15.2 Status of environmental information management systems<br />
• Adequacy of institutional skills in information management system<br />
A number of institutions have acquired computers which are crucial in any information<br />
management system. However most of the technical staff in the departments are not<br />
trained in basic computer skills<br />
• Number of documentation centers, archives and libraries<br />
The district has one <strong>District</strong> Information and Documentation Centre (DIDC) under the<br />
district development officer (DDO). However it is not yet operational since it still lacks<br />
furniture.<br />
15.3 Constraints/challenges in environmental information/data<br />
collection<br />
• Poor ICT infrastructure<br />
• Low institutional skills in information management<br />
• Lack of funding and human resources to collect data.<br />
15.4 Indigenous knowledge<br />
o Use of loglines, trash lines and stone lines to control soil erosion.<br />
o Establishment of sacred places (Iri) as a way of protecting water<br />
catchment areas and conserving biodiversity.<br />
o Shifting cultivation<br />
o Use of certain materials to treat various livestock ailment<br />
o Use of aloe Vera to treat chicken diseases (Newcastle)<br />
o Use of various abstract to control worm e.g machui/ igati.<br />
o Use of some plant roots/seeds to hasten productive functions e.g.<br />
expulsion of after birth<br />
o Use of various trees, herbs and shrubs to treat various diseases and to<br />
boost immunity to diseases.<br />
o Sudden emergence of certain insect species which is an indication of onset<br />
of catastrophes.
