FUEL AGENTS HOLD
CONVENTION AT CHATTANOOGA.
The third annual convention of the International
Railway Fuel Association was held at Chattanooga,
Tenn., during the fortnight and elected
the following officers for the ensuing year: President,
T. Duff Smith, fuel agent Grand Trunk Pacific
railway. Winnipeg, Can.; first vice president,
D. Meadows, master mechanic Michigan Central
railroad, St. Thomas. Ont.; second vice president,
J. H. Hibben, fuel agent M., K. & T. Ry., Parsons,
Kan.; secretary-treasurer, D. B. Sebastian, fuel
agent Rock Island lines, Chicago. Executive
committee, W. C. Hayes, superintendent locomotive
operation, Erie railroad. New York; Robert
Collett. road foreman of engines, Frisco lines;
J. McManamy, road foreman of engines, Pere
Marquette railroad, Grand Rapids, Mich.: R.
Emerson, engineer track economies. A., T. & S. F.
Ry.. Topeka, Kan.
The convention adopted resolutions, and sent
messages to Vice President James S. Sherman of
the United States and to Champ Clark, speaker
of the House of Representatives, urging the passage
of the Foss bill (H. B. 5139) now before
Congress and providing for arbitration in labor
disputes.
The papers presented and discussed at the convention
were all of direct interest to the coal
trade and the operators in attendance were well
repaid. The discussion was mainly along new
and advanced lines and may be said to represent
that which is the most modern, most vital and
most momentous in the great coal industry.
A NEW VENTILATING DEVICE.
The necessity for pure air is being more fully
and more widely recognized every day.
There is, therefore, no need
for the manufacturers of ventilating
devices to "create a
demand"—it already exists—
and their problem is simply
to convince their clientele
that they are prepared to
meet this demand in a manner
calculated to give best
results with minimum expense.
The new and unique ventil-

geared reversing mechanism, rod, bearing and
handle, and is furnished complete as illustrated
Fig. 1, ready lor connection to plug or ordinary
lamp socket.
Fig. 2 illustrates
outfit adjusted for
supplying fresh outdoor
air.
The ingenious reversing
mechanism
makes it possible to
discharge the air
straight ahead, upward
toward the ceiling,
downward toward
the floor, or at
any intermediate location.
Pure, in- , .,
vigorating air introduced
under slight pressure, can be supplied without
direct draft or directly onto occupants at will.
A simple turn of the hand wheel ( Fig. 1 ) reverses
the outfit so that it exhausts from the room
thus providing for absolute ventilation by complete
air change.
Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate
the simplicity
of installation. To
conserve the lighting
effect, and add to the
appearance, the filler
which accommodates
the ventilating set
can be glazed as
shown in Fig. 3.
The electrical connection
can be made
from nearby plug or
ordinary lamp
socket.
Any carpenter or millwright can install the outfit
at small cost.
This device, known as the "Ventura" Electric
Ventilating Set, is being marketed by the American
Blower Co., Detroit. Mich., from whom further
information can be obtained.
The stockholders of the Orient Coke Co. have
elected the following directors: Julian Kennedy,
Pittsburgh; Robert Bentley, T. F. Woodman and
David Daytfs, Youngstown, 0.; Reid Kennedy,
Homestead; Joseph W. Kennedy. Pittsburgh, and
0. W. Kennedy. Uniontown. At a later meeting
of the board, the following officers were re-elected:
Julian Kennedy, president: Robert Bentley, vice
president; Reid Kennedy, secretary and treasurer;
R. M. Fry. assistant secretary and treasurer,
and O. W. Kennedy, general superintendent.
