Thorarica bleef niet lang de hoofdstad
van het land. In 1650, bij de stichting
van de kolonie Suriname, was voor de
bescherming van de plantages een fort
aangelegd aan de linkeroever van de
benedenloop van de Surinamerivier. Dit
fort kreeg de naam van fort Willoughby,
naar de stichter en toenmalige eigenaar
van de kolonie Suriname. De gouverneur,
die ook opperbevelhebber was
van de troepen, vestigde zich in 1665 in
de nabijheid van het fort op de plaats
waar nog steeds het paleis van de
president van het land staat. Daardoor
ontstond tegen het fort aan het stadje
Paramaribo, dat de nieuwe hoofdstad
werd van het land. En dat tot vandaag
nog de hoofdstad is.

Over de oorsprong van de naam
Paramaribo is er veel onduidelijkheid.
Er is zelfs een boekje geschreven over
de naam Paramaribo, waarbij de auteur
tot 23 mogelijke afleidingen komt,
vrijwel alle van Indiaanse oorsprong.
Eén van de mogelijkheden is dat de
naam afgeleid is van Parmurbo, hetgeen
betekent 'Bloemenstad'. Een andere
mogelijke afleiding is van Panaribo, wat
betekent 'Stad van de Vrienden'. De
meest waarschijnlijke afleiding lijkt
ons echter de afleiding van Paramoeroebo.
Paramoeroe is het Indiaans
woord voor regenboog en Paramoeroe
was ook de oorspronkelijke Indiaanse
naam van de Sommelsdijkse kreek.

Paramaribo was even published, in
which the author comes to 23 possible
derivations, almost all of Indian origin.
One of the possibilities is that the
name was derived from Parmurbo,
which means, 'Flower City.' Another
possible derivation is from Panaribo,
which means 'City of the Friends.'
However, we think the most likely derivation
comes from Paramoeroebo.
Paramoeroe is the Indian word for rainbow
and Paramoeroe was also the original
Indian name of the Sommelsdijkse
Creek. In the Indian language 'Bo'
means Village or Place.

'Bo' betekent in het Indiaans dorp of
plaats. Paramoeroebo is dus het dorp of
de plaats bij de Paramoeroe. Door verschrijvingen
in de loop der tijden is
Paramoeroebo geworden tot Paramaribo,
de huidige naam van de hoofdstad
van Suriname. Paramaribo betekent dus
volgens deze laatste afleiding 'Stad
bij de regenboog'.

Dat men het in het verleden niet altijd
zo nauw nam met de schrijfwijze van
plaatsnamen en riviernamen blijkt onder
meer uit een geschrift van Westhuysen
over de verovering van Paramaribo in
1667, welk geschrift de titel kreeg van:

So Paramoeroebo is the village or place
near the Paramoeroe. Through errors
in writing in the course of time Paramoeroebo
became Paramaribo, the
present name of the capital of Suriname.
So according to this derivation
Paramaribo means: 'City near the
Rainbow.'

about the spelling of place-names and
names of rivers is obvious among other
things from a document of Westhuysen
about the conquest of Paramaribo in
1667, which document got the tittle of:
