Give dunes
top priority
Mayor Nickolas Trofa acted correctly in rescinding
the dry's ridiculous policy of allowing the use
of, municipal men and machinery to destroy sand
dunes. Unfortunately, his actions didn't go far
enough: The city policy of allowing dunes to be
destroyed, by anyone (municipal or private prop
erty owner), should be nipped in the bud.
As we said at flie time during the previous city
administration when the policy was being contemplated,
you cannot compromise Mother
Nature. By placating those private property owners
who don't Uke their view of the ocean spoiled
by sand dunes, the majority of property owners
and the safety of everyone is jeopardized.
One of the good things about the recent Halloween
tidal storm is that it proved the value of sand
dunes (and of dune grass to stabilize the dunes).
Up and down the Jersey coast, dunes and wide
beaches either kept back the sea or alleviated the
flooding. For instance, the recently pumped in
multimillion-dollar beach in Cape May saved that
town from the worst flooding in 30 years. Had
Ocean City had its new beach in place, our boardwalk
would soil be whole and beachfront flooding
would not have occurred.
Sand, whether in the form of a wide beach
and/or a dune, dissipates the energy of waves
and lessens the effects of tidal flooding. Maintenance
and nurturing of a comprehensive dune
system should be a top priority demanded and
fought for by local government.
Furthermore, Ocean City needs a comprehensive
beachfront maintenance policy geared toward the
protection of Me and property, not the convenience
or desires of a handful of property owners.
There should be no permanent structures on the
beachfront. Massive walk-overs are unnecessary
when temporary, old-fashioned boardwalks,
which could be quickly picked up, are available.
Street-end openings to the beach should become
part of the dune system and access to the beach
should be narrow and diagonal.
None of this requires any engineering or scientific
research. It is all common sense and has been
practiced for years up and down the Atlantic coast
by communities which ^aye.tH^^ljrtorittes
What is not stipulated, according to McCarthy, is a guarantee
the life expectancy of the system after December 31,
Allstate\s withdrawal Anti-abortionists:
can prove a savings Do what you say
Editor, Sentinel-Ledgir;
When Allstate Insurance
Compiny publicly
announced their planned
'withdrawal from writing
automobile insurancein
New Jersey, I found it pru-
dent to assist them.
Fortunately, my
for two autos and homeowners
policies far both
homes all expired in October.
I had no difficulty in find-
Ing a company that eagerly
wanted my entire package
and, incidentally, I obtained
better coverage at an'appredable
savings in premiums
(Right here in Ocean City,
too).
Iven if Allstate is playing
games and may not withdraw
in five yean, I don't
care to be a pawn in their
negotiations.
If every current Allstate
policyholder would take
the same initiative, Allstate
would be out of the auto
and property damage
insurance coverage in New
Jersey in less than two
years,
The first section of the multi-million dollar plan which
includes the coastal section from Great Igg Harbor Inlet
hearing to be held in this area on December 9.
The coastal study was made by the Army Engineers following
the Atlantic storm of March, 1962, but it had been
asked for earlier by Governor Richard Hughes who, to his
1961 election campaign, promised to seek a solution to
in the Oct. 17 issue by
abortion. i .!_;'„!,•,
I have often wondered if
all the anti-abortion people
would consider approaching
a woman who plans on
having an abortion or going
to a dime and saying:
"Have the baby. We wUl
pay aU the bills. We wUl
take the child and raise and
Now, that would be truly
noble. A life would be
saved. They could go to
places as dose as Atlantic
Instead of demonstrating,
letter writing and finger
be taken, Or do the antiabortion
