One of tne largest steamship mergers in the history
of Great Lakes navigation was successfully
carried out at Cleveland June !), when five companies
joined a combination which will be known
as the Great Lakes Steamship Co. The concerns
involved in the transaction are the United States
Transportation Co., the L. C. Smith Transit Co.,
the Wilkinson Transportation Co.. the Standard
Transportation Co. and the American Transit Co.
The new concern will have a paid-in capital of $6,-
OOO.O'OO and a bond issue of $1,500,000, bearing interest
at 6 per cent, and payable serially in
amounts of $150,000 annually during the next in
years. Abeut 21 freight vessels are involvel in
the deal.
The Interstate Commerce Commission June 13
announced that it hail ordered the suspension, until
July 15, of the new rates on coke from the Connellsville
and West Virginia coke districts to Chicago
points over all the roads running from those
districts. The new rates were to have gone into
effect this date. The independent coke operators
and the western furnace men filed complaint with
the commerce commission against the new rates
and the commission suspended them until it could
investigate their reasonableness. Tbe new schedule
increased from $2.35 to $2.50 a ton the rate
on coke for certain purposes and reduced the rate
from $2.65 to $2.50 on coke for other purposes.
Frazee & Leonard, of Connellsville, Pa., have
purchased from J. N. Daugherty 200 acres of coal
in Rich Hill township. Greene county, Pa., for $25,-
000.
The dealers of Elizabeth, N. .1.. have formed a
credit association in which some 25 local firms are
represented. The purpose is to reduce losses from
bad debts.
COAL OUTPUT IN FRANCE IN 1910.
The output of coal and of lignite in France shows
for the year 1910 a gain of 746.129 tons, or 2 per
cent, for the former, as compared with 1909. and
a diminished output of lignite, amounting to 15.742
tons, or 2 per cent, less than the output of 1909.
