Michael Day suffered a fatal heart attack<br />

in his office on June 13, 2006,<br />

after responding to a fire earlier in<br />

<strong>the</strong> day. A 27-year veteran with<br />

<strong>the</strong> department, he was officially<br />

recognized for outstanding<br />

professionalism and courage<br />

on three separate occasions.<br />

In 1989, he was awarded<br />

<strong>the</strong> Heroic Action commendation<br />

for rescuing<br />

four people from <strong>the</strong> roof<br />

of a burning house.<br />

Promoted to <strong>the</strong> rank of<br />

Deputy Assistant Chief<br />

in June 2005, Michael<br />

Day completed his final class in <strong>the</strong> Executive<br />

Fire Officer program at <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> Fire<br />

Academy shortly before his death.<br />

He had previously served as <strong>the</strong><br />

Health and Safety Officer for<br />

<strong>the</strong> International Association<br />

of Firefighters Local 799.<br />

He was survived by his<br />

wife, Cynthia Day; and<br />

his children, Michael J.<br />

Day, II, Amanda Day,<br />

Brianne Day, and<br />

Stephanie Day. His<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r and three bro<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

were also firefighters.
