n dit hoofdstuk willen we aandacht
schenken aan de namen van het land
Suriname en zijn hoofdstad Paramaribo.
De naam van het land Suriname is
afgeleid van de rivier Suriname, omdat
langs deze rivier de eerste plantages
werden aangelegd en het gebied langs
deze rivier het eerst bewoond werd. Voor
de afleiding van het woord Suriname wil
ik verwijzen naar het hoofdstuk over de
rivieren, waar ook de Surinamerivier
besproken wordt. Men heeft weleens

The Names Suriname and Paramaribo
beweerd dat de naam is afgeleid van
Surrey-ham, maar deze afleiding stoelde
slechts op het feit dat de graaf van
Surrey ooit eigenaar was van Suriname.
Maar deze afleiding is niet juist, omdat
de naam Suriname toen reeds bestond.
Toen in 1662 het land door de Engelse
koning Karel II geschonken werd aan
Willoughby, kreeg het de officiële naam
van Willoughby-land. Toen in 1667 de
