weather. In the daytime it is pretty warm but in the evening the ocean breeze is
pretty fresh. I was talking with some of the fellows that live around here Sunday.
They say that this is the first company that stayed here over three or four days and I
don't believe that this place was selected for us if that wreck wouldnâ€t't have
happened. They say that they always closed this camp around the fifteenth, so if
that is the case we will stay here about two weeks yet, but nobody knows.
Well, we had payday today but those two days are spent going to camp. They beat
us out of that but we should worry. They certainly have all kinds of entertainments
in the Y.M.C.A. here. First, they had a couple of clowns here tonight and now they
are having a four-piece orchestra showing off from New York. Guess I will go out
on a pass tomorrow - spend some of my month's wages because they always say
what's the use of money if doesn't circulate. But believe me, it circulates here.
Well, you can't blame they boys - this life is only a short one so it might just as well
be a gay one. An Aug. is going to have it while he is out, and if he comes back he
will make up for it again , and if not he don't need it.
we had bayonet drill today. That is pretty hard on the muscles if you have a
nine-pound gun and a bayonet on the end of it hanging in your arms for about an
hour steady. Well, you said Pa thought I got skinny already since I came here.
Don't know whether I did or not but I know I am about four inches narrower around
the belt as I was when I came to Camp Grant. "Spose it naturally would take some
meat from a draft horse if you'd take him off from the wagon and put him on the
racetrack. I know it always did off Pa's Queen and I believe that she is tougher nor
I am. (I) was going to weigh down at the canteen tonight but the scale was out of
order so I couldn't. But after all we have no kicking because some of the
companies drill their men harder nor they do us. But Compnay "F" had to check
down to because most of their men were pretty near all in.
So you see we have no kicking. The Capt. came through this morning and gave our
sergeant orders to give us more rest. He said "give them more rest and when you
drill them, make them put more snap into it." Guess that is right to, always thought
I was slow buth they have some here that are a whole lot slower. Of course, they
have some that are a whole lot better but I am getting along fine since I got out of
the Depot Brigade, but that was a hellhole, right. I was tickled that the only left me
there a week. Well, has Chessy made up his mind yet whether he wants to work for
Uncle Sam yet or not? 'Spose it will be kind of hard for him to part with the old
Maxwell he's the boy for he's built for a pacer. Guess he won't talk so wise after he
has been here a couple of months. How is Oscar D. coming along? Does he
always run into the ditch yet at dad's gate, or has he changed his route by this time?
If you don't know, ask Cilla. "Spose she can tell you hare are the shindigs coming
around there. Do they still keep them going or not? How are the Socialists
coming? Do they still have their parties yet or not? 'Spose they do.
