et is niet mogelijk om in het bestek
van dit nummer van Suralco
Magazine alle plaatsnamen te bespreken.
We moeten ons daarom
beperken tot de belangrijkste plaatsen of
tot de plaatsen die door hun naam typerend
zijn voor de naamgeving van plaatsen
in Suriname. En we zullen dit
districtsgewijs doen.
We beginnen met het district Marowijne.

Other Name-Places in Suriname

t is not possible to discuss all name
places within the scope of this edition
of Suralco Magazine. We should therefore
limit ourselves to the most important
places or places that because of
their names are typical for the nomenclature
in Suriname. This we shall do
district by district.
We start with Marowijne. Close to
the mouth of the Marowijne River there
are the two Indian villages: Christiaan

Christiaan - kondre en Langaman - kondre.
Vroeger was er op die plek een
militaire post die in 1842 verlaten werd.
Enkele decennia later, besloten twee
broers, Christiaan en Langaman, om
daar een nederzetting te vestigen. Die
nederzettingen bestaan nu nog
en zijn genoemd naar de stichters van
die dorpen, Christiaan - kondre en
Langaman- kondre. Iets verder naar de
monding toe vinden we Galibi, maar
over het algemeen worden deze beide
Kondre and Langaman Kondre. In
the past a military post used to be
there, which was abandoned in 1842.
Some decades later, two brothers,
Christiaan and Langaman, decided to
establish settlements there and those
settlements still exist and were named
Christiaan Kondre and Langaman
Kondre after the founders of those
villages. Some further to the mouth we
find Galibi, but the two earlier
mentioned places are generally also
dorpen ook aangegeven als Galibi. Hier
hebben we dus het voorbeeld van
Indiaanse dorpen die geen Indiaanse
naam hebben maar die genoemd zijn
naar de stichters van het dorp. Kondre
daarachter is een Sranan woord voor
dorp of land.
Moengo is een plaats aan de Cottica -
rivier waar de Surinaamsche Bauxite
Maatschappij (thans Suralco) in 1916
een dorp stichtte voor de ontginning
van bauxiet.

Moengo is a place along the Cottica
where the Surinam Bauxite Company
(now Suralco) established a village in
1916 for the mining of bauxite.
