KIDS, TWEENS & TEENS 30 Preparing ffor CCollege SSuccess Have you been thinking about coming back to school? Are your math skills a little rusty? Does the idea of taking a test make you nervous? Do you have a low SAT score? Did you fail the Accuplacer test? If you answered yes to any of these questions, relax — help is here at GCC. Going back to school as an adult student is not always easy. Gloucester County College is pleased to offer refresher courses to ease the transition into college and prepare for the college placement test. These refresher courses are recommended for those who wish to improve their chances of being placed into college level courses. Overcoming Test Anxiety Learn strategies and tips to help you overcome test anxiety. Students will have an opportunity for hands-on practice with the college placement test. Cost: $30 ($10 registration fee, $20 tuition) COL-102-01 Saturday January 24, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Location: Gloucester County College Pre-Algebra Review This course will review the basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as applied to fractions, decimals, ratios and percentages. Special emphasis will be placed on solving word problems. Cost: $75 ($10 registration fee, $65 tuition) COL-103-01 Saturday, 4 classes January 31 – February 21, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Location: Gloucester County College Algebra Review This course will review the fundamentals of algebra. Topics will include exponents, polynomials, factoring, first degree equations, quadratic equations and rational numbers. Cost: $99 ($10 registration fee, $89 tuition) COL-104-01 Saturday, 6 classes February 28 – April 4, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Location: Gloucester County College Reading and Writing Enhance your reading and writing abilities to prepare for the college placement test. Beginning with a review of fundamental reading skills, this class will help you develop successful strategies for understanding and interpreting the college level test. Cost: $99 ($10 registration fee, $89 tuition) COL-105-01 Wednesday, 6 classes January 21 – February 25, 6:00 – 8:00 pm Location: Gloucester County College SAT Preparation This course is designed to expose the student to the specific test material required for the new SAT. We will work on actual simulated SAT questions and explain the answers. A practice test will be provided for students to do on their own. We will cover such topics as: the actual breakdown for the test, how best to prepare for the test and how the guessing factor can be used to significantly increase your scores. Proper test preparation greatly helps to minimize the dangerous tensions that can seriously lower scores for many students. Half of the sessions are spent in Critical Reasoning (Verbal), half in Math. Students should bring a calculator for the Math sessions. Cost: $125 ($10 registration fee, $82 tuition, $33 materials) COL-100-01 Monday, 6 classes December 1 – January 12 (no class Dec. 29) 6:30 – 9:00 pm This course will be completed prior to the next SAT on January 24, 2009. AAddult EEdducation PProgram Gloucester County College offers free Adult Education programs to assist adults with preparing for the GED test and improving their basic reading, writing, and math skills. These Adult Education programs are funded by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development Adult Basic Education (ABE) for adults who do not possess a high school diploma and require training in basic (below high school level) reading, writing, and math. General Education Development (GED) for adults who wish to study high school level writing, math, social studies, science, and literature and the arts in order to pass the GED test and receive a high school diploma issued by the State of New Jersey. Academic Enhancement (AE) for adults who possess a high school diploma but wish to improve math, language, or reading skills in order to fulfill a personal educational goal. English as a Second Language (ESL) for adults who want to learn and adapt themselves to the American language and culture. Special emphasis is placed on improving communication skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The programs are offered during the day and evening at Gloucester County College. Day programs run yearround and evening programs run from September until April. Classes are free, however, there is a $10 nonrefundable registration fee. A placement test is required for all adult education classes. GCC staff will evaluate your ability and help you register for the class that is right for you. Appointments are required for testing.
