smart form notices new trends
Pittsburgh-based Smart Form Specialty
Undergarment store has been retailing postmastectomy
products while catering to the needs
of patients for more than 50 years. And in
changing women’s lives through counseling and
listening to requests for certain mastectomy
products, the small specialty store has noticed a
few trends and some are a bit surprising.
According to the company, many women who
are at high risk for developing breast cancer are
seeking mastectomies before the emergence of
cancer or pre-cancerous cells. For those women,
it’s easier for them to deal with a mastectomy
when they are healthy rather than undergoing
the operation after having developed the disease.
“These women are really strong,” said Sandi
Staymates, office manger and certified mastectomy
trainer for Smart Form. “These women —
which are getting younger and younger— come
in to learn about mastectomies and mastectomy
garments because they choose to.”
While only eight women out of the hundreds
of Smart Forms customers have chosen the procedure,
Staymates believes it may become more
common.
The company also reports seamless and
padded bras have been selling well, and to
accommodate the growing demand, Smart
Forms offers Glamorize and ABC bras, as well
as customized non-surgical breast prostheses,
nipples and areolas for reconstructed surgeries.
Additionally, Smart Forms calls hospitals for
patient healthcare eligibility and obtains prescriptions.
“We are a one shop stop,” said Staymates. “We
do everything, almost to a fault.”
Moderated by the company’s Co-CEOs,
