Fourteen slates made either Bessemer or lowphosphorus<br />

pig iron in 1910, against 12 states in<br />

1909 and the same number in 1908.<br />

In 1910 basic pig iron was made b.v 68 plants<br />

in lo states, as follows: Pennsylvania. 32 plants;<br />

Ohio, 15; New York, 5; Virginia, 4; Alabama, 4;<br />

New Jersey, 2; Indiana, 2; Illinois, 2; Missouri,<br />

1 ; and Colorado, 1.<br />

Commenting on the statistics by districts, so<br />

far as tabulated, Editor Swank says:<br />

"There was a decrease in the production of<br />

basic pig iron in 1910 as compared with 1909 in<br />

New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia,<br />

Missouri and Colorado. The falling off in Allegheny<br />

county, Pennsylvania, was especially heavy<br />

and amounted to over 380,000 tons."<br />

The figures on active and idle blast furnaces in<br />

the United States at the close of each year since<br />

1873, compiled by Mr. Swank, are:<br />
