Reflections on the loss of two young people by their coaches
Ron Moretti and Cheryl pavis are remembered as team players who cared about others
When you talk to Ocean City High School coaches atout
Ron Moretti and Oieyl Davis, you hear pretty much the
same things.
They woe special people — not nMessarily the most talen
ted—who •coepted their rota and were more man wining
to give whatever they could for the benefit of the
team.
Moretti, who played football and baseball, shared the
quarterback position in football with Brian Tdtey during
the pre-season and ended up playing defense during most
of the regular season. He was a catcher during the spring.
"He was probably our No. 1 catcher," said GC baseball
coach Craig Mensinger, "and 1 really feel he had the
chance to •vrotually be aU-league, He was a leader—but
he was quiet He was a super, unbelievable kid,"
Davis played guard in basketball, mostly on the jayvee
team.
"She was excited about moving up to the varsity this
yew," said Coach Chris Lentz, "She just loved being part
of the team. She played all summer and was the type of
kid you could ask to do anything"
Football coach Gary Degenhardt says more of the same,
"Ron was the typo of kid who really believed in himself,"
Degenhardt explained. "I think he knew that Brian
was a little better than him but he accepted his role and
did whatever he could to help. He always made sure he
was prepared and ready to step in,"
Moretti, a junior, hoped one day to attend the Air Force
Academy. Davis, a senior who ranked No. 26 in her class,
was just beginning to examine colleges.
"She was such a great kid," said Lentz. "She was the
All-American type, the type of person you don't run
across all the time. Whether she played much or not, she
The biggest effect atOeean City High School is being felt
right now by the football team. The tragic accident happened
less than 12 hours after Moretti played against
daily since late August.
The coaches keep telling the kids that we have to go
on," said Degenhardt, "but its tough enough for us. Imagine
how it feels for a 16- or 17-year-old to suffer a loss like
this. One of our newer players went through the death of
a teammate last year before moving here."
As Degenhardt said, things have to go on — though not
necessarily with the game spirit and enthusiasm. It's one
As proffiised, this week and for the next several columns,
I will be sharing some interesting hands and experiences
bam the week long redone! tournament held
yearly in Lancaster, Pa. this is one of the nicest tourna-
ments around, mainly because of die beauty of the area
generally, and also there are so many nice pices to eat at
reasonable prices. I would strongly recommoid you put it
on your calender next year, as there are games for eveiyone,
even the most novice players* plenty of shopping
areas for the ladles too!
Every year this writer normally goes to this tournament
and plays for three or four days, but Uus year I played
only two days, as a couple of my regular partners, Laurel
Mowbray and Aaron Simon, chickened outl
However, my most regular partner, Jerry Home, and I,
played in two very exciting events (four sessions), and I
will be reporting.mostly on our successes, but also on a
couple of our failures as well.
We placed fourth over all in both events, and this week's
hand comes from the first session (our worst) on Tuesday
OctoberZWi,
As you look at this hand, you will see the bidding seems
a little stranger-but we play a forcing dub system, so the
first two bids are artificial, and his (3) diamond bid is the
first indication of what type of hand he has. His bid shows
a powerful diamond suit and a powerful hand, and was
meant to force me to bid at least once more. I was not
happy aboutthis, as it looked like my hand would be usel
unless he had spades fj thought it unlikely), so I
At first it looks easy if you can set up diamonds and pull
Pretty Face.
When most banks say you're a valued customer, chances are they're talking
about the value of your checkbook. That's not the case at The Coastal Bank.
Here we treat everyone the sarne^ regardless of their balance. Which means,
you'll get the same personal attention and courteous service whether you're
a Rockefeller or, well, a Trump.
