Judges select<br />
the finalists<br />
No cooking contest is complete without<br />
competent judges with extensive<br />
experience in the culinary arts. This<br />
year's judges were all culinary professionals:<br />
Chef Johan Vroegop of Harry's<br />
Inn <strong>and</strong> Restaurant, Somers Point;<br />
Chefs Dave Masterson <strong>and</strong> Vincent<br />
Downey, instructors at Cape May<br />
County Vocational Schools; <strong>and</strong> Gwen<br />
Raring, executive chef at The Grainary<br />
gourmet caterers in Ocean Gty.<br />
The judges had previously selected<br />
10 finalists <strong>and</strong> four alternates in each<br />
division by reading over the recipes<br />
our readers submitted.<br />
At the contest, they determined the<br />
winners based on their professional<br />
evaluation of the prepared entries.<br />
The judging is not an easy task, <strong>and</strong><br />
we extend a huge "Thank You" to<br />
these four individuals for giving of<br />
their time <strong>and</strong> expertise.<br />
A special thanks is extended to Dave<br />
Masterson for lending the table linens<br />
<strong>and</strong> skirts, which added the finishing<br />
touch to our tables.<br />

Gwen. .Raring<br />
In Breads <strong>and</strong> Desserts, Gwen Raring<br />
of The Grainary in Ocean Gty judged<br />
the entries.<br />
Raring, who holds a bachelor's<br />
degree from the University of Delaware,<br />
recei¥ed an associates degree<br />
from the Academy of Culinaiy Arts,<br />
Mays L<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />
An executive chef at The Grainary<br />
since 1988, she specialto in pastries,<br />
cookies <strong>and</strong> desserts, especially wedding<br />
cakes.<br />
_ She was a pastry chef at La Patisserie<br />
in Boulder, Colo., during her two-year<br />
travels throughout the country she<br />
embarked to experience regional cooking.<br />
Raring*s other experience includes<br />
Newcamb, a .chef at Patina's .in linwood<br />
hope to open, a restaurant of.<br />
their own one day.<br />
Johan Vroegop<br />

category was Jokan Vroegop., currently<br />
chef at Harry's frm, <strong>and</strong> Restaurant,<br />
Somers Point.<br />
Vroegop, who was bom in The Netherl<strong>and</strong>s<br />
came to the United States with<br />
extensive schooling in hotel administration<br />
<strong>and</strong> considerable experience<br />
