi was 52. Two years later
Paul Fleming rocketed to the
top of the honor roll last week at
Cowtown Bowling Palace with a
thundering 268-299-216 = 783 Ft
Campi made history when he
won the first official tourney
conducted by the PBA.
The show was called, "East
for 13 weeks. The format was
simple. A list of bowlers from
the East and another of bowlers
from the west was compiled,
and when a bowler lost he
would be replaced the following
week by the next man on
the list. The winner would
Ed Kawolics, Buzz Fazio, Dick
That completed the 13 week
run. But the producer and announcer,
Lou Marks, the owner
of the host center, Nick Gianos
of Bowlmor Recreation, and
the main sponsor, Kitchens of
Sara Lee, all knew they had a
big hit, and extended the show.
TRIBUTE PATCH, SILENT
AUCTION RAISE MORE THAN
$10,000 FOR TONY REYES’
FAMILY
The Tony Reyes tribute
patch program, and a silent
auction conducted during the
GEICO PBA World Series of
Bowling IV in Las Vegas has
generated more than $10,000
thus far to benefit the family
of the fallen PBA Tour champion
who died on Sept. 28 of
injuries sustained in a traffic
accident near his northern
California home.
Sales of “TR” emblems,
in black and silver in honor
of Reyes’ favorite team – the
Oakland Raiders, has generated
nearly $4,000 to date. The
Tristan Bridgewater recorded
a top-notch 268-290-192 = 750
Red Bird Men’s league series to
patches are available for $5
each from the PBA office (visit
The silent auction, which
included a number of autographed
jerseys donated by
PBA Tour players, bowling
balls, a wine collection, an
autographed copy of the “50
Greatest PBA Players” and more
raised an additional $6,565 for
the Reyes family.
While Reyes was on the
minds of many PBA players
and PBA staff members during
the World Series, the most
touching moment came at the
end of competition when a
number of his long-time friends
walked down the lanes to
autograph a special masking
unit designed in Reyes’ honor.
The masking unit will be
donated to Reyes’ home center,
RECORD-SETTING PBA ALL
REGIONS TITLE IN LAS
VEGAS
Amateur George Gohagan
III of Roswell, Ga., defeated
former PBA Women’s Series
champion Shannon Pluhowsky
of Kettering, Ohio, in a one-ball
sudden death roll-off, 10-9, that
concluded a record-setting PBA
All Regions South Point Open
at South Point Bowling Center
in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov.
10.
The Gohagan-Pluhowsky
roll-off followed a 224-224 tie.
After each player threw three
matching strikes, Gohagan
broke the tie for the win.
But there was a great deal of
additional drama leading up to
the title match.
Gohagan, who earned
$3,500, defeated England’s Dom
Barrett, 300-298, in a nailbiting
semifinal round match
when Barrett left a pocket 7-10,
ending a personal string of 32
consecutive strikes that began
in the Round of 8. Pluhowsky
ousted Tom Daugherty of
Wesley Chapel, Fla., 247-236, in
the other semifinal match.
In the Round of 8, Barrett
won his best-of-three-game
match against Kyle Troup
of Taylorsville, N.C., 2-0, by
winning an 11-ball roll-off after
they tied at 280-280 in game
two. Both players threw 10
strikes in a row before Troup
left a pin standing on his 11th
attempt while Barrett threw his
11th strike.
In the Round of 16, Gohagan
and amateur Ron Nelson Jr.
of Bridgeview, Ill., battled to a
300-300 tie in the second game
of their best-of-five match,
and each then threw three
more strikes in the roll-off
before Gohagan’s fourth strike
eliminated Nelson’s sevencount.
Gohagan went on to win
the contest, 3-2, with a 268-253
win in game five.
In a companion event held
in conjunction with the GEICO
PBA World Series of Bowling
IV, amateur Adam Ishman
of Las Vegas and Barrett
defeated amateur Raul Rosales
of El Monte, Calif. and Michael
Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz.,
502-459, to win the $4,000 top
prize in the PBA West Region
Member/Non-Member Doubles
on Sunday, Nov. 11.
The All Regions South Point
Open drew an international
field of 157 competitors while
the Member/Non-Member
Doubles drew a field of 66
teams. Both events were
conducted in conjunction with
the GEICO PBA World Series of
the championship round to win
the PBA South Region Gastonia
Pappas’ Liberty Lanes Sunday.
Baker, a three-time South
Just Paying
Attention
Attention By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
According to PBA Commissioner
Tom Clark, many more
have been watching the PBA’s
World Series of Bowling online.
For the second straight year,
viewership is up 60% over the
previous year. A pretty good
increase for a sports league
whose internet presence a national
magazine recently called
“perhaps a decade ahead of its
time.” Unfortunately, this has
not necessarily translated into
any new outside-the-industry
advertisers. But the PBA’s new
marketing firm, Shamrock
Sports and Entertainment,
Clark adds, “is aggressive and
seems good things are on the
horizon.”
The PBA’s internet presence
also means player interaction
with fans during competition
is at an all-time high, which is
a carry-over from last season.
The 21 st century verbs Facebooking
and Tweeting are very
much known to PBA fans who
want to follow block-by-block
or even game-by-game action
of their favorites. It’s hard to
find a top pro who doesn’t
have a fan page. One of the
fun things about watching PBA
XtraFrame is listening to near
instantaneous responses of
Kevin Roberts racked up
a rousing 257-257-278 = 792
Terri Trefger, form the High
Billy Fontenot’s near perfect
honors while George Calloway
took runner-up honors with a
298 game.
Facebook postings by Mike J.
Laneside, Jason ‘The Bowling
Guy’ Thomas, or insidebowling.com’s
Mike Flanagan. One
that sticks out was a posting
a couple of years ago from the
Ukraine. Really, the Ukraine?
True. Wouldn’t have believed
it myself if I was not sitting
next to Mike J. describing a
PBA Midwest Regional finals
at the time. I don’t think you’ll
see Tony Romo answering fans
Facebook questions on his
latest, uh, completion, yeah,
that’s it.
You’ve also noticed a few
new wrinkles on XtraFrame
this year. The high, wide-angle
camera was showing six pairs
at a time at the WSOB. The cutaways
to the in-house standing
boards seen are clearer than
ever before. Not sure if they are
using newer cameras or what,
but it looks good on screen.
Since Day one of the Chris
Peters era, technology has
been at the forefront, however,
the PBA may still be ten years
ahead of its time.
Here’s another pleasant surprise
form this year’s WSOB.
If anyone could pinch-hit for
Mike J, it’s guest commentator
John Petraglia, Jr. He sat in the
booth during the last two U.S.
Opens with the guys and really
sounds like he has spent some
time behind a microphone. He’s
got great voice presence, can
go from one topic to another
with ease while chatting with
either bowlers or broadcasters.
Mike Flanagan also sounded
very good with Mike J. and
Petraglia, Jr. While dropping in
upon his arrival at the WSOB
on XtraFrame, ESPN analyst
Randy Pedersen dubbed them,
“Mike and Mike,” the same
name as the ESPN Radio morning
show tandem, Mike Golic
and Mike Greenberg. And yes,
it was meant in a good way.
The PBA World Championship
finals look promising with
numerous story angles. Rhino
Page spent the summer practicing
bowling rather than on the
golf course, making a huge run
in the last two rounds of match
play to qualify fourth. Dan
MacLelland has been knocking
on the door for the last three
years after making the USBC
Masters finals and a snagging
a gold medal in the 2011
PABCON Masters. After not
making a show in three years,
PBA Hall of Famer Parker
Bohn III is four wins from one
of two major titles not on his
resume’. The top two seeds,
Jason Belmonte and Sean
Rash, undoubtedly the Jack
and Arnie or Earl and Mark of
this generation, continue their
rivalry into another season.
Oh, and by the way, if you are
not sure who Jack and Arnie
are, just Google ‘jack and arnie
golf.” I don’t have the space to
explain it.
USA Today sportswriter
Gary Mihoces wrote a half
page article on the new PBA
League appearing in the
Tuesday November 8 issue. OK
what gives? I’d be willing to
put money, that this is the first
half-page bowling article in
the USA Today sports section
since Kulick’s legendary 2010
ToC win. Remember, this is
the same paper that proudly
carried round-by-round standings
of PBA national tour
events until the late 90s. Not to
mention, another sportswriter
at the time later left that paper
and joined an organization in a
management position. He often
wrote columns suggesting the
PBA try a few different things.
You know him today as PBA
Commissioner Tom Clark. That
USA Today piece is the type of
impact advertising cannot buy.
Hard to believe, but there
was a second bowling story appearing
in a major daily newspaper
on Wednesday November
8th. In case you missed it, and
chances are you probably did,
former USBC writer Gianmarc
Manzione penned a story about
the New York City bowling
hustler scene in the New York
Times. That New York Times?
Yeppers. Even with all the Hurricane
Sandy and post-election
coverage, the story appeared
in the sports section and is
scheduled to be part of a book
Manzione is preparing. The
topic on the surface looks to be
a bowling story, but really is a
look at a slice of society from
that time. Almost sounds like
something you’d see Sunday
night on AMC after Mad Men,
doesn’t it?
