Volunteers help
the needy hove a
happy Thanksgiving
By CHARLIE WOOD
A dressing of bright lights and
decorations on City HaU and
along Asbury Avenue lend a
cheerful holiday ambience to the
city. But for too many individuals
and families the lights aren't
bright enough to cut through the
cold and hunger they wiU feel this
holiday season,
Philjohnson, who volunteers his
time on a year-round basis to
keep the Community Cupboard
stocked with foods for distribution
to those in need, says the cupboard
doubles its efforts this tune
of year,
Johnson says the number of
needy families has more than
doubled since last year. He figures
it is because of the economy, unemployment
and an increased effort to
locate needy
people.
Donations come into the cupboard
on a regular basis from schools,
churches and civic groups.
tt fetich as the
Association, and dty workers union
*CWA Local 1078 make regular financial
contributions used for buying
more food.
But wherever the food or other
donations come from, or whatever
the season, it all starts with individuals
who might donate a can or two of
food, or give their time and energy to
help out at fund raisers, such as last
weekends Fun' ttival which raised
over $l-,400 for me Community Cup-
Aboard.
City firefighters have been working
with the Community Cupboard putting
together baskets of food for
delivery to families in time for
Thanksgiving. Included with each
basket is a gift certificate which can
be used at a local supermarket to purchase
a turkey or other food.
As the firemen set out to make
deliveries of food baskets earlier this
eek, the cold biting winds of late
November seemed to cut to the bone.
"We make the deliveries because we
have the trucks, and guys who are off
duty make the deliveries," says fire
captain Lou Davis.
A lot of people are just too proud
to ask for help, says Mike Geller
who coordinates the deliveries for the
firemen. "Sometimes a friend or
neighbor gives us their name."
Firefighters Mike Lowe and Scott
Goucher who were making deliveries
for the first time agree.
"People an {lad to get it, but if s
tough on theU'prlde, says Lowe.
Geller says he set a box of food on a
lady's kitchen tpble. She never said a
word. As he wilked out the door he
turned ti* vtsliher a nippy Thank*,
giving. Mid the tears wen streaming
— down her face. Geller says that kind
"of thing really brings it all home.
"It makes you feelUke you've really
helped somebody. It gets you In the
holiday spirit, and that makes it all
worthwhile," says Capt Lewis
Somehow the winter winds don't
saom so cold now, and the lights
along the avenue seem to shine a little
brighter.
Water Co, officials
Wad to assure tiie Jownship Committee
Monday that jhe utility's proposed
diversionfef water from
Marmora to Ocean City would not
harm residential wells, but members
of the governing body maintain their
opposition to the plan.
The committee approved hiring R.E.
Wright''Assodatts* Inc. of Middletown,
Pa., to study the impart of the
proposed water diversion. The firm
will also represent the township at
the state Department of fnvironmental
"We felt we wmted proftssional
advice on this because its so important,"
said CoHunltteeman Andrew J.
McCrosson Jr. He added that the firm
has worked in Atlantic County and is
familiar with New Jersey-American.
The water utility is seeking state
approval for a four-year aUotttion
permit, which would aUow fee company
to draw water from two weUs
on Stagecoaeh Road to supply Ocean
City and other sections of the township.
New Jersey-American would
also allow township residents along
the route of the proposed line to hook
In should they want to.
At this point, it is urdU^iy mat the
company will get its full request to
draw 2.06 million gallons per day
from the two wells, according to Tim
O'Brien, a New Jersey-American
for half that amount allow-
