ACHIEVEMENTS √ Council approves the Gannawarra 2025 Community Strategic Plan for implementation by Council and other agencies in future budgets, as appropriate. √ In response to the flood events Council adopts the Gannawarra Shire Flood Recovery Plan 2011 √ Council adopts the Youth Strategy, Community Planning Review and Municipal Early Years Plan. CHILDREN’S SERVICES √ Council continues to provide a high quality Family Day Care Service across the Shire, with 18 carers operating in six different townships. The service also remained operational throughout the 2011 floods. √ Council agreed to continue to operate the Gannawarra Shire Children’s Centre (Long Day Care) on an ongoing basis. The Long Day Care centre in Kerang officially closed in December 2009 due to a lack of enrolments and financial pressures. After unsuccessfully trying to find another operator, the Gannawarra Shire Council agreed to apply for a License to operate the centre (renamed to Gannawarra Shire Children’s Centre) in March 2010, for an initial trial period of 3 months and then later extended to the end of December 2010. The Shire is now a fully licensed Early Childhood Provider in line with other child care services. √ In 2010/2011 there were 474 children from 324 families registered using the Gannawarra Shire Council’s Long Day Care and Family Day Care services. √ The Kerang Children’s Centre celebrated a successful year of Council management in April 2011 with utilisation rates at the centre averaging 90 percent capacity. √ The Kerang Children’s Centre supported a number of external visits for the year including visits from two Malaysian Early Intervention Workers and the residents from Glenarm Nursing Home. √ The Children’s Centre provided support for Early Childhood students on work placements from Charles Sturt University, BRiT, Ballarat University, Sunraysia TAFE, MADEC and Victorian Training Group. The centre also welcomed work experience students from Boort Secondary College and Kerang Technical High School. √ Training was offered to all Early Childhood Educators in CPR, First Aid, Anaphylaxis, Early Years Learning Framework, Outdoor Play Space, Child Care Management Systems, National Quality Framework and Child Protection. COMMUNITY CARE √ Packaged Care Audit successfully completed. √ Senior’s week activities were well supported within the Shire. The Jamie Redfern concert, held in Cohuna, was a great success with over 240 people attending. √ A trial was commenced which saw Gannawarra Shire Home and Community Care Assessment staff completing Assessments for the Occupational Therapist at Northern District Community Health (NDCH). This trial has strengthened the partnership between Council and NDCH and has ensured the provision of a quality service to residents.
