NORTHFIELD—Anchor Disposal Service %viU pay
$15,000 to Atlantic County In lieu of penalty under a consent
order accepted by the county Division of Public
Health and the Atlantic County Utilities Authority.
The two agencies had filed a complaint against Anchor,
accusing the firm of operating an illegal transfer station at
its fadlity at Ridge and Jefferson avenues in Cardiff. .
A Under the consent order signed by Superior Court Judge
^L Anthony Gibeon, the fadliry will be subject to unannounced
inspections, and Anchor is prohibited from operating
any solid waste handling fadlity without obtaining
necessary permits from the stare.
The complaint alleged that on several occasions between
December 1990 and April 1991, Anchor used its Cardiff
fadiiry to illegally transfer waste from collection trucks to
larger vehicles and then illegally transported the waste to
Philadelphia for disposal All solid waste originating in
tipping fees at the MUA's landfill are expected to rise
_ The total solid waste budget fell from $12,273,787 in 1991
Was $11,770,789 in 1992, Tipping fees at the county landfill
on the border of Woodbine and Upper Township, however,
are projected to increase S6J5 per ton, from $8350 to
$89.75 per ton, because fewer materials are being land-
current recession and an increase to recycling. The
in wake of second storm
Heavy winds and high tides caused some beach erosion
and road flooding Sunday, although the damage was not
as extensive as the offshore storm on Halloween.
£ Emergency officials had been concerned that erosion of
communities more vulnerable to another stem. The
storm Sunday produced high tides well short of the 9 feet
brought in morning tides in Ventnor about 25 feet above
