Alf Svensson Alf Svensson has been Chairman of the Christian Democrats since January 1973, which makes him the “longest” party chairman in Swedish political history. Born in 1938, Alf Svensson is married to Sonja and they have three grown-up children: Pamela, Alexander and Michaela. Mrs and Mr Svensson live in Gränna. Before becoming party chairman, Alf Svensson taught Swedish and History in high school. He has been a member of the Christian Democratic Party ever since it was founded in 1964. He helped to found the party’s youth organisation, KDU, in 1966, and was its chairman from 1970 until 1973. Alf Svensson has served as municipal councillor, first in Gränna and then in Jönköping, and he has also been a Jönköping county councillor. Alf Svensson first entered the Riksdag in 1985, through the party’s electoral cooperation with the Centre Party. In 1991, when the party entered the Riksdag under its own steam with 7.1 per cent of the votes, Alf Svensson became an MP but was then appointed Minister for Development Co-operation and Human Rights and Deputy Foreign Minister (1991-1994).
