THE TYCHE OF ANTIOCH AND THE INFLUENCE OF IMPERIAL ROME 64<br />

<strong>The</strong> Tyche <strong>of</strong> Antioch statue, commissioned around 300 BCE, was one <strong>of</strong><br />

the most famous Tyche statues <strong>in</strong> the Greco-Roman world, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

proliferation <strong>of</strong> its image <strong>in</strong> numerous media. <strong>The</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> other Tyche statues<br />

<strong>in</strong> Antioch, by Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Trajan, and Alexander Severus, based on<br />

or related to the orig<strong>in</strong>al Tyche statue, reflects the cont<strong>in</strong>uation <strong>of</strong> the prom<strong>in</strong>ence<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Tyche statue dur<strong>in</strong>g the imperial period. <strong>The</strong> contemporaneous<br />

proliferation <strong>of</strong> city Tychai on co<strong>in</strong>age <strong>of</strong> the Greek East, many <strong>of</strong> which emulate<br />

the Tyche <strong>of</strong> Antioch statue, underl<strong>in</strong>es the renewed importance <strong>of</strong> the city Tyche<br />

statuary dur<strong>in</strong>g the imperial period.<br />

<strong>The</strong> statue: description<br />

<strong>The</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> the Tyche <strong>of</strong> Antioch statue has been the subject <strong>of</strong> several,<br />

meticulous studies. 65 I would like to review the primary evidence concern<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

statue and add, briefly, my own observations.<br />
