Meetings
Among the many memorable events of
2008 was the Foreign Policy Association’s
90 th Anniversary Year Dinner, featuring
a keynote speech by the president of the United
Nations Security Council, Sir John Sawers. FPA
presented Corporate Social Responsibility
Awards to three distinguished business leaders:
John J. Conroy, chairman of Baker & McKenzie;
John Hofmeister, former president of Shell Oil
Company; and Robert W. Lane, chairman and
chief executive officer of Deere & Company.
At our World Leadership Forum 2008,
FPA was honored to host four heads of state:
President Felipe Calderon of Mexico, President
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain, President
Lech Kaczynski of Poland, and President
Abdullah Gul of Turkey. The Forum provided
an opportunity for participants to sit in on a
conversation between David A. Paterson, the
governor of New York, and Jean Charest, the
Premier of Quebec.
FPA launched in 2008 its International
Business Forum series, designed to bring
together a broad cross-section of financial
experts. The launch featured a reception
with Dean Frank Brown of Insead, the leading
international business school, presentations
by numerous acclaimed authors, and dinners
honoring Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, chairman of
Nestlé S.A., and Fred H. Langhammer, chairman
of global affairs at The Esteé Lauder Companies.
Marking our fifth year of partnership with
the National Endowment for Democracy, FPA
and NED continued to present highly engaging
programs that explored the growth of democracy
worldwide. FPA also organized town hall
meetings that focused on U.S. relations with
China and on potential endgames in Iraq. The
meetings, attended by audiences of more than
300, were made available nationwide through
video-casting.
FPA’s 2008 Annual Dinner honored New
York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. FPA’s
Corporate Social Responsibility Award was
presented to David Cote, chairman and CEO of
Honeywell International; Marilyn Carlson Nelson,
chairman and CEO of Carlson Companies;
and Paul Otellini, president and CEO of Intel
Corporation.
Per Larsson, chief executive officer of Borse
Dubai, received FPA’s Global Financial Leader
Award at our 2008 Financial Services Dinner.
FPA honored Frances Aldrich Sevilla-Sacasa,
president of U. S. Trust Bank of America Private
Wealth Management, with its Corporate Social
Responsibility Award.
