De hoofdplaats van het district
Commewijne is Nieuw Amsterdam.
Vroeger was Frederiksdorp, aan de
rechteroever van de Commewijnerivier,
de hoofdplaats. In 1907 werd besloten
de zetel van de districtscommissaris
te verplaatsen naar Nieuw Amsterdam,
dat toen de hoofdplaats van het district
Commewijne werd. De districtscommissaris
nam zijn intrek in de voormalige
commandeurswoning van het fort.
Nieuw Amsterdam is namelijk aangelegd
The capital of the Commewijne district
is Nieuw Amsterdam. Formerly
Frederiksdorp on the right bank of the
Commewijne River was the capital of the
district. In 1907 it was decided to move
the seat of the district commissioner
to Nieuw Amsterdam, which then
became the capital of the Commewijne
district. The district commissioner took
up residence in the former commander's
house of that fort. Nieuw Amsterdam
was built as a fort for the defense of
the plantations along the Suriname and
Commewijne River. It was to prevent
hostile ships from entering those rivers.
It was built as a fort in the period
between 1734 and 1747 and got the
name Nieuw Amsterdam after the capital
6
van Nederland. Dit is niet zo verwonderlijk
als we weten dat Amsterdam toen
grote commerciële belangen had in
Suriname.
Nieuw Amsterdam is al lang geen echt
fort meer, hoewel het in de jaren van de
Tweede Wereldoorlog nog dienst heeft
gedaan als fort. Woningen en barakken
uit die tijd zijn nog altijd te vinden in het
plaatsje Nieuw Amsterdam. In de jaren
'60 van de 20ste eeuw werd rond het fort
Nieuw Amsterdam ook opgericht de
'Stichting Openlucht Museum Nieuw
Amsterdam'; het museum is voor het
publiek toegankelijk.
Verder naar het westen krijgen we het
stadsdistrict Paramaribo, dat vroeger,
zo'n 60 jaar geleden, nog maar acht
of The Netherlands. This is no surprise if
we know that Amsterdam then had great
commercial interests in Suriname.
For quite a long time Nieuw Amsterdam
is not a real fort anymore, although
it still served as a fort in the years of
the Second World War. Dwellings and
barracks from that time can still be
found in the place Nieuw Amsterdam.
In the sixties of the 20th century 'the
Foundation Open-air Museum Nieuw
Amsterdam' was also founded, which
museum is open to the public.
Further to the west we get the
Paramaribo district, which in the past,
some 60 years ago, was only eight
square kilometers large and then
vierkante kilometer groot was en toen
nog niet aan zee grensde. Twintig jaar
geleden werd er een nieuwe indeling van
de districten gemaakt. Paramaribo werd
toen heel erg vergroot en loopt nu door
tot aan de Atlantische Oceaan. Paramaribo
is de grootste bevolkingsnederzetting
van Suriname en meer dan de
helft van de totale bevolking van
Suriname woont nu in Paramaribo. Over
de naam Paramaribo werd al eerder, in
hoofdstuk 1, gesproken.
Ten zuiden en ten westen van
Paramaribo vinden we het district
Wanica. Dat is het in de jaren '80
nieuw ingestelde district. Het district
Wanica werd om verschillende redenen
zo genoemd. In de eerste plaats
De politiepost te Nieuw Amsterdam
The police post at Nieuw Amsterdam
did not border on the sea yet. Twenty
years ago a new division of the districts
was made. Paramaribo was then
enlarged very much and now runs up
to the Atlantic Ocean. Paramaribo is
the largest settlement of people of
Suriname and more than half of the
population of Suriname now lives in
Paramaribo. We already discussed the
name Paramaribo earlier and we therefore
want to refer to Chapter 1.
South and west of Paramaribo we find
the Wanica district. That is the newly
in the eighties established district. The
Wanica district was named that way,
because of several reasons. In the first
