Age: 32<br />

Greg joined <strong>the</strong> Kent Volunteer Fire<br />

Department in 2003 and was<br />

also a member of <strong>the</strong> Arkema Fire<br />

Brigade, where he was employed<br />

in Carrolton, Kentucky. Greg<br />

was very passionate about <strong>the</strong><br />

fire service and had eagerly<br />

traveled to Texas A&M fire<br />

school in <strong>the</strong> fall of 2005.<br />

Greg was full of life and<br />

enjoyed it to its fullest.<br />

He will always be remembered<br />

for his beautiful<br />

smile that will forever<br />

be missed by all of those<br />

who knew and loved him.<br />

Greg was an avid hunter<br />

and fisherman and spent<br />

as much of his free time<br />

as he could enjoying those<br />

pastimes.<br />

He was a devoted husband,<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r, son, uncle and friend. Greg<br />

was always eager to help anyone in need<br />

and never expected anything in return. He<br />

was a very humble man who was always laughing<br />

and joking around. He never knew a stranger and<br />

was liked by all who met him.<br />

On November 1, 2006, <strong>the</strong> Kent Fire Department<br />

and several o<strong>the</strong>r local fire departments responded<br />

to assist <strong>the</strong> Hanover Volunteer Fire<br />

Department in battling a house fire at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Little Kings Horse Farm just outside<br />

of Kent, Indiana. <strong>The</strong> house<br />

was estimated to be approximately<br />

13,000 square feet.<br />

Greg and o<strong>the</strong>r firefighters<br />

were inside <strong>the</strong> home when<br />

a decision was made to<br />

retreat due to <strong>the</strong> intense<br />

heat and smoke. As <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were doing so, a flashover<br />

occurred. When<br />

<strong>the</strong> firefighters made it<br />

outside, <strong>the</strong>y realized<br />

that Greg was not among<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. A rescue team was<br />

organized and quickly reentered<br />

<strong>the</strong> home. Greg<br />

was located on <strong>the</strong> second<br />

floor and removed. Ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

firefighter was injured during<br />

<strong>the</strong> rescue and required surgery<br />

on his leg. Sadly, Greg had been<br />

in <strong>the</strong> heat and smoke too long and<br />

was unable to be revived.<br />

Greg was very proud to be a member of <strong>the</strong> Kent<br />

Volunteer Fire Department and of <strong>the</strong> difference<br />

that he made by becoming a fireman. <strong>The</strong>re will<br />

forever be an empty place in <strong>the</strong> hearts of all of his<br />

family and friends. He was a true hero in life and<br />

in death.
