Some of the environmental issues incorporated in the subjects taught in schools include<br />
Agro forestry, Soil conservation, environmental conservation, ecology among others.<br />
These help to create awareness on the part of students on the need for environmental<br />
conservation in general<br />
Non- formal <strong>Environment</strong>al Programs<br />
These are mainly carried out through community based environmental CBOs farmer field<br />
Schools, women groups and youth groups. Some of the key players include key<br />
government department (Agriculture/livestock/water/forest) donors especially IFAD and<br />
SIDA, NGOs notably the Green Belt Movement and the National Council of Women of<br />
Kenya.<br />

14.2 Public Awareness and Participation<br />
Public awareness and participation in the district is being coordinated by the NEMA<br />
office through the <strong>District</strong> <strong>Environment</strong> committee. Assistance in carrying out public<br />
awareness has been received from GOK departments NGOs and donors, notably IFAD<br />
(through the Mt. Kenya East Pilot Project for Natural Resources Management-MKEPP)<br />
