Head south Friday evening for a topnotch football game
There wUl be a championship-game atmosphe
Friday night when Hammonton vlsite Cape Ma
Court House to meet Middle Township.
It won't be a championship game in the true
sense. The winner wiU not be the champion based
purely on the outcome of this garnet But it is the
most important game remaining in the National
Conference of the Cape-^tlantlc League.
Both Middle and Hammonton are &\ m the conference.
Ironically, they both lost only to Mainland.
The Mustangs are no longer in the picture
because they lost to Buena and St. Joseph.
If Middle wins Friday night's game die Panthers -
—. who visit Ocean City on Thanksgiving morning
in a non-league game — will need only to defeat
Bridgeton on Nov. 15 to win their first football
championship since 1969.
What, 1969?
They weren't even doing games on cable television
in 1969. In fact, veteran Bud Rinck was still a
college baseball star the last time Middle was a
league football champion.
We're talking about a long time here!
Hammonton, on the other hand, was co-chanv
Williams sports columnist
pion just last season with rival St: Joseph. And, If
Hammonton wins Friday night's game, they will
have to beat St. Joe again to clinch another title.
At the beginning of the season Hammonton was
expected to be the team to beat in this race. The
Blue Devils have beaten six teams in 1991 by a
total score of 198-8, losing only a 12-8 decision to
Mainland when Mustang quarterback Shawn
Ward turned a blocked field goal into a touchdown
with four seconds left.
Buena and Mainland were also expected to be
solid challengers. The Chiefs were returning most
of last year's team and were very quick. Mainland
was big and powerful.
But nobody thought Middle Township would be
In the picture, Most people would have looked at
school bands.
When the Panthers opened the season by beating
St. Joseph, 28-21, some people noticed. But most
assumed that it Just must be an off year for the
Wildcats.
A 28-0 win over St. Augustine and a 42-6 romp
over Lower Cape May were expected. Then the
Panthers saw a 9-7 halftime lead disappear at
Mainland when the Mustangs scored all 12 points
m the second half to win, 19-9.
So much for Middle Township, many people
thought They face their first serious contender
and they lose,
But last Friday night the Panthers proved they
were not dead. They defeated Buena, 19-14, on a
fourth-period touchdown by Clarence "Jurae"
Shelton.
Shelton is a talented junior who transferred from
Wildwood." He has helped make the Panthers a
more dangerous team offensively.
